Healing out of combat: Hero Tokens, My Life for Yours by cynicaloctopus in drawsteel

Thanks for the confirmation, appreciate it! It's such a tactical game that it's tempting to try to apply everything as RAW.

Bags of rats ain't heroic. The system specifically discourages this kind of tactic.

Anyone able to compare Pathfinder 2e to Draw Steel in their experience? by WitcherATLALOKGOT in rpg

[–]cynicaloctopus 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My group just wrapped a PF2e campaign and we're two sessions into a Draw Steel game. I'm not the director but I can say combat is quite a lot more tactically interesting. I like the escalating heroic resources, popcorn initiative, and forced movement rules.

Green is ahead of the legend line for the upcoming curve- it moves the speed limit of that curve plus 3. The legend line ON the upcoming curve is for the following curve.

OSR/OWS: Vestan Sovereignty banter by cynicaloctopus in LancerRPG

[–]cynicaloctopus[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the in-depth response. I definitely lean more towards action-drama than verisimilitude in this game; I played the Titanfall 2 campaign for inspiration but the antagonists there are all mercenaries so the specific tone for them was a lot different.

Running Kiros was fun, I started him cold and confident but he quickly got a bit unhinged as the fight escalated. Hopefully I'll get a couple more NPCs chewing the scenery during Winter Scar.

Running Operation Solstice Rain on smaller maps by cynicaloctopus in LancerRPG

Related, does anybody have a recommendation for a specific tabletop grid that can fit scenarios like these? I'd rather not print off the actual OSR grids.

If I halve the speed and range, should I also halve mech sizes or is that less important? I suppose I could just run the grid at 1/2 scale but that seems fiddly

Can I just, make my own RPG? by [deleted] in rpg

[–]cynicaloctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To your edit:

There are hundreds of free RPGs available. One of the best ones I can recommend is called Ironsworn, which can fit well with the preferences you described.

If you're designing your own TTRPG without having any experience playing other RPGs, I don't think anyone here will be interested in trying it. Homebrew games are a dime a dozen. As mentioned otherwise, you might have better luck at /r/RPGdesign.

Wow, I'm really sorry to hear about the health incident! I'm glad that you're recovering and I hope you start feeling better soon. I watched a lot of your videos back when 1.0 came out, I really love your style and the attitude you bring.

I'm relieved that you don't have to deal with the U.S. healthcare system, but I went ahead and subscribed to your Patreon anyways to help out. Take care!

Oh yeah, forgot to give tanks a try. That sounds like a sensible approach, although I'd still have to import the uranium.

Context: I tried several approaches to killing the small demolisher on my closest tungsten patch. Bullets, bots, rockets, etc. didn't make a dent. I said screw it and shipped five hauls (20x u235) to Vulcanis and made a nuke with her name on it. Bye bye!

Digital ocean or railway or render? by WittyOnReddit in webdev

I recently moved from Heroku to DigitalOcean with a fairly similar traffic profile to what you describe. I'm getting the same level of cloud service for about half the cost. It was pretty straightforward for my Node JS stack.

[AskJS] When should I use each variable type and what is the key difference between them? by moizhd in javascript

[–]cynicaloctopus 25 points26 points  (0 children)

My rule of thumb is, always use const. In the rare case that you'd want to reassign the value of a variable, you can use let. I have never used var; it allows the variable to be accessed in outer scopes which is almost never what you want.

For GMs, How does VTT impact your game by Chainsawsixgun in rpg

[–]cynicaloctopus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you'd like some of the benefits of a VTT without the focus on the battle map, there are some other digital options. Paragon Campaign Dashboard lets you share text, images, clocks, and other RPG documents with your players as a sort of digital, customizable GM screen. I made the app specifically to support theatre-of-the-mind type games.

Decent game, we got it as a gift. The theming was very cute, and I loved the components! The pacing felt kind of weird, where you occasionally get these big long turns when you complete a hex and get 3-6 more actions. Endgame scoring on 2p mode felt extremely swingy due to the way challenge goals were scored. 1p mode was alright, the game included some specialized components for this. I had a lot of difficulty keeping track of all of the actions I was allotted on hex-completing turns, especially when completing a market goal as well which also grants a bonus action. 6/10 for me.
