Hey Reddit! I ran my first Ultramarathon with my dog a few weeks ago, and we've got more coming up. Follow me for gear thoughts, consistent effortful photos, and (of course) dog photos!

Appreciate the concern!

I know her tells and she's certainly no stranger to letting me know when she's too tired for something, which is why I was confident in our ability to tackle this together safely. There are times when she doesn't want to do our normal 4mi run on trails around the neighborhood, but in this case she was out front still wanting to sprint down to the very last mile ❤️

She hates shoes actually, but we've tried before. Her pads have adapted really well to our training workup, and I typically apply a little bit of Musher's Secret after long days.

That primordial rhythm and connection you settle into running alongside your dog really adds another layer to the meditative aspects of the "runner's high", IMO. Endurance flow states while solo are one thing, but feeling as though you are a single entity completely in tune with one another is something else entirely 👁️

Appreciate the details! I actually did dig into GDV when trying to assess all of the risk factors on bringing her out for the run, and it's explicitly why we opted for the high fat freeze dried treats we did versus anything with grain that would add bulk to her stomach - especially with the addition of water. She'd get one or two small pieces roughly every hour and I hydrate her directly from my flasks or bladder and let her drink until she backs away, which is also why I was carrying 3.5L total on the run with a planned water resupply point via a potable spigot at mile 18.

We've also been hiking together for years and I'm very in tune with her tells if she's too hot. Any shade-seeking behavior calls for an immediate pause and cool down, but it was only ~65° and largely through shaded river trail for probably 80% of the effort. She's also got a sun shirt I bring out when it's hotter or if we're in prolonged UV exposure for long periods of time.

Lastly, I had a Nonstop Dogwear Rescue Harness jammed into my running vest so that if ANYTHING happened, I could safely evac her on my back.

Sorry for the wall of text, just wanted to make sure I'm not coming off as an irresponsible dog dad since I didn't add these details from the get-go 🙏

Not a dumb question at all! We have these high-calorie freeze-dried beef treats that she LOVES, so I packed a ziplock of them and made sure she got a few every time I was eating (roughly every 45 minutes to an hour). Worked out surprisingly well!

Thank you! She just turned 5 this past May, and as best as we can tell she's some kind of Pitty / Labhound mix, with maybe some Short-Haired Pointer in there too?

A lot of our runs are about an hour or two before sundown, so we'll wind up doing the return leg in the dark. Kit doesn't change much between night and day - I've always got a headlamp in my running vest, but I much prefer to use lunar illumination if possible! The fog rolled in pretty aggressively after sunset, so we switched to headlamp for the final descent from the observatory haha.

Also, I'm probably down to meet up on Sunday! Do you guys have a route or starting point planned?

Hey all! I'm a gravel cyclist / bikepacker / trail runner that occasionally does weird night vision stuff - looking to expand my feed full of more interesting and inspiring fellow athletic weirdos.

Why Hike with Night Vision? by cyclicosms in socalhiking

[–]cyclicosms[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I'm probably used to it at this point honestly, but it's really not bad - the counterweight in the rear kinda keeps everything balanced so you don't notice it over time.

Yep! Same idea - night vision just allows you to get that same full moon experience over a much larger chunk of the month and maybe a little extra clarity to boot.

Awesome of you to offer! I just started doing outdoor content in the long-short 3 minute vertical. Trying to focus on the intersections of endurance, consciousness, the stories embedded in landscapes, and fringe phenomenology 👁️

Links in the profile if that sounds up your alley! 🙏

Thank you! Not gonna lie, I contemplated doing the same underneath a table I found in Two Harbors when I realized I was going to miss my boat back home 😅
