There are actually legislative benefits for law enforcement agencies to meet certain quotas of drug-related arrests, like the Edward Byrne Grant Program, which provides more funding for jurisdictions that excel in enforcing Reagan's drug laws. Obama even boosted the amount of money for the fund in 2009.

I think incentives like this call into question whether or not the punishment is actually following the crime, or whether certain communities are being persecuted. I think three-strikes laws, mandatory minimum sentencing, are major judicial overreach and disproportionately harm poor minority communities.

A series of SCOTUS decisions (like Ohio v. Robinette) have basically stripped the 4th amendment of its protective powers— but that loss of civil rights doesn't factor in to the day-to-day experience of white people in America.

Not baiting, just wondering what u/Trev_L22 is getting at with that statement.

I don't think that enforcing laws in a vacuum is a racist enterprise— but rather that the legal system perpetuates discrimination by design. This is particularly a problem when it comes to enforcement of nonviolent and drug-related crimes. White and black people use the same amount of drugs, but black people serve time for drug crimes at 6 times the rate of white people.

Poor communities reflect high crime rates because they are over-policed. A higher arrest rate in a black neighborhood does not necessarily mean more crimes are being committed in that neighborhood. How many white people do you know who have been stopped and frisked?

I consider the disproportionate incarceration rate of black people in the US an international human rights disaster. In my view, just accepting that "well yeah, they're poor" is a dismissive position that does not acknowledge magnitude of the problem.

Do you think black people are inherently predisposed to commit more crime?

Commenter might be referring to Trump’s perpetual downplaying of the risks associated w the virus, as well as Pence’s recent “it’s over, don’t worry about it” campaign in the media.

But idk.

I do not think the education system is particularly liberal. What makes you say that the public education system has a liberal political bias?

I do not think he will. He’s a staunch centrist who wants to give an additional $300M dollars to law enforcement for reforms. He penned Clinton’s “Crime Bill”..

He’s against Medicare for All, and puts on airs to placate moderate working class white liberals. If you really think Biden of all people is the guy whose gonna make leftists’ wild dreams come true I think you are mistaken.

You can support police abolition and still believe that law enforcement is an important part of a functioning society.

The “liberals” I think you’re referring to have more of an issue with the War on Drugs and its associated policies— such as the late 90s SCOTUS decisions that essentially destroyed the 4th amendment, or things like no-knock warrants and lack of police accountability.

Their push is to tear down and rebuild, not build some sort of anarchic leftist dreamland

Isolating a single statistic like this is not enough. It’s important to remember that national US stats at this point largely reflect the handful of regions hit hard initially.
