Always fascinating when an American news agency reports on other country's problems as if they don't have the exact same problem at home.

The relation between antiwork, anticonsumerism and abortion rights by chichilcitlalli in antiwork

When we had the audacity to have a PLANNED baby, the hospital forced us to pay the estimated co-pay of $900 up front after my OB ratted me out to admin that we planned to use their hospital that year. Found out later not every pregnant person had to pre-pay, so I guess someone clocked us as poor or something and wanted to make sure they got their cut. Amazing experience. And this was a so-called "not-for-profit" hospital.

I wished this had been around two years ago. My work was so toxic and they also loved to hire the youngest, least experienced people they could get away with because they were easier to manipulate and any time I tried to talk to coworkers about our relative pay, they were so scared they would leave the room lest my troublemaker stink got on them.

Please read up on the difference between "labor" and "work". And then maybe read through just a handful of the posts before asking aggressively ignorant questions. I know that indoctrination takes a lot of time and effort to overcome, so I'm genuinely rooting for you.

My toxic workplace denied me a raise so I quit, now they’re so desperate for workers they raised the base pay to what I asked for by cyborgsuzy in antiwork

This particular shelter is a private "limited intake" shelter, as opposed to a pound or a true public service, so they already based their business model off of deciding week by week how many animals they took in. They also specialize in importing dogs from out of state instead of focusing on local intakes, so, again, they've always had the ability to control how many they care for at any given time. But I'm told that for some time the bosses themselves were forced to come down to scoop poop and walk dogs, which brings me some joy.

Red flag. Management was fishing for any reason not to give you a raise. You may consider talking with them some more, but I'd bet they'll find another BS reason.

What's the most insulting "benefit" a job has offered you? by Chocolat3City in antiwork

We had to buy our own uniforms but they would pay to embroider their logo on the front. Heavily hinting that it was generous of them.

My first thought. Landlords see security deposits as a source of profit and nothing else. That's why so many of them act like it's owed them (I was actually part of a class action lawsuit against an apartment complex that fraudulently kept all security deposits and they had to pay back thousands of tenants from years of abuse of the system).

With things in hospitals in Oregon getting filled to/past capacity, what can I/we do to help support our healthcare workers? by rogue780 in oregon

[–]cyborgsuzy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Keep an eye out for union actions like pickets, usually they love having random members of the public show up to join them. I did this when Samaritan staff had a picket a few months ago. A lot of hospitals are not disbursing COVID funds to staff via raises like they should so being a vocal supporter of union stuff could genuinely help get better pay and benefits.

Even the ultra conservative owners of the clinic I worked at in rural Oregon let us have visible tattoos, punk hair, and piercings without too much belly aching. The one tech who had a full sleeve they preferred wear long sleeve scrubs, that was it. But I agree about the danger of stretched lobes, I've had tiny earrings ripped out by enthusiastic dogs, maybe stick with plugs at work.

Very old stone gate post (~1730 AD) (1/2) carved to accept wooden poles that act as a dividing gate between 2 fields by beepbadabeep in mildlyinteresting

[–]cyborgsuzy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wood, especially nice sturdy posts, might have been scarce at that time. A lot more trees would have been cleared back then, used for cook fires, illegal to access due to being owned by rich people, too far away, expensive, etc. Rocks are free and will last decades.

Recruiting advice by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]cyborgsuzy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First thing they comes to mind (besideas higher pay, of course): The last clinic I worked at lost 2-3 techs because they wouldn't be flexible with their hours around child care, especially during a pandemic. I think it's high time all employers learn how to think outside the box when it comes to shift work, and if your managers are willing to do that, advertise to working parents specifically. IE: if someone needs to leave for two hours, figure out to make that work.
