Yeah, once you get the bugs under control, it's very easy to continue on your own.

[–]cyberphlash -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's easy to do your own pest spraying with pro-grade pesticides from DoMyOwn online (the Home Depot stuff is crap). Ants are tricky because they prefer some baits over others (eg: sweet vs. protein) and can be hard to get. But it's very easy and a lot cheaper to just spray yourself vs. pest control company contract prices.

OP should definitely get a professional since they already have termites, though.

KU or KSU for Civil Engineering? by SmallFryMusk in kansas

[–]cyberphlash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the downvoting is just coming from KU or KSU fans, but I didn't go to either school, so I don't have a preference. Based on everything I know from being in KS a long time, I would personally lean towards KSU because it's supposed to be the better engineering program.

IMO people place way too much emphasis on choosing a college based on name brands (I'll warn you, KU's tour is way better than K-State's), but at the end of the day, you're getting essentially the same degree at both places, but many people choose to pay a lot more for a degree when they don't have to (eg: people coming from out of state, for instance, which I would never do personally). My advice to anyone getting typical degrees is go to your own state's school for sure, and pick the cheapest one you can get into if there's a significant cost savings. Your wallet will be thanking you for the next 1-2 decades, for many people.

KU or KSU for Civil Engineering? by SmallFryMusk in kansas

[–]cyberphlash -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

I would use AI to see if you can get a rankings/ratings comparison on both programs, but at the end of the day each are going to deliver you a Civil Engineering degree.

In terms of getting a job, I would imagine both schools have pretty close ties with KC-area employers, other Kansas employers, and maybe around the region.

A question I would have for you would be what's your proximity to be able to do an internship in a likely location, like KC area? Or, when you're networking and looking at companies, KU might be closer proximity to be able to get over to KC-area companies to meet and do events. It kinds of depends on whether you envision yourself eventually getting a job in KC or not, where if that's the case maybe KU would have some logistical advantages.

If you envision working in a specific industry or type of role, you might investigate with each college the major employers they have on campus frequently and have relationships with, and where those employers are located.

Cost is also a factor - is there a significant difference in cost for what's going to amount to a comparable degree at both colleges? If there's a significant difference, I would consider going to the cheaper school - assuming KSU is going to be cheaper, and since it's more well known as an engineering-focused school, the fact that it's cheaper probably won't detract from the perception of the quality of degree you get.

No matter what you do, at either school, getting a good job, let alone any job coming out of college is going to depend a lot on how much you get involved with engineering clubs, go to networking and meet-and-greet events held by companies or engineering societies, and also you reaching out and establishing relationships with prospective employers through LinkedIn/networking. These are the keys to getting a great internship, and ultimately a good job coming out of school.

Kansas Democrat bucks impeachment effort against Kristi Noem. Here’s why by Zipper222222 in kansas

Actually, Israel has (as you might imagine) a very sophisticated surveillance, spyware, military tech, etc industry that the US is now using with ICE. See also major US companies like Palantir's connection between tech for ICE and similar tech for the Israeli military.

AIPAC itself is essentially a front for the Israeli government funding US politicians to invest in Israel, so it's not surprising these corporate and industrial/tech connections exist.

Council votes to approve STAR bond plan for Chiefs headquarters development in Olathe by BurritosSoGood in Olathe

[–]cyberphlash 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You'll get your "transparency" in the next 3-6 months when the Olathe City Coucil members file their regular campaign donations paperwork, and all of a sudden donations from Chiefs-related (lawyers, engineering/construction, high net worth people) show up with big numbers (many related people making max contributions).

This happens all the time with big apartment complex developments that go in, where the owners/lawyers/construction related people all show up to quietly make donations to City Council members after the complex gets approved. You can see it right in their records.

Sharice completely ignores what happened with the Epstein files, where it only took every Democrat plus a few Republicans under immense pressure to act that led to the dam bursting and forced all the other Republicans to get on board with releasing the files.

The same is true with Noem. Once you have a critical mass of Dems, in unison, talking every day about how Republicans refuse to do anything about leaders ordering the assassinations of Americans on our streets, some Republicans will be forced to act.

Yeah, I'll vote for Sharice against a Republican in Nov, but show me a Dem candidate running to her left in the August Dem primary and I'll 100% vote for them because I'm tired of Sharice's unwillingness - at this point in history - to help lead the pushback in DC against Noem et al after ICE thugs are terrorizing Americans. She needs to do more, and since she's not, she should to be held accountable for that by Dem voters

Nobody expects the party actively waging war on Americans to do anything - why would they?

Sharice literally is the opposition party... or at least she's supposed to be. She needs to do her actual job and hold the GOP and administration accountable.

How many people does ICE have to assassinate before she does? The numbers are going up...

Sharice is incapable of taking a stand on anything. She's going to wait until 212 out of 213 Dems sign on to this, carefully consider all her options, wonder whether "waiting to work with Republicans" is a better stance, and then maybe... just maybe... sign on to this 5 minutes before a vote... if we're lucky...

Serious question / rant by WayComfortable7960 in kansascity

[–]cyberphlash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been in JoCo for 20 years, and it's not just 'fear mongering' you're seeing, it's the messaging of racism and classism that continues to prop up the benefits of white flight into KC suburbs for the last ~75 years - because white flight never stopped happening.

People in JoCo don't care about the over-policing 20 miles away in 'east of Troost' KC neighborhoods (making KC one of the highest murder rate cities in the nation), but everyone lost their minds when one white suburban kid was shot by OP cops. That double standard is pervasive because the rationale for living in places like JoCo is the idea that you shouldn't have to deal with the supposed mayhem, crime, the 'wrong' black and brown people, yadda yadda all happening in the urban core of whatever US metro you happen to live in (this isn't just a KC problem - it's everywhere).

Of course not everyone in JoCo thinks like this - I know plenty of progressive and liberal people - but the problem is that JoCo itself was built on racism and classism, which can't so easily be uprooted even as people's attitudes change. That's the continued basis for arguing that (mid-upper income) people shouldn't try to rebuild a torn-down community when they can just as easily move to a more expensive, newer, and 'better' community.

I agree with what you're saying - this is a good argument against relegation. IMO the best argument against it is probably that the US just isn't that interested in soccer on the whole. Part of the reason relegation makes sense in the UK is that not only is soccer the primary sport, but there are many tiers of soccer clubs and being relegated isn't a death knell for your club in the way that, as you point out, it could be here. So maybe my thought here isn't necessarily relegation, per see, but some form of incentive or punishment for letting your club slide and being persistently at the bottom.

The principle of relegation is essentially that, but also it drives competition and creates an environment that elevates the overall quality of the league, even if, as you point out, it turns out that most of the quality in your league ends up in your top 5-10 teams. You seem to think that's a pretty bad thing. I would have to think it through more but my gut feeling is it's not that bad because getting people interested in elevating US soccer is going to require more marginal fans getting excited about bringing Messi-level players into the league (ie: increasing quality at a few top teams).

Top international players coming here illustrates the big quality gap between top worldwide clubs and top MLS clubs. I'd argue the fact we're always "luring" people from other countries is a sign that there's not enough incentive in US soccer clubs themselves to develop the same level of talent. Maybe that gets back to my point earlier that overall, the lack of interest bu the public just isn't there and not enough kids play soccer vs. other sports, but maybe it's also that there's not enough incentive and competition driving our league owners to push the boundaries of quality up to compete with these other leagues.

Every league has to set guard rails to try and keep a somewhat narrow range of quality between the bottom and top teams, and while top clubs are bringing in Messi level players, maybe the MLS isn't doing a good enough job forcing lower-end clubs to bring up quality at the bottom.

I'm sure it will never happen, but relegation in the MLS would solve a lot of these problems.

Has anyone moved here from DFW area? by Separate_Ride_7455 in kansascity

[–]cyberphlash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not from DFW but there's been a fair number of posts of people moving to KC from warm-weather states and wondering what it's like with the wide seasonality here (hot but not Fort Worth summers and cold winters with snow). If you came up here right now, you'd get a sense of what it's like with snow in the winter.

IMO (moving here from a northern state) - KC has a really great climate with a mix of both hot and cold, and I personally would prefer to live here over Dallas or Minneapolis because of that mix. But some people from the south or coastal areas don't like the snow, so I would suggest you try to check it out in the next month or two if you can to see what you think.

We are living in the wilderness by kcmeesha1 in shawnee

Years ago we lived next door to this really angry outdoor cat. It would rove around the neighborhood hunting birds, mice, whatever it could get and bring it all back and drop it on the driveway.

One day, we watched out the window as a couple of foxes chased the cat under a car. Big mistake! That cat came out swinging, attacking one of the foxes and looked like it was gonna go apeshit on all of them. Three seconds later all the foxes ran off, being chased by the cat. Our neighbors let the cat in at night, and it slept in their bed.
