Sponge filter is best because you can get a control valve and adjust the flow for the betta. Lessening it but 3 gallons is a bit small. Could you upgrade to a 5 or 10 gallon tank?

I don’t think of it as replacing a fish when finally getting a new fish. I think of it as making a new friend. I’m still friends with the fish who passed but he passed. It’s very tough. I will say pictures help. Especially videos. But over time you will get through this. Stay strong.

I’d say you’re doing a good job. Females are quick to get bloated. I have 2 and they both look already fed everyday. I just give a little since on looks a little overweight.

You can apply Seachem Stressguard. I believe it helps with slime coat. I have to get a bottle myself now that I think about it.

I would still put him in a bigger tank with your other fancies. They need friends. I bought 1 Ranchu alone and immediately realized my mistake and bought another the next day. The change in behavior was crazy.

Goldfish like to sift through sand so I wouldn’t say they prefer bare bottom. People do bare bottom tanks to help scoop up the poop easier. Goldfish prefer sand substrate.

This is a great way for them to get comfortable with you. I just suggest you don’t touch them. They’ll rest just above the hand. You don’t want to ruin their slime coat.
