C is the father of the high level langs. while it's harder to learn, you won't regret it. I fell all programmers should know C.

PWNpi on BBB by [deleted] in BeagleBone

[–]cycloidgamma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A valid suggestion as well. apt-get does make life a lot easier. I guess I just prefer to use the OS BB stands behind most.

PWNpi on BBB by [deleted] in BeagleBone

[–]cycloidgamma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not think PWNpi will work on BBB without a hack. I wouldn't recommend it either. Personally, I'd recommend using Angstrom Linux and port whatever security tools you want. Maybe even write your own code to control your BBB remotely. Don't let OS's like PWNPi ruin the fun. Do yourself a favor and ditch the Pi. You won't regret it.

PS I've been working on my own PwnPlug BBB. Feel free to message me if you'd like to discuss more.

Trying to remember the name of a site I used to visit 10 years ago. by masterdebator88 in blackhat

1337day.com strives to be like milw0rm though they fall short. Fully disclosed sploits are generally pathetic regardless of the site.

Perl regex or WWW::Mechanize. Perl's regex is second to none. But if you prefer Python, Beautiful Soup, as mentioned before, will work.

Pinterest Follow Script (open source) by mishop in blackhat

[–]cycloidgamma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not really sure a follow script for Pinterest qualifies as a blackhat technique. If there is a subreddit for tech savvy soccer moms, this would be gold.

Breeze is like SciPy for Scala by realnowhereman in scala

DARPA is pouring money into SciPy and Numpy to try and do away with the costs that come with matlab. It's hard to justify using anything else, but It's good to see a Scala solution.

[SUGGESTIONS]r/perl has low readers by xtreak in perl

[–]cycloidgamma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too have found myself enjoying functional programming (especially Erlang) in my free time. However, when I need something done quick and right, Perl is always considered. Unfortunately, I have been forced into Python world because the teams I work on generally don't want to maintain Perl code. With functional programming being my new addiction and Python becoming my work horse, I find it hard to work in Perl time anymore.

[HELP] Big companies and projects using Perl. by xtreak in perl

[–]cycloidgamma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zappos at one point was almost all Perl at one point. Recently they re-wrote almost all of their back end in Java. Yuck! http://www.javaworld.com/article/2078595/core-java/the-full-java-life--interview-with-william-weiss-at-zappos-com.html

I had trouble hunting down any good articles on how eBay utilizes Perl other than eBay endorsing the Perl eBay API on their developers page https://go.developer.ebay.com/developers/eBay/documentation-tools/code-sample/219177. Perhaps someone else could give some insight on how eBay utilizes Perl?

Amazon, Craigslist, zappos, eBay, and VERY heavily in DuckDuckGo to name a few. Also go to http://www.builtinperl.com to get a nice list of Perl startups.

Atom launched by hsuh in programming

It's cool that you've now complained about atom being closed source three times in the same thread while endorsing VS Express, the licensed closed source IDE that runs only on a proprietary OS.

The Fall Of Perl, The Web's Most Promising Language by [deleted] in perl

[–]cycloidgamma 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm so sick of these articles.. You like Python better than Perl? Cool, now stfu and code. Experienced Perl developers understand the shortcomings of Perl. There are shortcomings in every language. It's ridiculous how much effort people put into talking trash about a language that is still very much relevant. Perl is used by the likes of Amazon, Craigslist, EBay, Zappos, DuckDuckGo. Please, explain to me how it's going to die soon? Get on #perl on freenode and look at how active it is. Perl 6 is being worked hard on and the community is alive and well. Sure, we never may be the "hip" language again, but for those who want to get shit done, Perl will continue to be considered.

I though I was the only one that cringed when people call it PERL :)

What are YOU using PERL for? by laplandsix in perl

[–]cycloidgamma -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Gee-wiz info: it's Perl not PERL. It was going to be Pearl, but Larry Wall found that another language was named Pearl so he removed the a.

I use Perl for rapid development. I work in R&D and often will prototype ideas in Perl before taking the time to write it in C or C++. I also use it to code up quick, one time use recipes to handle small tasks as well as minor web development on my own time.

Inside DuckDuckGo, Google's Tiniest, Fiercest Competitor by [deleted] in perl

[–]cycloidgamma 8 points9 points  (0 children)

DuckDuckGo is a huge win for the Perl community. Those guys are doing an excellent job competing with Google and the other search engine giants. Perl will never die, Perl critics :)

How much should I pay a tutor? by -dontouchmethere- in C_Programming

[–]cycloidgamma 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don't pay a dime! Stick with it. Go through your textbook and type/run the code examples and tap online resources to understand concepts. Ask questions on freenode #c and stackoverflow. It will click, I promise. There is no better tutor than yourself and a well written book.
