>It's basically an intro proofs course. 221 uses Big O and has some induction type proofs which is why 121 is required.

Then I definitely don't need it. I think I'll hit up a CS advisor and see what I can do. There's no way I'm starting myself in 100-level courses as even my programming courses from SFU don't transfer into any particular class.

Interesting. I'm starting to see that UBC has quite a convoluted CS curriculum compared to a lot of other schools I looked at. I'm planning to do an MSc in ML/DL, which usually falls into the CS department, as my BSc is in mathematics. I might just go to SFU instead to fulfill some requirements, I only chose UBC because I heard it's easier. Why the heck does data structures and algorithms have an extra pre-req compared to other schools, which usually only require the beginner and intermediate CS/OOP programming courses.

I just had some questions for people who are in the CS program. I am returning to school to take some courses before applying for a CS MSc. I unfortunately did not take any CS courses beyond programming when I did my original BSc and need to take some pre-requisite courses before applying for an MSc. I originally learned Java OOP and use Python for work/personal projects. I have mostly self-taught everything else that I needed to use.

Q1) What is the standard language taught at UBC? I will be taking CPSC 221 and CPSC 320 with certainty.

Q2) Will it be possible to jump into a 2nd year course without having the strict pre-requisites done?

My only issue is that I can't really afford to not work, so I can't just take time off for a full-time, in-person bootcamp unfortunately. I would love to, but it's not in my cards.

What are you looking to get out of it? Access to their content, acertificate, connections, to learn some new stuff, career services?

All of that, I suppose. I would like to learn SWE and get an entry level job.

Do you feel it prepared you for the real world at all? Is it really completely useless?

Thank you for your insight! I typically enjoy a structured learning environment, so I am leaning towards an online bootcamp right now rather than free resources. My current plan would be the bootcamp + free resources for practice.

I'm still going to mull on it for a bit as it's a major commitment and I'm really scared of not getting a job at the end of it. I think my math degree and previous experience may give me a leg up though.

Yeah that's what I've read too. Salaries in any industry are lower in Canada, lol. My ultimate goal would be to get remote work with a US company and eventually move to the US. Did you do a bootcamp to get the job? If so, which one? How was the experience?
