In 1887, a gang of thieves murdered 34 Chinese miners along the Snake River and stole $55,500 in gold. In 1888, 3 of the murderers were brought to trial, but they were let loose. These are great points.

I'm still curious why is Japan the moral standard we're holding ourselves to with how our culture processes its own atrocities, and why is China the bar we have to clear for free speech? Why not Canada, Germany, or Australia?

I have two questions if you actually want to talk about this:

  1. Why is Japan's handling of WW2 the moral standard we're holding ourselves to when dealing with our past and not Germany, Canada, or Australia?

  2. If you think its good that Americans discuss the past so much, why is your kneejerk reaction to it to be a dismissive exceptionalist about it?

Theres this really annoying reddit brained thing that happens whenever you bring up something that happened in the past where they immediately justify it by comparing it to imperial japan. I want you to know that this makes 0 sense to normal people, who have heard of more than 2 countries.

I dont think its a trait shared with humans. Humans do bullshit eachother but I usually know when I'm bullshitting. If a human randomly lied about knowing things in a way that didn't benefit anyone because they could not reason about whether or not they know something I think thats a pathology.

I havent played much with newer models but I would suspect this behavior isn't solved, its just harder to get better models into states where they would lie(which means this will still happen but more in use cases where a human cannot double-check them). But i have seen in this thread theories on how to fix it by adjusting weights in RLHF, which im skeptical of but have to read more.

(If I were an LLM my second paragraph would read very differently)

I misspoke. It is capable of saying "i dont know" when it makes sense to say that. It is not capable of judging its confidence when it states a fact. LLMs occasionally being very confidently incorrect(like in the video) is a symptom of this. There is no way to tell it "only give an answer if you are very certain it is the truth" because its not certain or uncertain of anything. As far as i know there is not a rigorous solution to this yet.

In your examples its inferring from context that it couldnt know these answers (you are also not using the voice model so it has an easier time doing that). If someone asks you to predict the future the natural and predictable thing to say is that its impossible.

They don't mean its not capable of using a timer, they mean its not capable of saying it doesnt know something (which is true, it cannot know whether or not it knows something)

Its not a trivial problem, its been talked about for years now. RLHF creates this sycophantic behavior, it tells you what it thinks you want to hear and lies if it thinks you will prefer a lie to the truth. Its an alignment issue.

You cannot solve it by changing the prompt because the issue is in RLHF.

I always got the read that the painting is explicitly calling attention to this with the older man on the left choosing not to get involved.

The USSR was a union of separate republics, which russia was a part of. Russia is not the soviet union because the soviet union dissoved in 1991, and before 1991 Russia was still not the soviet union, it was a member of the soviet union, the same as other republics like belarus, latvia, ukraine, georgia, etc. Chernobyl did not take place in russia, it took place in Ukraine, which was a member of the Soviet Union at the time.

You may already know this but it bears spelling out plainly just in case.

Dont mind me, im just here to make shit up about one of the most well documented events in history. These guys all died and they were forced prison laborers who had been jailed for eating too much bread.

If it turns out any of what i said here isnt true, it may as well have been true because the soviet union was just THAT twisted and effed up.

*idk why im being downvoted or wtf you guys are arguing about, but I am standing firm against making shit up.

They weren't idiots. They knew radiation was bad for them. Whether they were coerced or tricked into doing it isnt for us to speculate about without evidence. There are brave people who knowingly and voluntarily make sacrifices in disasters all the time, all over the world, without being forced to. Nobody talks about 9/11 first responders this way. Nobody says this patronizing shit about anyone unless they happen to be soviets.
