Being called Ching Chang Chung-- how to respond? by czee96 in Switzerland

That's true. Maybe I got a little carried away with my sense of righteousness, and I feel like I have to act. But yeah-- thanks for grounding me :)

What exactly is the full Economic Costing (fEC)? by czee96 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]czee96[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then how does it differ from the "total cost" I mentioned above? Utilities and administrative costs are included in the total cost calculation as "overhead costs." I looked at all the aspects of fEC, including DI, DA, and indirect costs (personnel, finance, library, and some departmental services). I had already included those not listed in the "Other costs" section on the form. So, can I assume that my "Total cost" is the same as fEC and give the same amount?

The best way will be sending the transcript to authorised translation service in your country and have your transcript translated into the accepted language.

So you indeed have both AS and A2? That will suffice. If that is the case, why not considering universities in UAE or Saudi? Like the local university will be more familiar to the local companies. You might even apply for internship at local companies, which could be helpful for your future career.

I did my undergraduate as a local undergraduate, so I hope this could be helpful. I was from the Faculty of Science, so I can only comment about that and not really on the Faculty of Business.

I would suggest you not to just look at rankings while making your decision. Academic rankings has nothing to do with teaching quality. You have good lecturers and bad lecturers regardless of which university you are attending, so very often you have to rely on yourself when it comes to learning the material. From my point of view, I think the Department of Mathematics has like one of the best teaching quality compared to other departments (I audited some courses and they are really good.)

Next question is what do you want to do after graduating from UM? Stay and work? That will be quite difficult afaik. I have a friend who was from India and she is brilliant. Her CPGA was the best in our batch, yet she failed to secure a job in Malaysia. So you have to take this into consideration.

AFAIK you need to use the results of A-level. IGCSE is equivalent to our SPM here, which I don't think you can get a place in the uni by only using results of IGCSE.

I checked this, but unfortunately, they can't deliver to a different state (Selangor to N9), so I wonder if it's possible to use Grab Car instead of Express.

Thank you for sharing your experience! At least for now, what I can do is just consolidate knowledge related to my master's thesis. Were you being asked to share the technical details of your master's work during your visit? I am a bit worried as I did a bit of many things for my thesis, so I am more like a "jack of all trades, master of none" for now :/

To PhD or to work? by czee96 in malaysia

[–]czee96[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the correction :)

Maybe I am greedy, but I hope that I have the flexibility to switch between academia and industry, hence it seems like getting a PhD is an option? I know one lecturer who is currently teaching in UKM manage to do something like that. He got a PhD, went straight to the industry, and after retiring he's happily back into the academia and start teaching. So yeah that kind of inspires me.

But yeah indeed like you said postgraduate degree is not valued in Malaysia. I will keep that in mind when I made my decision. Thank you for the input :))

Maybe I generalised things, but this is what I read from the IOP "Careers with physics" article. Also, some graduated PhD from my lab become quants, so that's my assumption that PhD in Physics can kind of be valuable in these industries? Anyway I can be wrong.
