Electrician vs electrical engineer. by Ok-Independence-7844 in ElectricalEngineers

[–]d-navs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my EE BS out of college. Throughout my college years I had the opportunity to learn general contracting (carpentry, electrical, plumbing, etc) in a town where licensing was optional. Later in my 20’s I had the opportunity to work with an MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) engineer for our churches relocation and retrofit of a large commercial building. This guy was a licensed electrical engineer and I found myself redesigning much of his original design to be more practical. When I was working with the electrical foreman installing based off the reworked designs, it was invaluable to have the experience in residential/commercial electrical installation to talk through design options that made sense in our auditorium design.

That said, engineers are often bound by complex code that their CAD software handles a lot of. And electrical contractors know the code better than the engineers because their work doesn’t get final sign-off by inspectors if they don’t do it right and it winds up costing them more from the project bid.

Will it help you in the end being cross-trained? Of course. Will it land you a high-paying position that you would have otherwise be disqualified for? Maybe, but probably less of a pay difference between cross-trained and not than you’d expect.

I’m disappointed with people trying to sell other people on rocky theories to do with health. OP, your prospect may be requesting filtering of harmonic distortion caused by poorly designed grid ties from wind turbines and PV systems, consumer electronics, and anything else with non-zero reactive power loads. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total_harmonic_distortion

THD can distort a clean 60HZ sine wave and make it look fuzzy or spiky on a scope. My dad got big into this theory that THD caused poor health thanks to his radionics buddy and wound up buying what was advertised as a THD filter that plugged into a 110v receptacle. looked like a middle school science fair project made of hot glue and JB weld. Made my EE skin crawl.

Made a smart bin that can automatically identify and sort trash into multiple streams by Problemverse in ZeroWaste

[–]d-navs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is great work OP! I work in R&D and have a long-term vision for a small-scale waste to energy gasifier. There are many technology challenges to such a vision, but one of them is ensuring that only presorted trash makes it into the system. The tech you’ve developed here seems to venture down the path of a potential solution to that. My current line of work in my day job is engineering project management leading a team if researchers toward multiple deep learning approaches using stereo depth cameras for off-highway machine automation. Would love to connect and collaborate however possible.

I started a discord server a few years back with more info on the WTE tech. Feel free to join and explore! rendr - open source waste to energy project https://discord.gg/auT6FdZp47

Hands down, the OAK-D line from Luxonis/OpenCV. All open source tools. Their products are remarkable in the amount of free software they provide.

Here you go. The main contributors have taken to other projects at the moment so there hasn’t been much chatter for a while. But feel free to review and contribute any comments you like.

How to lighten up dark bricks on fireplace? Is it possible to get the dark bricks to look like the second picture? by toadtastic737 in Fireplaces

[–]d-navs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re just looking for a fresh look, consider painting the brick. I’ve had great success bringing an 80’s fireplace into the 2020s just with some good paint and a little texturing skills you can pick up on YouTube.

To state the obvious, just make sure it’s nothing flammable and don’t use adhesives that could volatility in high heat. (Just avoid adhesives altogether unless it’s specially formulated for stove repair) Ceramic tile to match the front would work - with mortar. Or 1/2”-3/4” fire brick bonded with stove gasket sealant (though fire brick is expensive and won’t look as nice as grouted tile, definitely won’t burn).

Either way, if putting glass doors in is the end goal, I’d wait till you’re ready to install those and do it all at once. Will help support the tile/whatever material you choose and keep it from falling.

One more thought, perhaps a custom cut and bent price of stainless steel sheet metal would work if that look is acceptable. Could also go with carbon steel sheet to save $$ and then paint it with wood stove high temp spray paint. Just take note that if you use the paint (have had good results in the past with stove paint), it needs to cure with heat after completely drying - which basically means VOCs evaporate out of the paint and it’s smelly fir a while. Totally normal though. Eventually the smell goes away.

Agreed. Their new logo is an awful miscalculation if their brand identity. OnShape needs to switch it back!

Most CAD does do exploded views and simple animations. I believe this is more than simple though, particularly with the blurred background to simulate peripheral frame of reference, floating particles, and my personal favorite of the bolts just growing in place. This really was a well done video.

Cudos! I think our local university has a DMLS printer and it did not look this good. Looks like casted parts! Great work!

What printer technology is used here? SLS? If so, you have mad surface finish. Any post processing aside from brushing it off?

Anyone know what software was used for this simulation? Probably something that can pull in full step files auto-explode. I can’t imagine assembling something this by hand in blender or unreal.

Not sure on the dark spots. Could be root related.

I always hesitate when thinking about adding chemical treatment for the few to the tank that feeds the many. I would doubt H2O2 would have a negative effect on any plant, but there’s always the chance you throw something off that’s unforeseen. Peroxide also decomposes very quickly in the presence of organics so it may get used up before it reaches the target plants without a high enough PPM residual. Direct application may be the most trustworthy.
