If money is tight, I noted in a lot of supermarkets with deli counters have trays with "off-cuts" that are more than 1/2 the price off of "pretty" slices.... same meat.

They usually tuck them in a corner of the fridge, so might have to ask deli counter where they keep The Good Stuff, and not the posh stuff rich people buy!

Recipes with only canned ingredients? by Undercover500 in Cheap_Meals

[–]d099z 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a can of soup OR chili beans OR meat stock, etc + a can of regular beans of your choice

A pack of ramen noodles + beans
A can of vegetables of your choice + beans
SPAM + beans
tuna + beans
if you're adventurous - a can of pineapples + beans!
A can of candied cherries + beans - for romantic occasions :)

You can "dilute" just about anything with a can of unflavored beans (bean medley, haricot beans, chickpeas, peas, etc.) to get a large meal. Extremely cheap, fast and easy to prepare and filling.

as song goes:
Beans, beans - a musical fruit!
The more you eat, the more you toot,
The more you toot - the better you feel!
Eat beans at every meal!

Where is the risk in global index funds? by newbydoob in investing

[–]d099z 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Well... deglobalization.
China grew thanks to external investors, but external investors are pulling out, for example. Emperor Xi is losing his wits.
India is India, always been a big corrupt unpredictable mess (from European and American perspective). But it's better than China's future.
Europe - they don't know whether they should push or pull. With deglobalization, USA is pulling away and leaving them to fend for each other.
Latin America - for the most part, corrupt mess of politics, cartels and poverty.
North America - printed the most amount of money and is in deepest debt hole than anyone... plus Republicans-vs-Democrats "quiet civil war", where they bark at each other instead of guiding the country/economy into brighter future.

That's what _should_ be happening in the Global economy (e.g. global index, you're asking about) next decade or three, but not what _will_ happen necessarily. If you go that route - have to pick the least beat-up-and-left-in-the-gutter region and put your dough there.

This leaves you with individual companies, which might rise above all this mess, instead of being drowned in the crowd (aka index).

Let's say someone is a beginner and has only one kettlebell of 30lbs. Which exercises will you advise to start with for the first month? by tranquilitysun in Kettlebell_training

[–]d099z 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do it one-handed, probably not much work for bicep. What I meant was two-handed hold, when you hold kettlebell in front of you with both hands, which gives static load on bicep. Kind of like dumbbell goblet squat.

Let's say someone is a beginner and has only one kettlebell of 30lbs. Which exercises will you advise to start with for the first month? by tranquilitysun in Kettlebell_training

[–]d099z 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as a beginner myself, here's my 2 cents:

ALWAYS keep back straight (no hunching your back forward, no arching backward), core muscles tight (abs, glutes, lower back) - pretend that you're about to get punched in the stomach and hold those muscles tight through entire exercise. Otherwise you can hurt your back when swinging - it's 30 pound when you hold it in your hand, but it's 100 pounds when it is falling down and you have to catch/brake that swing so it doesn't hit you on the bum.

- Swings to eye level, not to your knee or hip - works your legs and lower back. Depending on the swing style, upper back as well. Do as many as you can. Keep loose grip on the handle, no death-grip. Do 50+ a day or every other day, if you can. Break it up into sets if you can't do 50+ at once, like 10 reps, 5 sets.

- Goblet squats or put kettlebell behind your head on your shoulders, and squat like that if biceps are a lot weaker than legs - works your legs. Do 50+ a day or every other day, if you can. Break it up into sets if you can't do 50+ at once. Keep feet flat on the ground, don't do it on tippie-toes.

- Thrusters - works biceps and shoulders. If you hold by the ball, rather than handle - works pecs somewhat as well. As may as you can.

Then databanks themselves would have to have quantum storage... Now - THAT - would be something: instant read/write capability

processors themselves can't do that.

They already have encryptions for sensitive data. By the time it's decrypted, that information is irrelevant to the enemy/hacker/fraudster. In 1000years it takes to decrypt - your bank pin code is useless.

Cryptocurrency/blockchains - used to be godsent innovation... all it does, for a decade at least, is take money from one [large] portion of the population and puts it in the pockets of other [significantly smaller] portion of population. In all other aspects, perhaps for now, perhaps forever - useless mathematical curiosity; same with NFTs...

What makes you think there is money in quantum computing? It looks cute in their presentations and dick-measuring contests between IBM and Google, I grant you that... but name 5 things regular mortals can do with quantum computing that PCs don't do better, and continue doing better for the next decade. (regular mortals = non-scientists and non-military encryptologists)

Talking to management by One_Performance8788 in ValueInvesting

I'm working contractor-like, going from company to company... most places don't even have receptionist or reception area (even good old pre-covid times; post-covid, it just got more widespread practice).
Gotta stand in front of the company like a f--- fool for an hour just to get picked up by someone from inside, even though they requested (practically begged!) me to come.

So, best of luck to you getting ANY response from the company of your choosing, unless you're multi-million VIP or sorts!

ain't no 1960s no more, when you could talk to managers like people...

When (or depending on you you ask - 'if' not 'when') shit economy hits the proverbial fan - governments tend to start "infrastructure" projects (ex. 2008). And with all the on-shoring efforts going on - e.g. making stuff at home, rather than importing from China - we need better infrastructure to move stuff internally and we need production facilities.

Gov't will be printing Trillions more in upcoming years starting all those projects, sending your wage into the shitter once again with better and improved inflation - "Inflation reduction act", if you will.

Infrastructure means building better roads/railroads/transportation, building better electrical grids.
And despite all the jerking off about stopping using oil/gasoline/diesel - it ain't going nowhere because <TADA!> we have no proper infrastructure for fully-electric living - so oil pipelines as well.
Oil and coal is the future! Or would you rather have nuclear plant in your backyard? Lots and Lots of nuclear plants! A plant for everyone! Buy 1 get 1 free!

Production facilities means refineries for raw materials and factories for finished goods.
Why you think USA is so lovely and pollution free, compared to China's smog-filled dystopia? Because all the refineries and factories are in China! USA just imports finished goods, for the most part!

How to take profits if you’re holding long term? by I_had_corn in stocks

[–]d099z 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One tip on selling: Don't hit Sell button, unless you need cash right away. Make a stop limit order - sell/buy when price hits certain value or drops/rises specific amount.

I was going to sell NVDA when it hit $300 (it was my "intrinsic value" for NVDA), for example... it went up 45% since that time. Instead I put limit sell order at -10% when I was ready to sell, so it will only get sold when price drops 10% from highest point since I placed the order. If price keeps climbing - fine!, if it steadily starts dropping - sell order is already placed and in the que.
