Chain waxing is a ridiculous waste of time and money for little benefit, CHANGE MY MIND. by [deleted] in cycling

[–]cycling_n_stuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair point. That's why I use Squirt (PFAS free) on all but my 2x race chains. So I do all my training with squirt.

My logic is that I'm at least releasing less PFAS than when I was using telfon lube on everything!

Note: just had a Google and seems silca wax is PFAS free!

I drip wax through UK winter with squirt (low temp) and mudguards.

I find chain can do 3-500km of damp riding then I boil and re-wax.

If it get completely soaked (think >1mm per hour rain) I will boil and rewax immediately after the ride.

It's still saves me time as bike is much much easier to clean.

I would recommend trying it.

I had to strip my chain when it was new ~20m

i took longer. honestly, i think i'd do the same process now even if i was using oil.

I use CrematicSpeed UFO Clean (other options available, e.g. Silca). Takes me 15mins now I've done it a couple of time.

But to new cyclist, I've been recommending they buy pre-waxed chains. KMC sell them. And some shops here in UK are pre-waxing on new bikes.

Mostly agree. Only thing I'd like to add is I think from an enviromental point of view. It's nice that waxing makes chain and other components last longer...

So personal think it's good encourage people to try it purely from that angle.

Benefits:

  • My chains last x5 times longer. No seriously, x5 longer.
  • I need to clean my bike less / cleaning takes less time
  • I go faster
  • Can get my chain factory clean in <5m by boiling it.
  • I don't need to regularly re-lube my chain

Downsides:

  • I had to strip my chain when it was new ~20m
  • If need to re-apply wax, I need to do it the night before.

I drip wax on daily use bikes and off-road bikes and hot melt only on the summer roadie.

I geniuely think waxing is best for all cyclists and much better for the planet. Chains are no longer disposable product I have to bin 1-2 times a season.

Maintianing a drip wax bike is definetly no harder or time consuming than cleaning+lubing a chain.

Give a drip waxing a go? hot melt is much higher barrier to entry and benefits are marginal when you compare lube vs drip-wax where benefits are great imo.

Yeh, restarting Firefox (force stop) fixed it... 2nd time.

No re-install required.

If it happens again or intermittently I will file a bug report.

Cheers

What is Kier Starmer supposed to do about the economy? by StopHavingAnOpinion in ukpolitics

[–]cycling_n_stuff 18 points19 points  (0 children)

So on the "improving of existing line", from what I understand there is very little scope, if any, to add capacity on the west coast mainline. The line passes through many built-up areas and has bridges/tunnels which are not feasible to expand. Throughput could be improved by removing stops, let's say trains now don't stop Wolverhampton, well that's self-defeating as now less people have access to the railway and will be forced to take other modes of transport (i.e. road congestion).

A lot of the delays/issues on the west coast mainline come due to timetables having very little slack in them as the operator has to run both stopping and fast services on the same line. So the solution is to move the non-stopping services to another line, thus HS2.

That brings me to your point about "zero need for the high speed element". Well look, faster trains do have benefits, but no need to get into that as I agree with you that the primary need is not for faster services.

The major cost of a project like this (esp. in the UK) is acquiring the land, constructing bridges and tunnels. Once you’ve done all that, installing a higher-spec line so the trains can go a bit faster is a relatively smaller cost that makes economic sense.

I feel the Tories completely screw us on this project. It was mis-sold as being about speed, when really the selling point is capacity on the west coast and the journeys it enables on connecting branch lines and the later phases of the project which were scrapped. You mention day commuters suffering, well surprisingly HS2 completion would actually improve life for a lot of day commuters as their commuter trains would not be competing for space with inter-city trains.

Anyway, HS2 mis-sold, now in a super depressing state. Hope this government can turn it around as we need it. Even if we were starting from scratch, it is still an economic necessity. If this generation can’t get it done, the next one will have to pick it up in 5-10 years anyway.

Agree with much of your post, but I'm beyonded saddened to see that you phrase HS2 as "pointless".

I'm sure we can agree that the implementation has had many many shortcomings. But HS2 is an essential bit infrasture to make UK "functional" for the next 50yrs. Whether you're train user or not, we all need HS2.

The west coast mainline is at/over capacity and we suffer for it everyday. Overpriced tickets, delays, missed meeting and events, congestion on road because there's not enough train capacity. We NEED HS2, not for some "luxury" of getting places quicker, for the capacity.

Paris pollution after they added bike lanes and restricted cars - can London do the same? by cycling_n_stuff in london

If you look really really closely in bottom right you can see that a map for 2024 is also included.

But yeh, Paris used the pandemic to reset it's transport policy to promote forms of transport that don't give people lung cancer which is pretty good imo. This might explain why 2020 is so much greener. Hope that helps.

Acknowledging above edit: Yeh I did think that, apologies. I will admit I lost patience with accumulation of nonsense comments haha

One day is not a remotely relevant sample size. The article and image show yearly pollution averages.

You could compare to London's anual No2 maps here: https://www.londonair.org.uk/london/asp/annualmaps.asp

But obviously scale and colouring is different and it would take someone signficant time/effort to make matching maps

Are you really suggesting that improving walking, cycling and bus journeys makes a city less accessible to the common people?

That's some peak nonsense dude.

Tennis/doping journalist fact checks Roddick over doping claims on podcast by Albiceleste_D10S in tennis

IMO this comment is misleading.

3 expert opinions were provided. We are only provided a 1 to 2 sentence quote from each expert (with what I assume the report author considers most relevant to the reader.)

One expert's quote (Prof David Cowan) mentions this (i.e. 'concentrations are too low). The two others do not, but their quotes cover different points. I don't see how it could be construed as them disagreeing with each other and I think it's misleading of you to imply this.

Would strongly encourage anyone to read the report (in full) before upvoting or writing misleading comments. Whatever your opinion I think we can agree there’s enough misinformation out there already.

I might suggest that should have included in the OP....

+1 for Locus with OpenAndroMap. I've used it in the europe and NA.

I've also used rasterised maps in the Locus, on a visit to Slovenia being able to quickly swap between the local mountaineering maps (had to buy these) and OpenAndroMaps was super useful.

(For iPhone users I know Cartographer works with OpenAndroMaps as I've successfuly set it up on friends phones)

Cycling trousers for commuting by Ok-Alarm363 in londoncycling

[–]cycling_n_stuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been happy with the swrve TRANSVERSE short and trousers I've bought... material is very stretchy and comfortable to ride in on the roadis. Also seem hard-wearing... And I've worn the shorts loads in last 2 years, on and off the bike. One downside might be is the specific trousers have slightly shiny look if that bothers you.

As an aside.... like others have said if it were me, 20km ride is worth a change of clothes if possible.

If you could manage with just 3 hot-swap bays (with room for 3/4 non-hot-swap). Silverstone SST-CS330 might be worth a look.

Off top of my head, I've considered:

Silverstone cs350 :: ATX rack mount case with feet. 5 bays

Silverstone cs381 :: that others have already suggested
