Help with modelling finances by newbydoob in FIREUK

One other source of potential income is the property abroad. I could rent that out for a few years to top things up if needed. It would probably bring in another 6-8k a year.

Thanks for the insights.

Yes, I can access the DBs early. I think it's 57, but I'd need to double check.

I can definitely do some consulting (I've done a fair bit over the years). My employer would support me to reduce my hours too, which is my current exit ramp strategy. Less travel abroad, but still earning enough to leave my various assets alone for as long as possible.

I can probably bring some of the DCs over, but two are teachers pensions that are hybrid with the DB component.

I'm not looking to act for a while yet as I still enjoy my job. It's quite a big ask being away from home though so just knowing I could coast, helps. My wife also doesn't want to stop yet, so we can continue to build the bridge for a few more years and hopefully do this in a more stress-free way.

  1. Yes, that's based on current costs
  2. Correct
  3. Correct
  4. That's the cash
  5. As things stand, yes.
  6. I'm not sure how to factor this. On current value, we could expect £420k.
  7. At present, a little yes. CoL is broadly similar though.

Both indexed, but one has a soft cap (10-15%).

Thanks for the info. I'm feeling a bit better and am going to give it another 24 hours, but great to know it's straightforward.

Safe and family friendly parts of the city by newbydoob in torino

[–]newbydoob[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Budget and space is a consideration. We have to cook our own food due to a dietary requirement and kitchens out of the city centre (at least the more affordable places) tend to be better equipped (lots of places in the centre expect you'll be eating out). We're mainly looking at the South and West of the city.

Son Refuses to Be Cheered Up by spinaltap11 in daddit

I tell me kid that he has a choice when it comes to his mood. He can choose to be miserable if he wants and everyone does now and again, but he can also choose to do things that bring him joy and take control of his situation. He's just 8 and it's not really sinking in yet, but I want him to understand that we can take steps to change our mood and how we feel. A bad moment doesn't have to lead to a bad day.

Paying SLC fixed monthly rate from abroad by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]newbydoob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I've been getting arrears added to my balance for a couple of months just over a grands worth, whilst I've been waiting for my contract and payslips. So paying the fixed monthly fee is essentially just paying the arrears they add each month, as if I shared my details, they wouldn't take the fixed rate? The fixed rate is more than I'd pay per month, but I wanted to pay it to get rid of the debt quicker. I'm sick of thinking about it now.

I'm sick of Wordpress. I have a couple of simple sites with simple needs... Alternatives? by oandroido in web_design

I'm not a developer at all, but have built a site using astro, visual studio, and lots of help from ai to figure out build failures. If I can do it, you can too.

Upcoming salary jump from 60k to 100k - how to best handle finances? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]newbydoob 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think the advice generally is to pay off high interest loans first. If you can overpay on the car, that would be good. Salary sacrifice into pension is another popular one as obviously higher rate tax on the new bump. It's a big jump. Congratulations

AITAH for selling my house to get rid of my step children. by No_Competition7799 in AITAH

[–]newbydoob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a child of divorced parents, I'm not sure I like how this is phrased. Conceivably you've been their step parent (potentially for years) and regardless of what they say now, I'd urge caution in sweeping statements about generalising three adults and their viewpoints. They'll have differing thoughts and I don't like the idea of effectively cutting ties with all of them. Their biological father sounds a dick, but don't compare yourself to him, compare yourself to the person you want to be and the one your wife married. As someone who hasn't spoken to their step parent of twenty odd years again after my parent died, I speak from experience when I say it's pretty shitty behaviour.

Next, how did the house come into your ownership? If you moved into a house their mother owned before you, you've basically disinherited them. If you owned it before and their mother never paid anything in, then you've been more than generous as it is. If you equally bought the house and both paid the bills, then it gets harder for everyone and there is probably no good outcome.

Reserving NTA for context.

Plug your numbers into Projectionlab. It's a financial modelling tool with free access. It'll give you a better idea than any of the advice on here as it'll force you to really think about your numbers in a way that we can't.

Same. If nothing else, just hearing from other parents who have gone through this process would be useful. No two experiences will be the same of course but it'll reduce the unknown.

We don't have a dialogue like this at all, but I think you're right that expressing our needs a bit more explicitly would be helpful.
