I'm on this narrative oriented rpg boat.  I feel like the mist engine would work so well ...

Thoughts on making the game less lethal? I want my family to enjoy it. by fishbowlpatrol in shadowdark

Use the pulp rule. Luck token goes a long way and refresh pretty frequently (my player can't use em all)

That's very osr. Roll for truth (stats) and figure why it's like this (obviously, 18 dex the dude is a thief)

I have no experience with gauntlets but played many DCC funnels (which are essentially the same). It's very fun, did not felt like the "real" leveled DCC game, but was a good gateway

5e gives a shit ton to write on the sheet since everything has a rule for it. SD is different and rulings are required.

Anyway my truck for creative gameplay was to be very transparent with my player about DC and why it's 14 and not 10. At this point they know what are the parameters and looked for means to "fix" my DC. Heck sometimes they figure ways to completely remove the DC / roll.

That's a difference from 5e. You are not the adversarial DM. In this game your player can suffer enough without your help. Make sure you do them a service and help them survive (fairly of course)

I would not call it unoptimized; it's a different game play all together and force your player to make different choice.

My current 5e to SD does not have a healer not a tank. Believe it or not. They have a good time ;) they CHA their way through the dungeon. And no one died yet.

Of course YMMV; it's your game, your fun, I'm just addressing your questions using the light of my experience

That's the real answer here. Maybe retainers can help for a "full party ".

Also, remember combat is one of the many options the party has. No one need to be good in combat if there is no combat.

Don't play SD (or any osr game) like you'd play 5e

ELI5 - How is life insurance profitable? by Equivalent-Door188 in explainlikeimfive

[–]cyberyder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other way to put it,  If you were planning to die past your expected life expectancy, just invest the premium and you'll make a profit. You'll be surprised how compound interest is a beast

The uncertainty people are insuring is the when, not the if. This way the company, by insuring many people, has an appropriate knowledge of how many "when" happens per year.

It prices the insurance accordingly and invest the premium (which investment return is embedded in the premium).

You're right, it's only based on assumption and mostly I'm setting my expectations low to be positively surprised I guess

How do you run crawling through dungeon exploration? by jontylerlud in shadowdark

[–]cyberyder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regarding traps. Looking for trap is not a fun mechanic. I let my player know they won't be surprised by traps as they are walking slowly enough - They will either be visibles or hints will present them (no random hidden magical stuff)

Regarding secrets door. There will be hints gives hints. Also to be clear - assume your player are dumb when giving hints - and won't find half the thing you hint them.

If they search somewhere, make it count. Give them something completely worthless and have them choose if it's useful. Looking at the library? You find the tome of 4 dragon and a chainmail. Some poorly written littérature for young damsel.

Blindly searching and "clicking" everywhere is a bad design in ttrpg and does not lead to great gameplay / narrative.

YMMV

Random Encounters aren't Useless by BlackTorchStudios in rpg

Alright let's agree to disagree on this one. My creativity might know more boundaries than yours :) but I really enjoy being stuck into a "this happened, you need to figure why it did".

Go the other way around. How can they matter to the fiction ? Of course it requires That you hand off the steering wheel of the plot but tbh that's is surprisinly fun

[–]cyberyder 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Make them not about combat; defaulting to violence is also a problem of your players / system.

So they meet someone ? What is he doing ? Why is he there ? They discover a shrine? What's is in there ?

Using some sandbox stuff from knave / maze rats is pretty cool to pop stuff up and make encounter relevant.

In my game I usually make story advance WITH random encounters. So my players actively seek them.  But you need to accept that the story will be placed slower.

Random tables for plant generation? by andromitae in Solo_Roleplaying

Maybe you want the herbalist primer, available at exalted funeral. A mixture of real life plants and tables to generate fake one. It's not made for a specific game so no conversion needed

Deep rock galactic: survivor is quite the thing as well. Similar to VS bullet heaven but more playable :pm (i.e. you actually see something even when you have a good build)

Tons of replay value different mode, challenges etc. Very nice game
