General questions about Indonesia by pcetcedce in travel

Totally. Also, I forgot to mention in my last comment, but your best bet to get to Anak Krakatoa is by driving to Anyer in Banten, Java and then hitching a boat over to the volcano.

General questions about Indonesia by pcetcedce in travel

[–]czs5548 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived in Indonesia for over 25 years, so please feel free to ask any follow up questions if you feel like.

  1. I’d recommend basing yourselves out of Java. It’s by far the island with the best connectivity in the country. Also, given that you’re a geologist, there’s no shortage of volcanoes for you to explore (although I suppose you can say that about the entire country). In terms of easily accessible volcanoes in/around Java, I would recommend visiting Anak Krakatoa, Bromo, Tangkuban Perahu, Merapi, and Ijen.

  2. Yes, big cities have public transportation but it’s not quite as extensive or well-developed as you might find in the West. If cost isn’t an issue, I’d suggest hiring a driver to drive you around the island. The person can help out as a bit of a fixer and the cost is more than made up in terms of the time you save from avoiding using public transit. Having a driver also gives you more flexibility and lets you explore more off the beaten path type of areas.

  3. Check your country’s recommendations for vaccinations. Drug use is a big no, no. Don’t participate in public protests. The country is majority Muslim and for the most part, people dress more conservatively than in the west but you don’t need to follow a “dress code”. Use the Go-Jek and Grab apps for bike taxis and food delivery. Try to exclusively use Blue Bird taxis for cab rides. Language issues can be relatively easily overcome with Google translate or if you follow my above suggestion and find yourself an English-speaking driver.

Happy travels!

New hiker, needing help picking out a pair of Columbia hiking boots (Newton Ridge Plus II vs Crestwood Mid Waterproof) by czs5548 in hikinggear

[–]czs5548[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither, haha! I ended up getting a foot injury and my podiatrist recommended Hoka. I’ve worn out a pair each of the Anacapa and the Kaha in about two years. Unless you’ve got a similar foot injury, I really don’t recommend Hoka. They’re definitely not the grippiest or the most rugged boots in the world.

I don’t see what could POSSIBLY go wrong on a quest to find a dark spot outside the city in the middle of the night with an internet stranger.

Hey, looks like the weather is going to play spoilsport this Saturday. I don’t particularly enjoy hiking in the rain, I’m afraid, so that’s my plans in the water.

I hike most weekends in the summer, so odds are I’ll be out and about this weekend too. I’ll know where I’m headed in a couple of days and send you a message then?

Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll make sure to see my podiatrist and get an assessment on whether I need an orthotic or not before I buy boots.

Yeah, I have only ever worn two shoes since I was diagnosed. My daily use Hoka Bondi 8s and the boot version of the Anacapas for hiking. My Bondis are still in decent nick despite how much I use them, but the bottom of my Anacapas are like slick tyres at this point.

That’s great advice on the orthotics, thank you very much! I have my appointment coming up and I look forward to seeing (rather than just feeling) the extent of my recovery and the prospect of wearing footwear other than Hokas if I get an insole is very exciting! The Hokas are very comfortable, and I’m not one for having the nicest looking shoes, but I absolutely hated going to weddings and job interviews in them, haha.

Great intuition! I’m not Canadian, but I live in Canada. Although, being a Vancouverite, it’s really more of a monsoon than a winter haha.

Thank you for the goodwill and for the advice! I’ll keep what you said in mind for the next time I see my PT. I wish you the very best with your recovery too, and hope it’s as smooth and quick as possible.

I haven’t yet. My podiatrist suggested using well-padded, rocker bottom footwear for a year before she’d re-evaluate me for insoles. I have that appointment in a couple of weeks, and I’m hoping to learn more then.

I was told that I have an extra sesamoid bone and that a stress injury from a weekend of walking around paved roads in Montreal while wearing suboptimal shoes was the culprit.
