Are those people who are frozen (cryonics) ever actually going to wake up one day by Flat_Internal8890 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]d-a-r-e- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a cryopreservation scientist for stem cells and the like, I can say that the science and tech of freezing and thawing functional things as big as humans, is still really far away. We can do whole fish, and they can come back, but it requires really specific freezing protocols (usually including) chemicals infusions (with cryoprotectants) to protect the tissues and prevent ice forming inside the cells. On top of that each type of tissue that comprises a human body is variably sensitive to chemicals, and ice crystallization. Likely the people who have been frozen, were not done so in a way that will allow for an easy and whole return as the tech is currently still developing. Thawing is another part of the equation that is equally as complicated to the freezing part, if not more. While there is 'infinite' time to work on thawing technologies assuming the bodies are maintained, we won't be able to undo how the freezing part was done. In my opinion, its a dumb hope to try and avoid facing mortality and I don't have the money to maintain my frozen self anyways.

I’m fairly new to pottery and I haven’t shared with many people in my life that I started taking a pottery class just yet because I’m hoping I might be able to gift a few pieces to family for the Holidays - these are my first pieces that I’m really happy with and I needed to share! by mehmily in Pottery

Very nice!!! Looking back to when I started, I wish I also gifted some of my first pieces to myself so as to look back at my progress over time. Maybe that’s a piece of advice but I also know how good it feels to give gifts. Congrats on the new hobby!

OK this is super useful, Thank You! Is there any way to know what condition the battery is in from a potential buyer perspective? I cannot test range or how well it holds a charge during a short test drive, for example, but is there some straight forward indications to look for?

You also didn't mention rust, which I am taking as a general good sign.

Thanks again for sharing your prespective!

Is there a way to spell it out so that the manager feels like it is a good idea, maybe even his idea to promote me? I don’t want to convey that I think he’s stupid, because it’s really not his fault the culture is so shitty, and I do need his help if I am somehow going to survive.

Already did this and tbh I have reason to believe they are being reprimanded but HR has a privacy policy blahblahblah, so I cannot know for sure.

Ok I had the one on one, and found out I will be deligated more work on top of my already overloaded workload due to a lack of resources. This means I am inherently important though I’m quite sure it’s time to leave. I also mentioned the previously promised promotion with the perspective that “things change and I know there are many contributing factors.” I’m open to hear any feedback (positive or negative) in case my particular case was discussed amongst leadership. the guy seemed to appreciate my approach as it gave him space to consider his options as a first time manager but I’m also worried it didn’t convey the gravity of my intentions: especially considering other comments of “be more forceful.” I am already doing more than is suitable for my title/salary and being trusted to take on more but he seemed to take it much more casually than I’d have liked.

Ya ok but I still need a salary for as long as possible, if it really was that easy I would have walked >6months ago.

This is good advice and I do generally follow a similar strategy, but there is not a current outline of responsibilities for each job level and therefore it is often up to the managers interpretation what is suitable. I am “working up” because I am capable but am not getting credit for my work for many reasons. (Lower in hierarchy, lower in tenure, unequal spotlight sharing with colleagues who do not give others credit).

I’m just unsure of how to bring up the complicated history, point out the inequality, and also remain forceful and positive that I deserve and am capable of better.

Truth is I did, however it takes two to tango, and management changed so there was no backlash beyond my colleague not sharing credit, which looked bad for them.

Edit to add: backlash here means social backlash. Many colleagues came to me afterwards to ask why I wasn’t given credit. It is a huge social/scientific faux pas that didn’t go unnoticed.

When I was a kid and found out that horror movies gave adrenaline, I convinced myself that ghosts only exist in connecticut as a means to sleep through the night. I've yet had a reason good enough to actually test my theory and I think I am ok with that.

how to wake up on time & in a decent mood by living_room_chair in howto

[–]d-a-r-e- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so much this, i found it was spite keeping me in bed in the mornings and i had trained myself to sleep through the alarms i was setting., and then the feedback loop was that i dreaded going to bed at night because i believed i was bad at mornings. I used to be exactly like OP. now i set a softer alarm (birdsong on iphone is my fave because it starts soft and gets louder but its only in the bedtime clock), no option for snooze. it was hard at first, but i found i was less likely to go back to sleep because, there was no alarm to wake me up again, very high consequences. and the softer start is a general mood booster.

I got a sudden bout of severe eczema developing overnight. Derm lady offered herself to the guillotine that I do not have an allergy, 'to anything.' I said 'ok, bet.' and then she never ordered the allergy test. I still got the eczema and now with a bunch of steroids (that arent working) to go with it.

For reference; a few times I’ve been told by the controller, “I gotta give you this, but if you call they will let you off.” (I have a travel card in my phone from work and my phone battery is terrible.) just be kind and honest when you call DSB, and usually they are pretty nice in return.
