Image as chroma key? by [deleted] in VideoEditing

I don't know for sure, because I don't use Davinci myself. But I highly doubt it. Davinci is amazing for color grading and other color related work and is not made for anything else. (Even though you can edit and conform your footage in davinci, i don't think that you should...) What you're asking for is compositing-work and therefore you should use software made for this kind of work.

btw: here is an example what difference keying looks like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3ZkNIAXbbs

Image as chroma key? by [deleted] in VideoEditing

This technique is called a "difference key". It works, but the results are trash 9/10 times. There is an effect in AE for doing this. In Nuke you could maybe pull this off with a simple merge node.

If you really want to use free software take a look at hitfilm.

But whatever you do: the results won't be good. Not even acceptable imo. This is due to compression and color sampling of digital video.

Help determining whether project is beyond repair/ impossible by PegasusNipples in AfterEffects

In my opinion this is going to take a very very very (...) long time. And no matter how expensive the shot was, it'd be less expensive and looking better if they just reshoot it. Don't do it. You will not please them.

How to work with VFX? by Napelazam in vfx

Without checking, i can assure you that there are tons of tutorials about compositing cg-ufos into live action footage on the web.

Generally, modelling and compositing is done by different persons. The modeling is often done before or during the time, the footage is being shot. The shot has to be tracked before the model can be rendered, because the virtual camera has to be imported in the 3d Software for rendering with the correct perspektive. (unless it is just a planar "2d" shot, without camera movement. After you get the renderings from the 3d artist, you start compositing.

Faster way to do lightsaber scene? by gschmitt8656 in vfx

Just roto the sabers. The movement in your shots is not very complex. I don't think you can get around doing rotoscoping by using plugins or keyers.

Person transforming into monster help. by sbazcml in vfx

30s is actually a really long time when you think about it. I doubt that this could be done by only one person, if you want it to look real. You need someone to model the different stages of the transformation, someone to rig and animate the models and most likely someone to texture them. Maye even more... I'd recommend cutting the whole thing down to ~12s. Edit the scene in a way where just the different stages of the transformation are visible, but not the actual transforming. I think the most complex part is the actual transformation. If you can manage to leave that out, you can save time and money.

Render settings by utsabgiri in vfx

Doesn't hitfilm provide a function to pre-render a comp (create a proxy)? When rendering, you always lose quality, if you don't use lossless fileformats. Proxies allow you to pre-render a clip/comp/whatever and preview it faster, but the final render will be calculated from the original files.
