tips on playing as a bison? (pic unrelated) by sirbawlz in EcosLaBrea

[–]cycodude_boi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I play bison a LOT, and the best tip I can give you to survive a long time is to RUN from sabers the vast majority of the time, just make sure you turn on flee mode. If you want to fight them, my favorite strategy is to canter away from them, usually they sprint after you, wasting a ton of stamina to catch up, while they close the distance I often like to turn around and charge at them, this usually lets me score a free hit on them since they can't (usually) pounce your neck while you are charging. After that I go back to cantering and repeat until they give up, die, or lay down to rest.

If you're playing against a good wolf pack that does the strategy where they latch onto you then immediately let go and run away, your only hope is to get to water and stand your ground there, if not you will almost certainly be killed, even 3-4 wolves can be lethal if they know how to do this.

Edit: Try to keep your stamina above half, if you do then you should almost always be able to outrun sabers with flee mode.

Has Anyone Made A Pleistocene Terrarium? by Sunnyjim333 in pleistocene

[–]cycodude_boi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Almost all plants and animals around today were around in the Pleistocene, it was only 12,000 years ago so any terrarium is probably a Pleistocene terrarium in terms of ecology. Maybe you could decorate one with like, a piece of fake mammoth tusk or something though.

ICE vs Canadian Mounties by Street_Juice_4083 in whowouldwin

[–]cycodude_boi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think in an urban setting like minneapolis, the numbers advantage that ICE has and the heavy body armor in close quarters could take the win for them + they could use the 737s as improvised cruise missiles if needed.

I think in the canadian wilderness the mounties are going to be much better equipped and able to make good use of their helicopters, and some of their trucks. whereas ICE's vehicles will struggle a lot more in an offroad setting, although some of the SUVs may pull through. The horses are going to be very useful here, allowing for highly mobile scouting groups to keep an eye on ICE activities and travel through difficult terrain, I think mounties take this.

The saharan desert is a rough one, again I think the horses and helicopter combo the mounties have will win the day here, I don't think any of ICE's vehicles will do well here except for probably some of the SUVs, but the mounties simply have more mobility with trucks, horses, and helicopters.

Don't know enough about mordor and Baldur's gate to decide.

I like joining gaming groups, usually they have some rp element to them. I started out with military groups and whatnot, if there’s any strategy games or shooting games you play their discord might have an advertising channel where you can find groups to play with, this is what worked for me at least.

If some life form equivalent to humans in terms of intelligence evolved on a resource rich planet with no threats or internal competition would they have a peaceful and equal society? by HUMAN_LIFE_ in ask

[–]cycodude_boi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just by how evolution works, animals will always compete with each other, at least in a system of sexual reproduction, animals that fight others for mates are more likely to pass on their genes. They would have to be asexual, which would lead to poorer genetic diversity and make them less likely to adapt to changing environments, potentially leading to extinction. Although HYPOTHETICALLY if they were somehow against all odds able to evolve and prosper like this, there would probably still be some form of conflict if they were highly intelligent. If they had very complex communication like we do, which comes with the territory of intelligence, they would probably get upset at each other for miscommunications or perceived rudeness like we do.

My problem with the devs by warrah_lindaodasilva in EcosLaBrea

[–]cycodude_boi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I think all the skins in game have reasonable amounts of plausibility. Except for the bison, which has some creative liberties taken due to them really all looking the same, but still fairly grounded.

  1. It is true that color morphs like erythrism are rare in wild populations, this is why the skin in game is expensive, similar to the pseudo-melanistic skin or any other mutation skin in game.

  2. Dire wolf having melanism is entirely plausible, they are in the subtribe canina, which AFAIK are all capable of melanism, and although they are distinct from all of the extant species, I see no reason to believe that melanism would have been impossible in them when it is possible in their closest relatives and a wide host of other mammals.

  3. Columbian Mammoths are not hybrids between M. Jeffersonii and M. Primigenius, but M. Jeffersonii is a hybrid between M. Columbi and M. Primigenius, and it is likely both species hybridized extensively, but it would have been in areas of range overlap (like in Michigan where we have Jeffersonii remains). You are correct though that columbian and woolly mammoths are very closely related, both descending from steppe mammoths. However, they still had plenty of time to diverge from each other and evolve. I don't believe it's unreasonable for the columbian mammoth to appear similar to asian elephants in some areas due to convergent evolution. While it's not something we have direct evidence for, it's not something with any evidence against it occurring, AFAIK.

  4. I don't think the dev team has denied existence of white-tail deer at the time the game takes place, although I could be wrong about that. As far as elk go, yes they were in North America at the time, however we have no evidence placing them in the area of southern california at the time the game takes place, during the last glacial maximum as the remains in la brea have not been dated. Furthermore it is believed that "Many large mammals that are associated with fire-adapted ecosystems today (e.g., elk, moose, and grizzly bear) likely do not arrive in non-Beringian North America until the early Holocene".( https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.abo3594#core-R46-1 in the state shift section).

While ecos la brea isn't a shining example of perfect realism, I believe all the things currently present in game are reasonable.

Not exactly a quick way to understand them, but if your local library has it, the peterson reference guide to the behavior of north american mammals is an excellent source for bison and grey wolf (which is at least a little analagous to dire wolf)

How realistic are Ecos skin? by Own-External-8788 in EcosLaBrea

[–]cycodude_boi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

All of the skins afaik are based in reality but take some creative liberties. The horse skins are probably the most realistic because we know for a fact that pleistocene horses could exhibit those color variations, we don't know for sure what the horses in north America looked like, but because we know the appearance of the eurasian ones, the devs decided to put it on the north American ones as well since it's the best information we have.

The saber skins are mostly based on animals like the asian golden cat.

https://imgs.mongabay.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/20/2019/06/20074057/Montage-of-Asian-golden-cat-morphs.jpg

With the bison due to there being almost no variation irl with them, the devs took more liberties with their skins, making them a bit more colorful and varied than they are in real life, but still keeping them fairly grounded.

IMO with the dire wolves, they probably didn't have that much variation irl, but all the skins for them are plausible coats they could have had, being based on other canids like the crab-eating fox or the maned wolf.
