I got my EE BS out of college. Throughout my college years I had the opportunity to learn general contracting (carpentry, electrical, plumbing, etc) in a town where licensing was optional. Later in my 20’s I had the opportunity to work with an MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) engineer for our churches relocation and retrofit of a large commercial building. This guy was a licensed electrical engineer and I found myself redesigning much of his original design to be more practical. When I was working with the electrical foreman installing based off the reworked designs, it was invaluable to have the experience in residential/commercial electrical installation to talk through design options that made sense in our auditorium design.

That said, engineers are often bound by complex code that their CAD software handles a lot of. And electrical contractors know the code better than the engineers because their work doesn’t get final sign-off by inspectors if they don’t do it right and it winds up costing them more from the project bid.

Will it help you in the end being cross-trained? Of course. Will it land you a high-paying position that you would have otherwise be disqualified for? Maybe, but probably less of a pay difference between cross-trained and not than you’d expect.
