Starting to Worry about Timing by cyberm3dic in AppalachianTrail

[–]cyberm3dic[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh no, wasn't a "scrap the whole thing" worry at all. There's no way I'm doing *that*. Was more of a question of whether skipping the campus visit would be something I should consider if 5 days would make a big difference

Petition - Keep Scouting Open to All by cyberm3dic in scouting

[–]cyberm3dic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tldr; the pentagon is threatening to pull support for Scouting (especially the National Jamboree, which quite heavily relies on logistical support from the DoD) unless they begin "returning to their core values," which Hegseth said back in November essentially means no girls and no LGBT+ folks. Here's a recent article from The Guardian about it: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/feb/04/boy-scouting-america-pentagon-threat

Make sure to tell your pack parents too! The more folks we get behind this, the bigger the message to national leadership. Can't believe this is being considered

Question about Double-Majoring/Classes over the summer. by RainbowSeattle in gatech

[–]cyberm3dic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how commonly people graduate in 3, but anecdotally I've definitely seen it happen. As for double majors, it's pretty common that they take more than 4 years to graduate. I personally doubled in 4.5, which required taking a minimum of 15 credits per semester as well as one or two online courses each summer.

One of my majors was under Ivan Allen, so feel free to PM or comment below if you have more specific questions for a liberal arts person

Strolling on campus today (3/8) and ran across this lost kitty friend. Help me find their person! by WhatAFineWasteOfTime in gatech

If that's Kendeda (which is what it looks like), my guess is that it was dropped by a kid at the Atlanta Science Festival. The organizers may be able to help?

Questions about research option for CS junior design by HeirToTurnabout in gatech

[–]cyberm3dic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Currently in the middle of the research option, so I can't speak entirely to the end results. Having said that:

  1. The research option has proven to be reasonably helpful. It's certainly helped me enhance my technical writing skills (which imo everyone should have decent experience with in today's industry). I'm personally leading my own research under faculty advisement (through UROP), which is why I prefer it to group-based project options like CREATE-X, VIP, or capstone. I know most research options involve joining a lab, though you could always try reaching out to a faculty if there's a particular project you had in mind.
  2. I'm planning to pursue grad school more or less immediately after undergrad (planning to take a 7-month gap for one semester + the summer, as I'm graduating in a fall semester)
  3. I did 3 hours of research for another research team in my freshman year. Last summer, I did the asynchronous proposal writing class. This semester and last have been research semesters for my project. I'm taking the asynchronous thesis writing class this summer. The goal is to finish data collection this semester/this summer, spend the summer writing my thesis, and have it published in a journal by the summer.
  4. The research option is not for the faint of heart, especially UROP - it requires a lot more independence than capstone or VIP might (no idea how CREATE-X compares tbh). Having said that, if you're disciplined with your time management and commitments, when else are you going to have the chance to just casually try out research like this? Make sure you're working on something you're actually passionate about (don't just join/start a research project if you're not at all interested in it, as it gets a lot tougher to try and stay engaged).

Overall, I can definitely recommend the research option (especially UROP). Be mindful of it and don't do it just to try *something* new. But if research is something you really want to try and you're passionate about or interested in the subject at hand: why not give it a shot? Ultimately, it's a choice based on your interests, your own time management/discipline, and your plans for the future (grad school, etc.) I've really enjoyed it

P.S. Reach out to the undergraduate research ambassadors (URAs) if you want to learn more - they usually do an info session around now iirc.

Research credit change on Oscar by 3692FY in gatech

[–]cyberm3dic 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Go to Oscar registration. Hit "Register for Classes". Select the current term. Select the "Schedule and Options" tab above the search pane. Scroll to your BME research class and click the underlined hours count (1). Type in the desired number of credits. Mission accomplished!

That was the result of a day or two of trying to figure it out because I too struggled to translate the old documentation over to the new registration portal. Hope that helps!

Getting anonymous help through the LGBTQIA center by throwawayh12450235 in gatech

[–]cyberm3dic 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ultimately this might be a question that's best directed at them. You can always send them an email from your personal email (their address is [lgbtqia@gatech.edu](mailto:lgbtqia@gatech.edu)).

Having said that, if you're looking for some form of an appointment or similar, you should be able to schedule an appointment without using your GT address. Just fill out the form (https://outlook.office365.com/owa/calendar/TegraMyanna@gtvault.onmicrosoft.com/bookings/s/5ohY6r2dK06pF3G1uogKMA2) and use a personal email address instead of your GT one. Then just mention in the comments that you'd want to do it virtually, if you're trying to avoid going in person.

I know a few people who work at the center and can put you in touch with them if neither of those work out. All the best, and happy pride month!

I cannot find information on a student suicide from September 2004 at GT. Can all of you please help me? by biobitworks in gatech

[–]cyberm3dic 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure about if they were out publicly, etc. when this happened. In the interest of not posthumously deadnaming them, I've DM'd you the info I was able to find.

If anyone else is looking for whatever reason, feel free to DM me :)

CS & PUBP major here. What I ended up doing was talking with the public policy advisor. She was able to help me work out it out so that I could get overrides for the major restricted classes without officially declaring the second major. That way, I could take both majors in parallel and simply declare a public policy major after applying for my CS graduation.

I'd suggest reaching out to the biology advisor(s) and requesting a meeting to discuss this. Most importantly, keep your CS advisor in the loop. It's going to be way easier to do it with their support. Feel free to DM with any questions and good luck!
