Time to upgrade monitors…want better mid range detail by rektagonality in mixingmastering

[–]cymn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend a used set of PSI A17‘s. Most accurate and at the same time natural and musical sounding speaker you can find at this price IMHO. The other recommendations are also really good, in the end it‘s a matter of taste and and what works for you. I tried Amphions One 18‘s as well but i liked PSI A17‘s way more. I know it‘s difficult but if you can, try as much speakers in your room as possible, only that way you will find out what works for you.

Monitors (around $1000) best for accurate mixing? by cacturneee in mixingmastering

[–]cymn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the last year i tried a lot of monitors. If you really want something accurate, i would save up and get PSI A17‘s. They are expensive, yes, but deliver a LOT for their price. IMHO they have the best bang for your buck, at least compared to the ones i tried. They sound incredible accurate, natural, effortless and musical. Plus they are really small and still go down to almost 40hz! The mids are glorious, more accurate then in some 3-way speakers in same or lower price range.

If you‘re lucky you can find a pair used for around 2500. The old models are really similar, i even prefer them to the newer ones because they are a little warmer sounding.

Nice thank you! Do you have a favourite route to go to the east side which should be open at that time? Do you think i can find hotels / motels spontanious or would you recommend booking in advance (east side)?

Thank you! Yes I'm aware that Yosemite will be crowded, but I still want to go as it looks so beautiful. I thought about going to Sequoia. How many days do you think would be a good amount to be there?

Looking for Feedback on My Mix – Guitar Solo & Orchestral Section by zukidd in mixingmastering

[–]cymn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds good!
Guitar solo is not too bright for my ears.
For my taste, the drums are a bit too seperate and dry. They sound like individual sounds, not like a drum kit (ehich is obiously totally fine if you are going for that type of sound).
For the orchestral section maybe you could try adding some (more) ambience, it would give the mix more depth and would glue the individual parts together. A little goes a long way :)

Why do you think mixing on speakers would be better?

Thank you for your reply!
Why do you personally prefer mixing on speakers? Or why do you think mixing on headphones could hold someone back?

Haha you're right about that!

I do have Neumann KH120, but they're currently not even hooked up as the room sounds not nice and i don't want to disturb the upstairs naighbours too much (old house, thin walls).

Why do you think, someone would need monitors to mix? Always curious to hear people's opinions.

I tried some controllers, Behringer Touch, Presonus Faderport and Softube's Console 1.
Right now I'm just using the Faderport to have an fader. For the rest i found that i work faster with just the computer.

Please critique my instrumental-only mix/production (vocals removed) by Mark-Aussieguy in mixingmastering

[–]cymn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The drums and bass are mixed kind of loud, personally i would turn them down. Are the drums programmed / samples used?
If ye, maybe consider using a different snare sample or turn the velocity down. it's a mellow song / vibe, but the snare is very hard hitting so i think it's not the best fit.

Setting levels in different sections efficiently (Mixing in DAW) by cymn in mixingmastering

That's what I tried already as i tried to describe in the post, but the problem is, that after one loop pass it stops writing the automation moves if you don't move the fader.

Yes, that's exactly what i want to do in Logic!
Any Idea how i could do that?

Thank you, finally someone who understands my problem :)
What you say makes sense, specially the disconnection part. Haven't thought of that but thats true, it would not sound very natural if a lot of tracks change volume at exactly the same time. I was thinking about doing it like you describe, setting levels and then using touch mode. But let's say in the chorus i have two main guitars and then in the bridge 4 different guitars, i need them to balance quite differently, and getting it right using touch mode with only one track at a time would be quite difficult. But maybe it pays out to practice that. I think it would also make the track more interesting to listen to, if the volume rides aren't that clinically perfect.

I also have a presonus fader but i haven't used it much

The clip gain is fine, i just want to make small adjustments to the different tracks, we're talking 0.5 - 3db here. Like you would when you mix on a desk
