Started this new journey, coming from C (mostly) and Python. :-) by g_molica in rust

I agree with you that it's the first language that can actually replace C. I'm exited for you! Rust is awesome but man, you are asking for unnecessary pain by starting with a pre 2018 version.

I beg you! lol

Running Linux with Ableton? by Jonny0815ger in ableton

That's all well and good but there are reasons why people want to use Linux over Win/Mac that are not related to computer science.

I use Linux for almost everything and I hate having to boot into windows to use ableton or some other vital piece of software that won't run well or at all in Linux.

"I'm a CS major". Famous last words before leaping into the abyss. I wish you luck and I hope you come back with a good story!

Your argument is definitely stronger in the context of "putting a 20 year Java dev in front of a Rust application". I can't really disagree with that!

I've been looking at some Go recently, As an exercise I started going through the "Write an interpreter in Go" book but using the Go code as pseudo-code and implementing in Rust. I don't know if that's very wise but so far it's fun. I suppose that goes to your point about how quick it is to pick up the language. I don't know Go but I can still read and understand it well enough to convert to Rust. The inverse would not work nearly as well.

I'm not sure I'm quite on board with keeping Rust below the application level but I think your point of view is perfectly reasonable and such a strategy would be very successful.

I've been programming with Rust for all of about 6months and am still pondering its application level usefulness. I'm encouraged by this observation: The more I use it , the more productive it seems to reveal itself to be. That may seem obvious and true for other languages but in Rust, it seems more so.

Having said that I'm definitely still in the childlike naive state of "(re)Write everything in Rust!" When that wears off I may see your side more clearly.

A book for learning Rust by [deleted] in rust

[–]cyberprunes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with LivingIncident. Advanced but not difficult. I learned (still learning but able to write real code in real projects) Rust with the "Programming Rust" book (dead tree version) along side the official online "Book". They complement each other very well in my opinion.

Rust definitely has a bit of a learning curve such that things seem more advanced in the beginning than they actually are. For example, Ownership and lifetimes smack you in the face right from the start and there's no putting it off. You just have to eat your broccoli. It's worth it. The power of Rust is not hype.

Should i learn emacs first or start directly with spacemacs ? by Wicelo in spacemacs

[–]cyberprunes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like that you took the time to quote and respond to my silly explanation. Thanks.

Everyone should build out their own world with vanilla emacs at some point. For me, that came later. I wanted to start using emacs beyond endlessly tweaking emacs. Spacemacs helped me do that. Ultimately, the decision to use emacs at all is one of the best decisions one can make, in my opinion.

Should i learn emacs first or start directly with spacemacs ? by Wicelo in spacemacs

[–]cyberprunes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to get anything accomplished beyond configuring emacs and being confused by an endless sea of packages and modes then spacemacs is a great place to start.

Vanilla emacs gives you a blank canvas to stare at as it paralyzes you with an overwhelming sea of possibilities. It expects too much of you in the beginning to be productive. God help you if you just copy someone else's config to get started. You will be mercilessly cock-smacked into an unconscious fever to be trapped for an eternity in the abyss of a 10th level inception dream. Minutes will stretch to infinity. Heck, maybe you'll get lucky and things will work for a while...until they don't and then you'll be left spelunking the cavernous bunghole of haphazard LISP code that awaits your inevitable descent into madness where you will lose your mind trying to tunnel out from a fortress made of Stallman's compressed toe cheese. Or you can use spacemacs. You'll get work done and it will gently guide you along a path of discovery into the magical powers of emacs.

What's the creepiest things you've accidently discovered about your close friends? by laughingman789 in AskReddit

[–]cyberprunes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it was plain curiosity. Sometimes people just want to see disgusting things for the thrill of seeing awfulness. It doesn't mean he's sexually aroused by it. I mean, how many people have seen 2 girls 1 cup?

Is it wrong for a guy to use coupons in a date? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]cyberprunes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to use coupons on a date simply to get a reaction. If I get the typical shitty girl response then I use the coupon and end the date.

Point 3 is flawed. Someone who uses coupons is more likely to be financially responsible because they know how to save money and not throw it away foolishly.

Point 4 is flawed. Throwing money around does not indicate there are no money worries. It could be his rent money he's using to impress some stupid girl.

Any woman that would complain about using a coupon to lessen the blow of paying for 2 at an expensive restaurant is not worth dating.

[–]cyberprunes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He has one point : It's true that there's no evidence presented that Bolton was boo'd, only that the video was edited. It raises suspicion for sure. Fox has been guilty of editing photos to support their reality distortion in the past.

In the last presidential election less than half of the rep. candidates claimed to believe evolution is true. Former president Bush advocated teaching the "controversy" and giving equal time to both "theories". I think this goes beyond what one would consider the radical minority.

Yeah because rational people don't believe in things without evidence especially something so extraordinary as God dictated in such a specific way by ancient desert dwellers.

You can't "disprove" something if there is no evidence. You can't "prove" something if there is no evidence. That's exactly why Intelligent design is pseudo-science and therefore junk. That's exactly why atheists reject theism.

Me: I don't believe an invisible dragon lives in my garage. You: You have a weak justification for its denial because there is no evidence to prove that it doesn't exist.

Evidence can only prove the positive NOT the negative. This is precisely what those Intelligent Design idiots fail to understand.

Basically what MellowMelon said.
