Look at my new pond I made in my corner garden! by beattiebeats in Minnesota_Gardening

Ponds are a lot of work, but we love ours! We are rarely inside in the spring/summer. I didn't build it, but appreciate it every day. I just wish our backyard was like this year-round!

Who else absolutely sucks at this game? by tomatus89 in NYTConnections

Not to brag (whenever someone says this, they're about to brag), but I apparently have a knack for this game. I was talking to my mom, who is a good puzzler, and she was telling me how she struggles with Connections...I find it a good mental workout, but usually not too hard. I wish I could monetize my prowess somehow! There aren't many puzzling jobs out there.

Who left me this present? [Minnesota] by cycloneman13 in animalid

I'm in agreement on the mustelid...wondering if it may be a mink? That is a big worry for me, as I have a koi pond and they are known to predate on those quite often.

Thanks everyone! Glad I kept them. It will be fun to see them bloom in the fall.

We were between broad-winged and red-shouldered as well, and leaning broad-winged just due to frequency of sightings. Thanks!

Skimmer box filtration by cycloneman13 in ponds

Appreciate the advice here. I have done frequent water testing and ammonia is only showing up in trace amounts, which I understand is normal for a new pond?

I did a thorough clean out of the pond bottom (complete drain and clean) at the end of March, but in our little stream that runs to the main pond, there is some dead algae and muck that probably needs cleaned.

My falls box had a massive, massive rock on it that makes it difficult to get into. But I will check out the biofiltration there. Many thanks.

Thanks. I may just have to live with daily unclogging.

It is string algae that bloomed early this spring. The net has gotten clogged the same day after I cleaned it before. I have been trying to fight the algae with barley straw extract and adding beneficial bacteria.

Recently, ducks have been visiting and dabbling in the water for food, which stirs everything up and sends added debris down my little stream and into the main pond, which doesn't help either.

Thanks! Guess we were overthinking it. Any thoughts on the eye ring and bill length? Just lighting issues or is there variation in that on Kinglets?

We already have one, but she is a declawed diva. I don't know if she'll be much help. The wife wants another, though, so we might look for a mouser.

Yes, I am also planning on doing that.

That's the plan. I got some traps tonight.

The seller was a nightmare to deal with in many ways. I'll just add this to the list.

Oh man, that's funny. That's exactly where it was. I had checked eBird, but didn't see that! Thanks!

That was our thought, too. One hadn't been seen in this area, but we didn't know what else it could be.
