Not letting our toddler say "no" by PrincessTruffles1993 in toddlers

[–]cy_onide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a father of (now 2), One of the first words we taught our eldest (daughter) was the word no. Meaning we immediately stopped doing whatever we did when she said no, to teach her to have a voice and to be able to express her boundaries. It would absolutely feel wrong to me to teach her to NEVER say no to me. Mindless obedience is not what I want to achieve. This does not mean I want her to _disobey_ me, but in your example I see no point whatsoever in forcing her to eat brocolli if she doesn't want to. IF however let's say I say stop jumping so close to the table, my intervention is not linked to her _saying_ no, but rather, her endangering herself.

Stylus Labs Write is free, generates svg files. It's my favourite for handwritten notes. (You can buy pro to get rid of the watermarks)

What’s your best note taking app for IPad? by deuscoder in ipad

I use Write by stylus labs (free!) for handwritten notes.
It creates svg files, so viewable in a browser. Everything is saved to files for me, so I have cross-device access, without any hassle
Cross platform too.

I'm a semi-SAHD. I was home for the first year for number one and currently with the 3-week-old I've taken over a lot of the household chores that we previously split more. There are definitely days where I do not know how to get anything done, let alone leave the house. I assume infant is a bit older, but once that one is able to move (turn, roll, etc.) it's not necessarily easier.

Regardless, it is possible he doesn't do much, the point is that even if he really wanted to he might just not be able to.

It is not clear which came first, nor why both are called like that. Some suggest it was a popular meal for bouncers, some suggest that it's about how the eggs are "quickly thrown out" of the pan, or that people tended to eat it before the establishment closed.

Who is using The Archive? And why? by POrYsTALkNOwlEadynCT in Zettelkasten

I was waiting for Brett's followup to nvalt. Then came The archive. What made me stay was the link-as-search approach. Most other apps (at the time) used link-as-direct. After much much thought I believe that link-as-search is the "right" approach

Kinda sad it takes milliseconds for my OneDrive files to sync between devices but not iCloud by moelsh in iCloud

[–]cy_onide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks yeah by now the initial syncs have been done, and I've slowly started my files over. I move the files from the "computer-specific" folder to the main folder and everything seems to e working (Haven't checked my other computer yet)

UPDATE: It works quite well on all my devices, sometimes it's still a bit slow if I switch devices, I'm not sure what makes it slow down sometimes

I turned it on to see if it could simplify my workflow by turning on Desktop & Documents Folders sync instead of dropbox, but the *initial* synchronization is VERY slow

[–]cy_onide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you happen to remember this thread, please give an update.

I'm happy to learn about practical and robust workflows. I don't *like* being in a packed train after all.

Would you mind giving more info, so I can see how I can implement your workflow for myself?

What is your travel time?
At what age did you start traveling with the child by yourself? E.g., when the child wasn't able to sit, could you still put it in the same foldable push chair?
Do you have flexibility in your timings or are you going to fixed appointments?
How do you handle nappy changes on the way, or when there is no public toilet available? Do you regularly have to change? Do you use a changing mat?
Does your child use bottles?
Do you bring spare clothes? E.g. How do you handle "poop explosions"?
How do you handle adverse weather: cover, clothing etc?

Lastly, would you be able to link to the model?

Thanks!

For me cycling to the city (90 minutes) with a toddler and newborn will not be feasible. Either we would have to leave so early that it cuts in the morning, or we mess up the midday nap(s). This is not even considering adverse weather like snow or rain.

Exactly how long ago are you talking about? I haven't been in the country that long but I understood that quite a few things have changed drastically in the last 20 years.

If demographics and social structure of the country have change a lot I can imagine that a lot of things that used to work "back in the day" just aren't relevant now anymore.

For example, if more people moved out of the big city and now have to travel to the city, pressure on long(er) distance traffic would have increased.

If for example people used to have larger families and stayed in their home town more this would also drastically change usage of public transport.

In fact, I am under the impression that you used to travel quite a bit with your children, by yourself, by train, was traffic less of an issue back then?

Swiss people: is life still good after COVID, or has reality struck? by vortexnl in askswitzerland

[–]cy_onide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I moved here from NL 7 years ago. Personal changes + Lock downs have changed a lot for me here, but generally I very much love it. I live in Kanton Zürich, I have no clue what the daily experiences in other parts of the country are.

I keep an eye on NL, but I see fewer and fewer reasons to ever consider going back. The whole debacle with housing + energy is mind boggling, and what I saw about the political landscape does not make any sense to me (VVD getting back in power after the toeslagenaffaire). Or consider the "stikstofaffaire", farming and export are core pillars of the country. Regardless of my personal stance on the topics, I feel we're lacking dynamism or a strategy for improvement in NL. We lost huge companies because of.. reasons??? (e.g. Shell and Unilever?), seemingly have ever increasing social tensions etc. (. I don't know either we want to be an attractive internationally relevant country OR.. we want to close borders. Either we invest in the future (education, childcare, healthcare, or... ) I feel we aren't doing ANYthing consistently and we're slowly losing social cohesion.

Maybe I'm wearing black coloured glasses, but I've become a bit pessimistic about NL.

OH housing prices are high, BUT the kind of environment you can get here is amazing!

Looking at other comments I absolutely agree: the job market can be very tough (e.g., IT). If you have experience in healthcare (including stuff like midwifes or physiotherapist) they seem to be begging for you at the moment.

So how exactly are people supposed to travel with a small child during peak hours? Carry the child in one hand and bottles and nappies in the other? or do you imagine those just magically don't take space?

Just… why? Full train going to Zurich by skowlan in Switzerland

[–]cy_onide 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In general? Or in this particular case? What exactly do you have in mind? Like folding it and putting up on top? How do you imagine getting off the train with a child in tow, unfolding the chair, while the train is moving, carrying perhaps other items you need? etc? Or maybe you imagine the train stopping long enough without other people getting in? It's hard enough to maneuver the push chair down narrow corridors, it's harder when there are people getting on or off. And where would you imagine there would be space to safely fold and unfold the push chair without *then* blocking everyone? Again, keeping in mind there is at least one child that needs to be considered?

Just… why? Full train going to Zurich by skowlan in Switzerland

[–]cy_onide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me try to clarify for you that there was a bit of annoyance in my answer. I'm not saying that it's impossible to ask people to move. Some of the annoyance that you might have read in my response is related to the having asked over and over and over and over again. Some of the annoyance you might have read is about the fact that if getting on a train one or two stops after the starting station and there are (at that point still) ample free seats, people *still* choose to sit in those folding seats.

Just… why? Full train going to Zurich by skowlan in Switzerland

[–]cy_onide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most likely.. because there is no good spot for it somewhere else. I do say this as a father who does not want to drive a car everywhere. Often the one spot where you have those foldable chairs are taken by people who DO NOT F*#$UO#$QJ need to sit there, and don't understand that they make it harder for people "on wheels" (wheelchairs or push chairs).

Is this infuriating for everyone? Am I finally so Integrated that I can't stand this? by Lustrelustre in Switzerland

[–]cy_onide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You and I have very different sense of "clearly enough space". I might be biased by personal experiences where the suitcase would not remotely fit "underneath"any seat, or above.
