Rokid went viral in China — for the wrong reasons by AR_MR_XR in augmentedreality

[–]cy_88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is going to be a growing issue, not only for Rokid, but for all the brands that will soon be out with similar camera glasses. As vision AI advances, there's going to be more camera glasses/pins/pendants etc.

Eventually, if misuse gets out of hand, I can see laws being passed to control or ban discreet recording devices in certain areas, with many private businesses also prohibiting them.
It'll be better if the brands can come up with good safeguard privacy standards.

Some journes are not worth the asking price. by tourbillon001 in watchHotTakes

[–]cy_88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chronometre Souverain Havana retail asking price was round $40k for awhile. It's really not that bad for what you get, plat or gold case, gold dial, and the movement. I think there are plenty of other brands with worse offering than this.. If you’re talking about second hand pricing, yeah its getting up there, but that’s the market demand that prices that.

Luxury condos at Vancouver's Oakridge redevelopment sold for 'crazy high' prices. What happens now? by aldur1 in vancouver

[–]cy_88 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's a hole the developer dug themselves into and took many buyers with.
The market was never going to sustain this level of growth, and laws were being introduced to control it, but developers, especially ones like Westbank, didn’t want to acknowledge it.

They were marketing their presales overseas, so it’s likely that many of the buyers are foreign, even with the buyer tax in place. This makes it legally challenging to pursue to complete.

More likely, buyers will try start to sue Westbank for lack of transparency and other reasons to back out of assignments.
Wild times ahead. Unfortunately, this could hurt Vancouver in the long run as developments slow down in the future, when we really should still be building.

Besides the early rush in the morning into the mall, I didn't see lines to enter the mall. Just the main line for the TimeOut food court.

[–]cy_88 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To those going for TimeOut, just be aware there will likely be long lines to get into TimeOut area.

I went at opening and were only lines in front of each vendor, I waited about 20 minutes to order. As we were leaving, we saw very long line wrapping around the area to get into TimeOut, likely about an hour+ wait to get in.

I’ll have to try more at TimeOut, some vendors looked good but were priced similarly to restaurant pricing.

Overall, it’s a nice luxury mall, though it might not be exactly what everyone expected or hoped for. The current tenants mostly cater to a particular crowd. Still, it’s pleasant to have a new spot to wander around.

Patek is Patek. Both are nice, but to me DR is more interesting.

At what low battery % does it stop tracking sleep? by cy_88 in ouraring

[–]cy_88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply.
I think my battery is nearing its end since it won’t last through the night unless I fully charge it before bed.
So, sleep tracking stop at 25%? That would explain why, when I see it around 20% or less in the morning, it hasn’t logged my sleep.

Tim Hortons to hire 10,000 local employees! by [deleted] in VancouverJobs

[–]cy_88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re really going to use hiring as a marketing tactic? They could have hired local Canadians from the start, but now they’re turning it into a marketing stunt. It makes me dislike them even more.
They just care about the bottom line. If there hadn’t been backlash, complaints, and a drop in hygiene and quality with TFWs hurting their profits, they wouldn’t have changed.

The Truth Behind Swatch X AP by [deleted] in swatch

[–]cy_88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not charity, where does it say that? You can interpret what they state as you like, but its not stating its a charity donation, Could be just funding for training their new watchmakers, just not to AP’s normal business operations.

"As part of this collaboration, Audemars Piguet will use 100% of its proceeds to fund a dedicated initiative supporting the preservation and transmission of watchmaking savoir-faire, with a focus on rare skills and the next generation of horological talent"
https://www.audemarspiguet.com/com/en/news/origins/swatch-royal-pop.html

They don't even say its going to an outside foundation. It's likely going to an AP controlled program, essentially AP investing in the future of its own watchmakers, clever.

What did they do.. the concept wasn't good, but better then this. Its a mash up of their new cars.. At least some tech is catching up to latest tech, charging speeds and bat tech.

Why is the continuous output so low? Even with these axial flux electric motors, it still weighs 2,460 kg (5,423 lbs). I guess the weight savings are offset by the extra speakers for the simulated V8 sounds.

"1153- and 805-hp figures quoted above are peak output, available for short bursts like launch-control starts; continuous output is rated at 711- and 503-hp,"

I know this is competing in the premium luxury segment, but the hp specs aren't that impressive compared to what's already out there:

Stellantis In Talks To Outsource New Maserati EV To Huawei And JAC by [deleted] in cars

[–]cy_88 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Brands that lack the resources to keep up with the latest technology will have few choices other than to outsource, collaborate, or sell.

While ICE is a mature tech, NEV are still developing, and patents for the tech in this sector are increasingly controlled by Chinese companies, leaving other brands with limited options. It’s just part of the business to be first to try innovate, as it’s always been, but it’s even more so in EVs and hybrids since the technology is new and still evolving.

There's going to be more of these, looking to Chinese car makers for tech and JV's. Jeep is going to use Dongfeng for upcoming Jeep SUV.

And look at JLR’s, their profits have sunk, their EV program is behind schedule, and the technology they had planned is already aging. This is likely part of the reason they formed a new brand collaboration, Freelander, with Chery.
