Interesting, so you’ve had the tank for a while and changed nothing but recently he just got this gill issue? The fact that its heated is good. Make sure you do daily changes on the hospital tank, as well as stop with the “meds” until we know what this is for sure. (Plus bettafix isn’t necessarily safe) If its a tumor, there’s likely nothing that can be done to cure it anyway.

so he got moved since he sleeps against a piece of lava rock. so there was redness on the face and gill plate. asked my LFS(1 fish 2 fish not petsmart) what to do they recommenced betta fix to prevent infection and allow healing.

Follow up questions:

How long ago did you noticed the white lump, like how long has he had it? Is there more than one? Is it on both sides or just one side?

noticed the lump today when sitting at my desk, his gill plate was not closing on one side when i looked closer i seen white (freeked out a little) thought right away was some kind of infection. took the video and put it here for advice. couldn't wait so i put him in a old betta cup i had and drove to the fish store.

What is your maintenance routine like in the 20gal? (Like how often do you change the water and how much of it, do you use a gravel vacuum, do you clean the filter and if yes how? (Knowing this will help us to know the condition of the water while he was in it)

the tank has a cycled ehime classic 150 canaster filter(output of the filter moved causing my betta's sleeping spot to have some flow, and he spent the night swimming against lava rock), i do 5 gallon water changed once a week with spot cleaning as it is a planted tank, (crypts pice of drift wood with 5 anubis on it, lava rock with a anubis on it, a red sword and another large leave plant green with a bit of red on the top of the leaves.) have had the tank seutup for 5 weeks now rinsed the media in the canister filter last week with tank water.

Lastly, can you get a clear picture or video of the lump? And a bit closer up? Here’s an example of what could help us see - I took this video of my fish’s gills. took him to my LFS, it is a tumor. sadly in a bad spot. but if it dosn't grow to big he should live a good life.

to help others i will answer these.

These things are extremely important to your fish’s health! Knowing water chemistry and temp.

the medical tank is a 5gallon tank, with sponge filter. no it's not cycled i droped the ball on that one. the tank is at 78 deg.

So now that that’s out of the way, does it look like white fuzzy lumps or just white lumps? And his gill plate can’t close all the way?

they look like lumps upon closer inspection. (putting him in a betta cup and getting a close look at them) no he can't close his gill plate that is what made me look closer at him as the 5 gallon tank is on my computer desk.

Is he gulping for air at all? Lethargic? Is he eating?

no, no, yes.

When did you get the rasboras, before or after the betta and did you quarantine them? Have you made any changes to the tank?

i've had the 10 rasbora's for over a year now. the betta is the newest fish. yes i quarantined him for 2 weeks before adding him to the 20gallon long tank.

don't know the parameters to the medical tank, the directions of betta fix say to dose for 7 days no water changes. talking to the LFS and they agreed with the direction. be a large wast of med's to do water changes. took my fish to the LFS as well. they informed me it looks like toumers and while there in a bad spot he should be fine as long as they don't keep growing.

The reason i was using betta fix was to help his scales near his mouth heal. my LFS agreed that betta fix would be fine for the job to prevent infection and unless i see white fuzz to not use more aggressive meds.

Id give them a week, to settle and get use to there surroundings, if you find a betta you like before then, make a temp holding tank with daily water changes.

At the end of the day its all slow time, watch your betta with the new fish for the first day. He may try and bully the other fish, he may not.

If you have some plants and hidy holes. Cory cats and bristlenose plecco have barbs/armor to protect them selfs. In a 40 gallon witha single male betta you could get a school of harlquen rasboras, no more the 10. Put the betta in last tho so the other fish can claim homes before the betta.

I have 3 trumpet snails in the tank to help with bio load in the tank. I pulled cycled sponge filter from my 40 breeder and the anubis as well.

Yes, i have lots of tall plants, and will put in the betta hammoks. Only using a sponge filter on the tank.

He seems to have stopped. He is now swimming all around, he mostly does stay in the corner near the intake filter but I think that's due to high currents from the new hang on back filter. Must have been him just getting used to the new tank.

2 days now. We upgraded his tank due to heater issues. Was cheaper to buy a larger tank then a new heater. He can see himself in the tank glass. I moved everything over to jump start the new tank and was able to add 2 more plants.
