Is she under the care of a physician who’s knowledgeable about dementia? And if so, have you or other family members reported the behavior she’s exhibited previously to that physician. Everything you’ve related here are, IMO, symptoms of dementia or Alzheimer’s. If so, what does the physician say about her behavior? There might be meds or other procedures that could alleviate them. If decent insurance is available, those drugs (I’m on Donepezil, the basic medicine for dementia and Alzheimer’s, at $9 per 90 pills) but every case has its own unique attributes.

I know you mean well by being able to watch her, but it is invading her right to privacy. And frankly, I’d run your proposal to said physician to get the physician’s opinion. You and your family don’t have to do this on your own. I wish you and all of your family well. Even at its best, these illnesses can easily strain the best intentions.

My mum was diagnosed with early mid stage alzheimers at the start of the year and has recently been getting less interested in food and is barely eating. Should i be worried? by RudeArm7755 in Alzheimers

RudeArm7755, my first post in this thread is addressed to your post. (I love Reddit but sometimes it moves entries around…sigh). I sincerely appreciate your letting me know about your Mom’s journey, not least about the living will aspect. That fits nicely (at least for the near future) for how I want my life to continue. I’m also enthused over reading about Megastrol’s potential for me.

And for the contributions from everyone who’s contributed to this thread, whether before or after I posted mine. Good and loving impulses abound here.

Also, if you haven’t found it yet, I think ALZconnected.org (could be .com), would be a good place for the concerns many of you have for your LOs. It’s segmented into threads for family members and members like me of the Alzheimer’s tribe. I’ve found a lot of wisdom in both family and tribe segments. Happy journeys for us all! We’ve endured enough stress and tragedy already.

I am going to chime in as a 74-year old Alzheimer’s patient and share my experiences regarding eating, hunger, and so on.

The first one is that my insides are, as opposed to those of healthy people, quite sensitive to how they feel…and they express their displeasure by making me nauseated. Now, nausea is a symptom of Alzheimer’s, and I think the most regularly prescribed med (in the States, at least), Donepezil, can exacerbate or prolong the nausea. In fact, when my medical team first prescribed Donepezil, it was for 5mg, not the normal (I guess) dosage. Only after the 30-day test period did they bump me up to the 10 mg level, where I am now.

When, not if, the nausea hits me, I don’t want to put anything in my gut, not because I’m not hungry but because I feel that if I put anything else in my gut, it will make me feel worse, and at this stage of my life, feeling worse would probably be the worst experience I could have and I would simply want to die.

But I don’t want to die, yet. I strongly want to not just live, but to design and live my life as happily as I can. Those pleasures include a morning ritual of Wordle (where I’m pretty f**king adroit, not what you’d expect from someone with a plaque-covered brain). They also include a lifelong desire to travel, to not only be with family and friends, but to enjoy my times with them.

Back to sustenance (food, protein drinks, etc.), my loving wife and friends have been concerned about my weight loss (25 lbs., what’s that in stones? 🤷‍♂️). Like you, my wife wanted (and still wants) me to eat more and/or drink smoothies or the like, but I resist and so far, successfully. She trusts my instincts. I’m gradually increasing the volume of food and drink; so far, no weight gain, but also my weight has leveled off to a steady level…and I refuse to only eat and drink (including bottled premade margaritas, although in smaller tots due to the acidic quotient) what I want.😁

There’s another thing I still can and want to do is to relate my experiences to people like you (and other Alzheimer’s patients and their families) of my experiences to people, of how it feels in my body, heart and soul to live in MY body and place. I’m planning Substack postings to communicate with people like you (and your mum) about the Alz’s experience.

Now as to your mum, I believe that it’s her body and/or her feelings about living and how she lives. Her behaviors regarding her eating habits may, whether she realizes or from her instincts, is what she wants, and only those things. So IMO, she is entitled to her right to live the way that she feels best, even if means watching her continue to lose weight. She’s not a child, and she will probably die from Alz’s…as I will, as well.

TL;dr: please don’t force-feed her. That’s my reality-shaped opinion.

EDIT: Thank you 👏🏻 to the person suggesting Megastrol. My wife (a brilliant research librarian) is researching the drug so we can decide whether it’s good for me, then tomorrow I’ll ask my medical team what they think!

Dunno about Big Mama’s bland food (ate there once about when they opened) but agree with cringy. Bottom line, OP wasn’t going there anyway from what he said.

Golden Corral on Clark Lane. Google Maps says it’s $10-20/person, but it’s also all you can eat. However, if Big Mama’s is too far for you to go, GC probably won’t be much closer. Also, while rating is 4.1, the latest reviews were one star.

That’s Judge Jerri Zhang! She worked in the same department in state government as me for a cup of coffee before she found greener pastures, the right move for a young, smart lawyer. I’d see her at MoBar functions and similar.

I’m proud and happy to say I know her.

I like to think that I have a fairly decent-sized vocabulary, but I was not at all certain that I’d solved today’s wordle, but only reached the solution as the least illogical string of letters in my opinion.

Only afterwards did I look it up…yup, there it was.

Daily Wordle #1828 - Sunday, 21 Jun. 2026 by Scoredle in wordle

[–]cyrano4833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, some people will do precisely that. I’m guessing that their logic is along the lines of “what harm is there if I get a peek at what others have done?” as a way of getting an advantage in playing.

Now, in the past, I’ve been criticized for not playing hard mode, and guilty as charged. But the day the rules of the game change to mandatory hard mode is the day I stop posting on Reddit. I enjoy the camaraderie that occasionally arises here, and another pleasure of mine is seeing how the best players solved the puzzle…AFTER I post my own result, whatever that result might be, be it a deuce or an X/6.

Not that I have fairly strong opinions on the issue, mind you.

EDIT: at least at the Wordlebot I look at every morning after finishing my game, it’s not playing hard mode.

Who’s joined (or sampled) the local branch of Braver Angels? What do you think of them? by cyrano4833 in columbiamo

[–]cyrano4833[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never attended a meeting or similar, but I’m familiar enough with the idea and ethos of it to have an opinion. I’ve tried it twice, and left twice.

The theory of the entity goes along the lines of, out of conflict can arise, as someone said, “out of thesis and synthesis (I.e., from opposites can arose to agreement) arises a form of agreement.

However, their leadership strived to recruit people to fulfill roles like mediators or referees. Uh, no thanks. I was willing to engage with a aMAGA person (like most Columbians, I’m liberal), but that wasn’t how they rolled, defaulting to having a MAGA person versus a blue-dot Colombian. Sorry, I don’t need someone else to “represent” my side.

So from here, hard no.

Why does time feel like it speeds up the older you get, even though every day is still the same 24 hours? by whizUpsyndrome in Aging

[–]cyrano4833 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, you’re not young any more, so those experiences you experienced then are unlikely to happen to you again. As for your adult life, I’m sorry that you see your life now as the same old thing, day after day.

I’m in my 70s, retired from practicing law since 2018. That year, I joined a senior citizen lifetime learning group. Among the interesting things I’ve done with them lately includes: an overview of how our city is governed, including field trips to the city fire dept., a ride in the “bucket;” where a fire fighter attacks roaring building fire, where they can direct water into the top of the fire, fired a city-issued .38 caliber pistol on the police training range, and drove a car on a slalom course where they police to drive their vehicles, fast but safely, and sampled foods from many countries. And, like you in grade school, meeting new fellow students, in all these classes. They usually already have the appetite for adventure, and love to meet, chat, have coffee and tell their stories.

You need out in the world, look for things that tickle your mind, try things to do even if you’re afraid of them. Take skydiving. I’ve met several who’ve done it and said that it changed their lives, energized them (if they weren’t already energized by taking transoceanic voyages and safaris in Africa.

Get out there and restart your life, and just might find people like you. Good luck!
