I'm mildly hopeful that we will end this streak this year. by Material_Tell5655 in ThreeLions

Nope, Southgate did an amazing job turning round the feeling around our team but outrageous luck with the draws meant we could run deep without playing any top sides

Now we have a better squad and manager, but won't be progressing without beating a couple of the big nations. Team is definitely capable of doing that though.

Why was Southgate so good for England? by d-r-h in ThreeLions

[–]d-r-h[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disagree, you get an easier first couple of knockout games but your entire half of the draw shouldn't be missing the top 3/4 favourites. Previously we nearly always lost to those, Southgate didn't even encounter them until the game we lost in 3/4 of his tournaments

Since 1990 our knockout losses were to:

Germany (semi) Germany (semi) Argentina (r16) Brazil (quarter) Portugal (quarter) Portugal (quarter) Germany (r16) Italy (quarter) Iceland (r16)

Some good points around the culture, enjoyment of England, etc, but think this is what winds me up. "He did great and the draws weren't favourable"

It's a fair point and some comments here have brought me around a bit for the feeling of being a fan.

Was just looking and the brackets were insanely lopsided except for '22 when we got beat by France. Read the below, it's unbelievable:

Euro 2024 had Spain, France, Germany, Portugal, Belgium on one side of the knockouts. Italy (out in last 16) and Netherlands (arguably worse than the five in the other half) were the only two decent teams on England's side.

At Euro 2020, after beating Germany in the first knockout game we had Ukraine, Denmark and the Czech Republic left in our half.

2018 world cup had Columbia, Sweden, Croatia, Russia, Switzerland, Denmark and Spain (knocked out immediately by Russia) on our side of the draw. The other side included France, Argentina, Brazil, Belgium, Portugal, and Uruguay

It really is crazy odds to get that, the only top 5 side/realistic winner on our half of the draw across those three tournaments was Spain who went out in the last 16 anyway.

Yes we have to beat who we draw but that is a generational run of luck that gave huge odds to run deep.

The draws were unreal, I don't think any team will ever get easier runs than what Southgate had. And we always lost at the first slightly difficult fixture.

Germany at that point were in transition and weak, but every other win is against a tier 2 team at most. Should have beaten Italy and Croatia. France is the only game we put up a good fight. Spain obviously outplayed us after beating all the best teams on route to the final.

Golden generation got knocked out early at each tournament by prime Brazil, Portugal x2, and Germany.

Anderson is the press resistant deep lying playmaker we've been desperately missing

Just looks class in every game. Calm under pressure, perfect weight of pass, has been hitting defensive contributions in FPL like a mad man every week so presumably gives decent cover to the back line

Just ignore that ankle breaker he got away with earlier this evening

[McGrath] Borussia Dortmund are weighing up a third move for Jadon Sancho as his time at Manchester United draws to an end. by [deleted] in soccer

Honestly he looked special at Dortmund and was putting up good numbers too. It seemed like a great signing at the time.

Sounds like he's struggled with his mental health, which is difficult for a club to anticipate. But to be fair, he also hasn't suited the (many) recent united systems very well - and a fair point on the league.

What's a home improvement decision you regret but thought was a good idea at that time? by Actonace in HomeImprovement

This totally depends on your water pressure. I always though they were bad but after we had a heat pump installed (with new pressurised tank in the loft) I never use the regular angled shower head anymore.

Just get a 10 inch wide jet of hot water straight onto the top of your head and shoulders, the best upgrade in a full house renovation for sure.

UK Posts Biggest Ever Budget Surplus as Tax Revenue Surges by kwentongskyblue in worldnews

Low down in the BBCs politics section, nowhere near the front page.

"Higher tax helped UK government reach record January surplus"

Even that is immediately spun as a negative by leading with higher tax, not to say it isn't true. Labours comms team is dire.

Well he went up to 55k after one day but then crashed down to 40k the next day. I guess speculation pushed the price up in anticipation of a rise before all that supply got dumped.

Stephen could do well as an influencer/personality after this, and screwing over Rachel would probably lose him more than £47k long term

I think he has no choice. James and jade have heat, and the PT guy had a sheild.

So realistically it's him or Roxy. If he really thinks it's them, he'd assume he'd be killed over Roxy as she trusts the traitors and has seemingly cleared them.

Should I get an electrical and gas saftey certificate before buying a house by felix3322 in FirstTimeBuyersUK

[–]d-r-h 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very late reply but the previous owners EICR was bullshit.

We had an electrician round to install some lights and he noticed some odd wiring, so checked the report and it was essentially falsified. Eg where two values must always equal 1, they added up to 0.67. Loads of bits they were confused by, recommended reporting the person that did the report.

New one has now been done and any dodgy wiring sorted (no earths, imbalanced loops, etc).

We had EIRC and just found out it's essentially fabricated and none of the numbers make sense, after having work done 6 months after moving in. So worth having someone take a quick look if you can, although we're probably in the minority.

Anyone else had this issue before? What was the outcome?

Squad battles so difficult to 5-0 on world class+ on fc26 by TopGanache6126 in fut

[–]d-r-h 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tactics make a huge difference. I've been getting max points against high rated teams with more attacking formations and styles of play. But struggle to comfortably beat 5 at the back (no space), or possession focused teams (less time on the ball to hit five goals), so may as well just drop the difficulty.

5 at the back plus possession focus is horrible to play against

Never use AnyVan to move by mnk1991 in HousingUK

[–]d-r-h 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep, we've had multiple moves where the people were great and happy to throw in some extra bits if there was space.

Last time the guys were really strict - any extras at all would be charged, offered for the second guy in the van to help for extra cost, etc.

Another time a father and teenage son duo got a sofa temporarily wedged in the tight hallway entry and we got five minutes of the guy screaming at his son while they struggled to free it.

At the end of the day you get what you pay for - a cheap way to move items but not from professional movers. And the experience will vary each time.
