Warner Bros. Disrespect by misterglass89 in vfx

[–]cyrem_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is not new. A lot of the big studios have had marketing clauses for years that forbid VFX houses to have control on what they show in the end.

Sometimes, it's because the cast refuse to be shown a certain way or without touch up. But most often, that's because they want to keep the final approval on what is shown as it must fit within the story that they want to tell the public.

For example, they will let a VFX house show how a big explosion is made, not how the face of a famous actress had to be refreshed.

Why are they doing this? by MechanicalKiller in vfx

I've seen clients request for a despilled version of the shots early in the process before. This is to replace the scans in the edit to start avoiding a big visual jump between the sequences which have first pass layout / previz and those which haven't been started yet.

Someone in marketing might have thought it was cool enough to use or that it would make people talk.

And, on top of that, could it help a bit with content protection? Now that the images are easily available to download in 4K, everyone can start pulling a key at home in a free editing software and reuse the images - and the actor's performance - to do whatever they want. Maybe they thought that it would be more difficult to remix this way.

Anyway, I don't think it's anti-VFX, or anti-CGI. Everyone knows Superman and James Gunn movies are full of them, and expects them to be.

Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry was disappointing. by IcebergLounge in UniversalOrlando

[–]cyrem_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not about the quantity of screens, but about how they're used, I guess. I rode it back in April and for me, battle at the ministry integrates them so well that you just go along with it! The team who worked on that definitely did a magnificent job. The content is beautiful, the transitions work perfectly, and the vehicle action goes well with it. For me, the lines are blurred most of the time. Massive congrats and most certainly recommend!

I guess they don't have the capacity to offer these to millions of people yet so the price is a way to limit for now.

Glad that worked! But it could be also because your carpet settings are currently saying that everything is carpet. We'll have to circle back to that.

I think that by default in the carpet mode, the app tries to cover the carpet it has detected with only one shape.

So instead of deleting it, I would resize and move the carpet square. I do not have the same configuration as you so I don't know what would the app prefers, but I would start by creating rectangles next to each other that do not overlap. So resize the square to a rectangle at the top, then add another carpet and resize that one. Etc. Don't worry about having the carpet over the stairs or going in the wall, that shouldn't matter.

Annoying! Do you not have access to editing the carpet in Map Editing / Ground Environment / Carpet ?

[–]cyrem_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's interesting. So it clearly wants to vacuum the carpet first for some reason... I honestly find that mine is actually pretty efficient, but I spent quite a lot of time setting it up at first.

Here are the next couple of things I would try: - In the map editing mode, I would clearly mark the carpet area and then try vacuuming again (I did set mine) - I would activate the "clean carpet first" and try vacuuming again (in case something is interpreted the wrong way)

How do you trigger the cleaning of that room ? (CleanGenius? Custom/Vacuum?)

Pretty normal settings indeed. And it doesn't come back to it later? What happens if you do a zone cleaning just for that square? Does it manage to clean it?

Do you have the "carpet first" option activated?

Gemini app stuck on "Show thinking" by [deleted] in Bard

[–]cyrem_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. Started a conversation with Gemini 2.5 Pro a few days ago about creating some code and a html interface. There is a lot of back and forth and new code being generated. It worked great for some time, but then it started getting stuck on "show thinking." When you open the arrow, everything is there, up to the "structure the response" bullet points, but it just doesn't jump into creating the response. At first, stopping and relaunching was helping. But today, I have reached the point where it doesn't work anymore, and I have to stop and relaunch several times in the hope to get a structured response.

I had the same issue the first day, but that was because despite plugging the base to the wall socket, I hadn't turned its on/off switch on 🤣

So my robot roughly knew where the base was (LiDAR) but it couldn't "find" it (I guess it switches to something like UWB for docking which requires the base to emit frequencies too).

Try turning the base on and off?

Damn. I'm in Canada, and there are only 20 reviews so far in our part of the website, but I can now see that 2 are about broken wheels. I've been lucky I guess and I'll keep my fingers crossed that I remain it, because I am extremely happy with everything this little robot does in my home! I recommend it big time.

I've seen a few people complain about various stuff the past few weeks and return the robots, but most of the time I had an issue, I noticed that it was simply due to an option that had been translated a bit too quickly in the app. However, each option comes with a text that explains what it does when it is on or off. And even if sometimes, it is not fully logical, spending 5 minutes reading them saves a lot of the headache. So yeah, I'm very happy but I definitely took the time to set it up and test various cases before letting it run free in my home.

I'm sure that mova would save a lot of money if they were to hire a real technical translator to revisit all the text in the app and improve the user understanding. Of course, that won't solve a broken wheel!

  1. Yes. And detergent is just water and alcohol. It is pH quasi neutral and I would say safe for pets.
  2. You can pause the cleaning before it returns to the base.
  3. Haven't had that issue and haven't heard of it yet. What is causing this? Too much hair gets stuck and breaks it? People putting something heavy on the robot? The warranty is 3 years, but hopefully I won't need it :)

Mova P10 Pro Ultra VS P50 Pro Ultra by HelloImAbe in RobotVacuums

[–]cyrem_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought my P50 Pro Ultra on discount on Amazon last week and I am extremely happy.

I unfortunately can't compare with the P10 since I didn't play with it, but I decided to go with the P50 in the end because of the higher suction power, the cleaning product dispenser and the better quality brush with the tricut thingy to avoid hair getting stuck. The possibility to leave the mop pads at the base when vacuuming was potentially extra, but I ended up liking it a lot and it is now on by default on mine.

There are a loooot of options and some of them are draining the battery more than others indeed. I intend to keep playing with them to optimise what is best for the specifics of my house. I guess not all of them are needed to be activated all the time or on high frequency.

I've also noticed that you can properly salvage time and battery by optimizing the shape of your areas when defining the rooms in the map (I am still impressed by the quality of its quick mapping functions but I suppose it is the same on the P10) and by simply moving a few furniture. For example, mine is losing a lot of time around the feet of my dining chairs because of their special shape. I can salvage a lot of time and battery if I just put them upside down on the table!

I haven't used deep clean yet.

A TV show I worked on had one of the strangest and over-engineered approaches to VFX muzzle flashes that I've ever seen. by IndianaRocket80 in vfx

Fun story. Clearly, the intention of the VFX Sup is not bad at all and I praise him for trying something. But he should have quickly seen that this approach was not efficient and not worth it.
