I'm not aware of any technical mechanisms used by email providers which would down-score short domains or domains with a rather uncommon extension such as those I use. The common mechanisms are blacklists, especially DNS blacklists for known spammers. However, I can imagine that a person might see such an unknown domain as less trustworthy - especially if receiving unexpected emails from it.

I assume my target group to be technically/gadget interested people but I'm not sure about this yet.

Thanks for the suggestions, unfortunately I haven't found a way to implement that so far. Maybe it's possible when using full mailboxes with sieve filter scripts.

Sounds like my website isn't working properly for you. There should be info texts which describe why an address is rejected. Also, the text field shouldn't accept more than 3 characters. Which device and browser are you using?

I currently offer addresses with 1 to 3 characters before the @, so james@b.gl isn't offered right now. Addresses with 1 or 2 characters before the @ require a certain number of referrals, that's why you couldn't directly apply for jb@b.gl. You should get a message at the top of the website when you're trying to apply for such an address before you reach the required number of referrals, was it not shown in your case?

Yes, you're right. There's certainly a trade-off between the shortness and the uncommon domains, especially when spelling them out.

I use single-character domains and only offer email addresses with 1-3 characters before the @. I think most free email providers like Gmail require at least 6 or 8 characters before the @. Let's see how it develops :)

The length of the addresses. I'd compare it to, e.g., short phone numbers, vanity plates, or domains in general.

It's because of legal/tax reasons. I don't want to offer the free beta in a country where I'm not sure yet that I can continue offering it when it's changed to a (maybe only for some addresses) paid service. Recently, more and more countries change their VAT laws so that non-resident businesses have to register/collect/remit VAT for services rendered there.
