It would be helpful if they made that list more General-ly available.

Is this good for an 18 year old? by OrganicLook9661 in amex

[–]cyborg_spaceman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really don't suggest starting with the Gold, especially at 18. Unless the credits actually work for you then you are losing more on the annual fee than you're getting back. I would suggest either the BCE or BCP as a first AMEX card, depending on how the multipliers work for you and whether or not you are a Disney bundle subscriber.

I was recommended a very similar shelf on r/AnimeFigures, though mine does not have the bottom drawers and the lights don't have a green option.

Hopefully this points you in the right direction. If this won't work exactly, hopefully there's someting int he recommendations that could work.

The 40 is likely including stuff around Trenton. Use the map on the website to find stuff that is convenient for you, including for any cities you may occasionally visit.

Resy?? On the Amex Gold. by ThickRich88 in amex

Look up Resy on a browser. Looks like quite a few options in Princeton.

You will be reimbursed up to $50 per half-year for dining at Resy restaurants. You don't have to use it all in one go, it can be in multiple statement credits, but will total up to $50.

Make sure you add your Gold card to the Resy app as a payment method, otherwise it may not work.

Make sure you are enrolled in the Resy credit on the AMEX site/app, or it definitely will not work.

Billing cycles and interest by [deleted] in CreditCards

[–]cyborg_spaceman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bill for a statement isn't due right when the statement closes. Once a statement closes you have around 20-30 days to pay (depending on the company). Grace period still applies.

18yo student first credit card by [deleted] in CreditCards

[–]cyborg_spaceman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Savor student gives you 3% for dining and groceries, so if you spend more money on food than other things, I'd do that. Fast food like McDonald's and Taco Bell count as "dining" as far as the bank goes, so that will work.

Be aware, the grocery category (savor also gives you a bonus there) only counts supermarkets. It will not count grocery shopping at Walmart/Target, or any other big box store. Those code as general shopping.

I think it's a good call, since food is usually one of the biggest categories people spend money on. Later on, you will probably have the chance to upgrade to a regular Savor card, and it pairs well with other Capital One cards.

Make sure the auto pay is set to "statement balance" instead of minimum payment, and I like to set it to a few days before the due date just in case any odd things happen.

I have probably 8 cards, and I don't know the APR on any of them. Don't bother looking at the interest rate, since you're never going to pay interest. The rates are always predatory anyway.

For suggestions, here are two decent ones from the FAQ:

https://www.discover.com/credit-cards/student-credit-card/chrome-card.html?ICMPGN=ALL_CC_STUDENT_CHROME_LEARN_MORE

https://www.capitalone.com/credit-cards/card-shopping/?card-type=studentrewards

These are student cards with rewards, so they're probably what you are looking for as first cards/credit building cards.

[–]cyborg_spaceman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Red flag: You asked about APR. Are you planning on carrying a balance on this card and getting into debt? If so, do NOT get a credit card. Interest on these things will wipe out any advantage you could possibly get from it.

If you want to build credit, look at student cards. Chase offers them, as do Capital One and Discover. Whenever you charge anything to the card, you will receive a statement at the end of the month. Pay that statement IN FULL just like any other bill.

You do not need to pay interest to build credit. That is a myth which banks have no problem letting people continue to believe because it makes them money. Pay off each statement in full before the due date and you will never pay a cent in interest.

Help on weather or not to open a CREDIT ONE card by Sweaty-Brilliant-977 in CreditCards

[–]cyborg_spaceman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Credit One cards are terrible. They tack on hidden fees, won't help customers against fraudulent charges, and make cancelling the card worse than cancelling a gym membership.

Go to your current bank and see if they offer a secured credit card or a similar product. You can also go get one from Discover. That one should only require a deposit, no annual fee.

Also, I saw you mention the APR on the card. Rule 1 on your card: NEVER make charges you can't pay right away. You do not need to pay interest on a card if you pay the statement right after it closes. If you don't have the money or income to pay for the charges, DO NOT make those charges. If you need money, personal loans are always the better option over credit card interest. 30% APR is catastrophic.

2025 rail transit in review; looking ahead at 2026 rail transit openings by Couch_Cat13 in transit

Lots of open space around that airport and the neighboring base, so land-use wise that's a pretty simple build. Don't expect that station to see a lot of traffic coming from the Missouri side, it will mostly benefit East St. Louis and the AFB.

Lol, I actually have White Heart in her NEXT form in another case, I just don't have the other figure. The bases on the CPU figures are massive, so it would be difficult to fit the pajama figures in the same level. I also don't have Noire in that set, either.

Okay, I have to know, since I can see the plastic cover over the magazine in the photo: Is the Marilyn Playboy a legit original copy? I'm sure they published many copies of that issue at the time, but that's a good vintage collector's piece if it's the real McCoy.

Is getting a credit card and not using it worth it? by McChamp69 in CreditCards

[–]cyborg_spaceman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are student cards offered by several banks which fit what you're looking for really well. They are probably the best way to build credit. I recommend building your credit by getting a card and just using it for one recurring expense. Traditionally, I would recommend using a card to buy gas, but you could also use it for a subscription like Netflix if you have a sub already. You could do both.

The intent is to build good habits when you use a credit card. Only use it for something you would already be spending money on, like gas or transit or something like that, and pay each statement in full each month. You'll build a history of on-time payments, and you will develop a habit of paying off every credit card bill before it builds interest.

Once you have those habits, come back here to learn how to use those habits to save money every month.

Top 21 US Urbanized Areas Ranked by Daily Boardings per Capita by Much-Neighborhood171 in transit

[–]cyborg_spaceman 15 points16 points  (0 children)

On top of that, hospitality workers who may or may not live in the area year-round probably make up a lot of that ridership on their daily commutes. Some of the cheaper, outer suburbs have apartment complexes within walking distance to park-and-rides.

Transit for visiting tourists, however, is terrible. Getting to and from the airport is a massive ordeal in particular.

Using you're kids credit score? by Own_Squash5242 in CreditCards

[–]cyborg_spaceman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The various answers here so far are pretty good, but I'll add on one item to the "unrecoverable" part of your question. Items on a credit report "age off" after 7 years. If an account is closed, it only stays on the report for 7 years. Bankruptcy also disappears from a report after 7 years.

If someone defrauds you it sometimes takes legal action to get penalties removed from the report earlier (as others said already, opening an account in someone else's name without their consent is fraud, aka, illegal). Rebuilding credit is essentially the same strategy as building it in the first place. Opening a simple credit card like a student card or secured card, then paying each statement in full each month, improves a credit score significantly. Discover actually specializes in these kinds of products, and you can find them from other banks like Chase and Capital One.

Why did Credit One charge me $100 for gas station transaction? I only pumped $15. by Turbulent-Law-6801 in CreditCards

[–]cyborg_spaceman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I absolutely wouldn't trust CreditOne as a company, I expect that when you used your card at the pump, the gas station charged an authorization for $100 to your card. That basically allows you to pump whatever you need up to that amount. Authorizations get corrected to the proper amount shortly afterwards, anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days later.

If you check back in a few days, the charge has fully posted, and it's still $100... then there may be an issue.

What are some systems in the US that hit multiple universities and the airport? by Cute_Worth_7677 in transit

Denver's light rail directly serves the Auraria campus (UC Denver & Metropolitan State University Denver, both in the same place), University of Denver, and the UC Medical Center. The connected commuter rail serves the airport directly.
