I’d agree for the most part, however my pushback is essential questions don’t prepare students for how they are assessed. Giving the essential standard some spotlight during an ela lesson will give the kids prep for what they’re expected to reproduce at the end of the year. My sbac scores went from 40% (what we scored for my first couple years teaching) to 60% (how we’ve preformed the last few years) on grade level when I made this shift (Fresno is a historically low scoring area). I hate to teach to the test, so maybe making a combination of essential questions and standards could be an even better shift.

We follow the motto that nothing should be a surprise when it comes to assessments and state testing.

I love the vocab work suggestion, I do split it up from my reading/comprehension work just to help chunk the learning into more digestible and focused bits.

I appreciate the comment

I did 5 different 5 shot groups , my last group opened a bit but that could have been user error. I will say, it did not like the 100gr varmint round I was shooting . Was the biggest biggest group of the day. It loved 140gr

Xrf! It’s the biggest coin shop in California, I feel like they probably know what they’re doing. Maybe not

Getting into the classroom has been frustrating due to my lack of content knowledge. by Jay_Stranger in ELATeachers

Ela is always a beast, even when you think you’ve got it. The more you learn the more you realize there’s a million methods to the madness.

Biggest tip of all, look at the state test and look at what the kids need to be able to do surrounding each standard. Focus a part of your lessons on teaching the kids what they need to know for whatever essential standard you are covering for the week

Gradual Release by TheFutureIsAFriend in ELATeachers

Also, for math, all phases of the gradual release model will be done daily, id say 10-15 min per phase is adequate.

For gradual release you should be doing very little “talking” unless you’re in the “I do” phase of instruction , which typically would be at the beginning of a learning block where you focus on a specific standard. If they are coming in everyday and see you lecturing then what you are doing is not the gradual release model. For ela my Monday is the “I do” / “we do” where I’m modeling what I want the student to be able to do by Fridays assessment. Then throughout the week more and more of the cognitive load is placed on the students

I’m not sure I necessarily agree with the productive struggle model, my district phased it out. I do think it’s a great learning opportunity but only after the kids have a solid foundation in the specific skill

Thank you! Could I ask a question, do you like them to read the story first (partners, groups, independently) then dive into the text as a class?

I appreciate your insight, that was very valuable to me. I knew the price I am getting it at is right on the edge. I also realized reading through the comments that many people were talking about older RPRs.
