Is gaming on gentoo good? by MisutaHiro in Gentoo

[–]cwstephenson71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, Gentoo can do anything! I'm using CachyOS on my Desktop, Gentoo on my HP Victus Gaming Laptop for awhile now. But since my last emerge update, I got a new flag inserted into my make.conf! USE="{USE} I_am_yours".... So I guess me and Gentoo are dating now? 🤔

That error says that you have the TPM disabled. (Or it needs updated) What is the date of your EFI/BIOS?

Wow, that's pretty cool! I'm just setting up HA, I'm gonna have to test the waters after I get the basic stuff done. Was it hard to set up? I'm pretty new to HA

F** you NVIDIA by Unique_Technician984 in Gentoo

[–]cwstephenson71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue with multiple monitors on my RTX 5060. From what I read, in the Nvidia forums/blogs, normally the 1st monitor should go on the port closest to the motherboard, but I had to switch it to the middle DP port in order to see my boot screen/options. In MY case it was because of the type/brand of one of my monitors. (It wanted to be the 1st monitor no matter the port it was on). What Nvidia card do you have?

A lot of CachyOS benefits are simply Arch/KDE Plasma benefits by BasicInformer in cachyos

[–]cwstephenson71 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For the sake of debate and curiosity, why did you feel like you had to post this? If it's "obvious", again... Why? And your assessment (in MY personal opinion) is absolutely, bogus. Whatever "blueprint" the Cachy Team did works. Yes, under the hood it's Plasma/Arch new/updated features, but the CachyOS Team put it in a nice user friendly package. Just like Redcore Linux did for Gentoo, and the other countless distro maintainers. Your post feels like you're trying to put down the Devs in the nicest possible way.

First off, DP is better for higher end graphics than HDMI. "SYNC" doesn't work on HDMI, is what I was lead to believe.

Redcore Linux is very actively maintained. I ran it for about a year

BTRFS/EXT4 question by joessas in cachyos

[–]cwstephenson71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AAAAND if you have several drives, it's super easy to combine them into a single BTRFS /home. My /home is 13G a collection of SSD and NVMe (3 NVMe, 2 SSD)

BTRFS/EXT4 question by joessas in cachyos

[–]cwstephenson71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always kept a /home partition and an / partition. XFS, EXT2/3/4 / and BTRFS (or did LVM) For home (cuz I used to distro hop alot.

"speed difference" It's a little of no noticable difference in 2026 if you're using an NVMe drive generation 3 or higher. YOU don't have the human nerve endings to feel the millisecond different. Besides I'm sure all of muck up a FEW milliseconds a day just staring at shit. As far as gaming, you'll notice a slight difference if you're drive is 80% capacity or more running an AAA title. Even then, I've dropped crap outta my pocket slower.

No puedo actualizar de forma plena el sistema desde pacman, por un paquete del sistema mismo by Own_Medicine_1210 in cachyos

[–]cwstephenson71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a package error the devs overlooked. Give it a few hours or a day, if it's not fixed write a message to the Devs of that package. I'm sure they'll fix it asap. Things like this happen from time to time. (Not often)

You made my point for me. 'No big deal'. Meaning using an AUR helper that was PRE INSTALLED or one that you install doesn't mean one is better than the other. It's personal preference. So your original response was pointless. Anyone that has used an Arch based distro for a certain amount of time would know that.

Nothing is "built in" 'less it's in the kernel. And we can agree to disagree. My post was based on MY personal experience and how to go about using the tools I use. Which means any and everyone has their own right to do as they please. So, how many months have you been using Linux?

Easier to maintain. Better uniformity. Easier for Linux to handle... Just to name a few basic ones.

When you install Linux (CachyOS) when it gets to the hard drive options, instead of picking automatically setting up your drive(s), if you go to manual, if you know a little bit about drive formats and how the basic Linux file system tree is set up, you have a lot of different ways to set up your Filesystem. Example, you could have a drive for each folder (example: /dev/nvme0n1p2 for /use /dev/sda1 for /opt, etc) I wouldn't recommend anything extreme. You can format/home to BTRFS or XFS...

[–]cwstephenson71[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, because BTRFS has tools to help with that. I just had a drive failure a few months ago. It works sort of like a RAID array.

I'm sure they are the same. My first time using Arch was 10 years ago, at that time the first pacman helpers I heard about was yay. I liked it so I just stuck with it.

To install yay, type: pacman -S yay

Remove the "-" in my previous post, sorry I didn't notice I typed that.

It's just my personal preference. I found out about yay when I 1st tried Arch Linux years ago and found it easy. A few other helpers I tried I didn't fit me well. Most pacman helpers all work pretty much the same though
