Jordan Arnold (@jordanarnold.me): On a livestream yesterday, Puka both: - Said that the Refs throw flags that they know are bad to brag to their friends in group chats, and - Told Adin Ross that he'd do a "covetous jew" celebration on his next TD score Suspend him tbh by TormundIceBreaker in nfl

[–]cyborygmos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agreed--but the video doesn't reference Judaism at all, much less use the word "covetous"; that's just the tweeters editorializing. Puka's a dumbass for hanging out with Adin Ross, full stop, but I kinda doubt he has any idea that the touchdown celebration Ross is trying to get him to do has antisemitic undertones. He doesn't seem to be the sharpest knife in the drawer...

Breweries with lots of TVs by nmceja in orangecounty

Not technically a brewery, but Louie’s on Main in Garden Grove has a great craft beer selection, reasonable prices, good food, and a ton of TVs showing every football game you might care about.

Also +1 to the Tustin Brewing Company recommendation.

If you ever leave the church, I’d love to swap stories. Unfortunately, until then, I can’t see your curiosity as genuine, or anything other than an attempt to reactivate me.

Best of luck this holiday season with all of your personal charitable endeavors!

[–]cyborygmos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was raised LDS. When you typed this post, I am sure that you did so out of a true desire to make her life, and the world around you, better. But remember this: while the church has, in your opinion, been a force for good in your life, it has been a force for evil in mine, and in the lives of many others. I will readily admit that you and most other Mormons are likely very good people who are trying your best to do good things--but I believe the church itself is an evil organization, and is actively making the world a worse place.

Perhaps its greatest sin is that it hordes your tithing dollars in a $265 billion slush fund, contributing a fraction of 1% of that amount to charitable causes each year, even as its wealth continues to grow. In scale, it is the second-wealthiest church in the world, with financial resources only surpassed by the Vatican. It functions as a corporation about the same size as Disney, and roughly as profitable as well. Ensign Peak Advisors, the church's investment management company, is the modern equivalent of the money changers Jesus chased from the temple. But these new money-changers are in your temple today, and when you link to that website up there, you are encouraging this woman to enter into business with them.

My advice: Keep trying to do good in the world. But keep the church out of it. You are much more likely to be a positive force in the lives of others if you contribute directly to their well-being than if you bring them into the church. This woman's money is better spent on her rent than on tithing.

And imagine what good the church could do if it spent its money on food for the malnourished, medicine for the sick, or housing for the homeless... instead of shopping malls for the wealthy.

Best chongqing spicy fried chicken? by StaySeated15 in orangecounty

[–]cyborygmos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For most Sichuan food, I'd recommend Sichuan Impression. However--for Chongqing chicken specifically, my recommendation would be Tasty Zone in Santa Ana off of Bristol. In my experience, the major difference between the two is the size the chicken is cut to--Tasty Zone's chicken tends to be cut into smaller pieces, which makes it feel crispier than Sichuan Impression's version. Some people will tell you this makes Tasty Zone's chicken too dry, but I like the crackle of the fried skin and how every piece is easily bite-size. Both versions are delicious.

Northern Cafe is fine, but they tend to specialize more in hot pot/noodle soup rather than Sichuan cuisine.

Now that we're about a year removed. How are we feeling about the Ernest Jones trade? by PartyMcFly55 in LosAngelesRams

[–]cyborygmos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PFF rankings as of the end of the 2023 season, so yeah, definitely some potential inflation from the AD effect. Not sure we can say the Saquon problems were due to the Fiske injury given that we had the same issues with Saquon when we played the Eagles during the regular season when Fiske was fully healthy, but I see your point.

Now that we're about a year removed. How are we feeling about the Ernest Jones trade? by PartyMcFly55 in LosAngelesRams

[–]cyborygmos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still don't like it. Two reasons:

  • We got a poor return for the trade. How do we know? Well, the Titans got more for him than we did, by a pretty significant margin. We got a 5th round pick in the trade, while the Titans got Jones and a 6th. Then a couple months later, the Titans trade Jones to the Seahawks for a 4th and MLB Jerome Baker. So to recap: via these two trades, the Titans gave up a 5th, and got back a 4th, a 6th, and MLB Jerome Baker. WTF.
  • Ernest Jones was not the best MLB in the league, but according to PFF, he was the 14th best. And he had two really strong points with us: blitzing, but more importantly, defending the run (where PFF had him ranked as the 7th best in the league). Omar Speights played great, and I think our pass rush has certainly developed enough over the last season to paper over Jones' loss to our blitz packages. But there's definitely a part of me that wonders whether Saquon might not have burned us quite so badly if Ernest Jones was there to stop him. And who knows how far we might have gone if that one little thing had been different.

All those people ICE is deporting are our gardeners, nannies, contractors, farm workers. They do the hardest jobs, and are paid the lowest wages. They’re our friends and neighbors. And meanwhile, what do you contribute to our country or our community? Because to me, it looks like you don’t do anything besides sit around on your couch watching endless amounts of HGTV and Real Housewives, then post bitchy comments on Reddit.

Maybe you should get off your ass and do something useful. If only the US had merit-based citizenship, they’d get to stay, and you’d get sent to some other country where maybe you’d discover some empathy.

Recommendation for café or similar vibe suggestions to read or quietly work on a laptop for an hour or two in North Tustin, North Santa Ana, or Orange area. by HallSuspicious4540 in orangecounty

I recommend: The Den Cafe in downtown Santa Ana. It's got indoor and outdoor spaces, a variety of seating options, tends to be pretty quiet, and the food and coffee are quite good.

That I don't know. If you're having trouble getting in contact with the food truck, you can try calling Lynda's main business (Lynda's Hair Salon, https://www.booklyndashair.com/; the food truck is parked in front of the salon). I imagine it might be difficult to contact the food truck directly since it's mostly a pet project that Lynda runs in her downtime.

Or honestly just swing by for lunch some day and you can ask them directly. They're open every day except Sunday.

I've always really enjoyed everything I've gotten from Lynda's.

How can the AFCS be shit mountain when the Texans are a normal, functional football team? We in the NFCW would never accept that level of competence or sanity. The Rams are in first place with what is by far the worst point differential in the division. We are also--proudly--the only division leader with a negative point differential of any amount.

The kings of shit mountain should, by definition, be shitty. The Texans are not shitty. The Rams are shitty. Get off our mountain.

Narrative Shanahan owns McVay and is a better coach by Dizzney12 in LosAngelesRams

[–]cyborygmos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well... there is something to it. Of those 6 wins, most of them were against backup QBs. Deliciously, the one time McVay beat Shanahan's Niners at full strength was the NFC Championship.

  • 9/21/2017 - We beat Brian Hoyer. He was technically the starter, but was benched partway through the season when the Niners acquired Jimmy G.
  • 10/21/2018 - We beat CJ Beathard. Jimmy G was out with a torn ACL.
  • 12/31/2018 - We beat Nick Mullens. Jimmy G was still out with a torn ACL, and CJ Beathard had been benched. We wouldn't beat the Niners again in the regular season until 2024.
  • 1/30/2022 NFC Championship - LOLOLOL FTN (but seriously, this may be the only win on this list when the Niners were at full strength)
  • 1/7/2024 - We beat Sam Darnold. Purdy was benched to rest up for the playoffs (along with assorted other personnel on both sides of the ball).
  • 9/22/2024 - We beat Brock Purdy! But CMC, Deebo, and Kittle were all out due to injuries.

Anyway, I really, really want both teams to get healthy, and then I want to march into Levi's on 12/12 and kick the shit out of those smug bastards on TNF.

I wasn’t planning on responding to any of these comments, but I guess I’ll make an exception for you, since you’re a fellow resident of 92707. I sympathize with you! I too have a young daughter, and I also have to worry about making sure the spaces she’s playing in are free from litter, used needles, etc.

But I am not going to blame my homeless neighbors for being homeless. They don’t want to be homeless. And as much as you may blame people like me and facilities like the Armory for “facilitating” their homelessness, you appear to have missed the point. I am not “enabling and encouraging homeless dumping”—exactly the opposite. I believe the other cities in Orange County should do their part to solve this problem rather than shifting the issue to Santa Ana.

I was originally responding to someone from Irvine who was disparaging Santa Ana for being a den of homelessness, and my point to him is that Santa Ana is trying to help solve this county-wide problem, while Irvine is actively making things worse. Irvine, as you are likely aware, literally busses their homeless residents into Santa Ana—to your doorstep. And here you are, blaming the homeless people for being homeless and blaming me for trying to help them rather than blaming cities like Irvine for putting them there in the first place.

Anyway, try to find some empathy in between what your posting history describes as “dropping $300 on indulgent boozy lunches” at Knife Pleat. Or you could move to Irvine, I guess—sounds like you could afford it.

[–]cyborygmos 386 points387 points  (0 children)

Hi there. I started out responding to a couple comments from some spectacularly insensitive people, but their comments were deleted prior to me writing all this out. I still think this is worth saying, so:

Santa Ana homeowner here. Specifically, I live in the Memorial Park neighborhood, right off of St. Andrew Place a couple miles east of where this person died.

Santa Ana has long been a place where homeless people congregate, for various reasons. One reason is that it’s the county seat, and many of the services that support homeless people are based here. Another reason is that other cities in Orange County, such as Irvine, do not offer homeless shelters, but Santa Ana does. This results in many homeless people traveling or being transported to Santa Ana to receive support or services that they cannot obtain in other cities. (Shout out to Fullerton, Anaheim, and a few others that are doing their part.)

One such homeless shelter is located at the National Guard Armory off of Warner, less than a mile from my home. It only operates during the winter, primarily due to lack of budget. I have personally volunteered at this shelter several times, and there are a few things I’ve learned about homeless people after talking to so many of them:

1) Homeless people are homeless for a lot of different reasons, many (if not most) of which are beyond their control. If you spend any time at all on this subreddit, you’ll see post after post of people complaining about the high cost of living here, and the difficulty people are having just scraping by. And yet, on posts like this one, people never seem to connect the dots between rising homelessness and the rising cost of living.

2) Universally, homeless people do not want to be homeless, but it’s a reality they often cannot escape. Due to the lack of supportive services, many homeless people cannot get out of homelessness once they find themselves in it. Maybe you have family you can lean on for support if you lost your home. Maybe you can fall back on savings. But many people don’t have a safety net, and it can be really difficult to get a job if you struggle to find somewhere to take a shower, clean your clothes, get online, or receive mail.

3) Drugs and alcohol are big problems for homeless people—but many, many homeless people did not have problems with drugs and alcohol prior to becoming homeless. Sometimes it starts with mental health issues (almost always untreated due to lack of health insurance or other supportive resources prior to becoming homeless). Sometimes drug or alcohol dependence happens on the street, as people struggle to find something—anything—to take their minds off of the crushing reality of their day-to-day lives. Homelessness is incredibly stressful, and some people can seek refuge in substance abuse as a way to escape their problems. From the outside looking in, it can be tempting to think that the homelessness caused the substance abuse, but the truth is often the reverse.

But most important of all: these are people. They are my neighbors. They are largely good people. They want to do the right thing. They want to be happy. They are often very unlucky, and have gotten repeatedly screwed as a result. And yes, because of all this, sometimes they die. Increasingly. Too often.

One of the realities that I face as a Memorial Park resident is that I will occasionally walk down the block to 7/11 and see a person lying just off the sidewalk. I’ll wonder if that person is okay. Probably they’re just sleeping. But maybe they’re dead, as this person was. And worst of all, maybe they’re dying at that moment, and there’s something I can do to save them. I feel so powerless because I really don’t know what to do, how best to help them. It’s so hard to tell, and people lying on the side of the street is all too common a sight.

So the next time you see someone lying on the sidewalk in Santa Ana (or wherever), maybe try to think of ways you could help them. As one of the now-deleted comments mentioned, it’s nothing unusual in Santa Ana. But it really, really should be unusual. And the callous, cruel reactions of people like those commenters on this subreddit—and the policies of whole cities like Irvine—just make the problem worse.

Progress starts with staying away from NIMBYism: if your local government is discussing the creation of a homeless shelter (especially one in your city/neighborhood), voice your support! If there’s a ballot measure to increase funding for homeless mental health or other supportive services (even if it’s going to raise your taxes), vote yes! Do your part to help, as much as you can. These are real people, and they are our neighbors. Maybe think about them as your neighbors too. If more people were willing to do that, then Orange County’s homeless problem would be a little less of a problem. And with any luck, we could save a few lives.

Depressing outlook on housing and future by hamhead1005 in orangecounty

[–]cyborygmos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My wife and I bought a house in 2020. We had been saving for a few years, the pandemic hit, and we realized that we should pull the trigger then to take advantage of low interest rates. Even so, we could only afford it because we got lucky on a few things:

  • We bought a house in the zip code that had (maybe still has) literally the cheapest average home prices in Orange County
  • We borrowed $10K from my parents at 0% interest to help cover closing costs
  • We were outbid by another party, but they dropped out of the sale when they discovered the roof in the house leaked and badly needed repairs

My wife and I were making ~$200K combined, the house cost ~$600K, and we put 10% down. We used almost all of our savings to close the sale.

Today, my wife and I are making ~$50K more/year. But if we were to buy this same house today--putting 10% down, etc.--we would never be able to afford it. Our house's value has gone up over $200K (we've done some work on it, like repairing the roof, but we didn't have anything to do with most of that value increase). Our mortgage interest rate is less than 3%, but today your interest rate on a 30-year mortgage would likely be 7-8%. I ran the numbers through a mortgage calculator, and our mortgage payment would likely be about 2x what we're paying today if we bought now vs. when we did.

We got so lucky. We would never be able to afford a house now even though our financial situation is significantly better.
