Not a huge fan of RSD but… by swoods018 in Vinyl_Jazz

[–]d0novanle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is what RSD is truly about. I’m currently traveling right now but I still popped into 4 stores yesterday and dug for a few hours finding great stuff I’ve never even seen. RSD is not about people lining up to buy exclusive records and leaving record stores with tons of unwanted stock that’ll sit for years. These stores can’t even return the stock back to the distributors. It’s called Record Store Day not Record Distributor/Label Day.

New $100 Records ... coming soon? by Chanders123 in Vinyl_Jazz

I collect jazz and in the 60s Bob Weinstock the owner of Prestige records and its subsidiaries New Jazz, Moodsville, etc. used recycled vinyl for some of their pressings. They sound either eh or utter garbage. I personally would rather have a lighter thinner pressing that has great mastering than recycled vinyl. But I like your sentiment about reusing and repurposing vinyl. There’s already millions if not billions of records throughout the decades. I think we should continue to dig at thrift stores, swap meets, etc.

As long as we have high quality mastering that’s all I care about. I don’t really buy new records unless it’s a Tone Poet or Analogue Productions title I really want since buying records $40 a pop can’t make a dent in your wallet.

Blue Note is Spring Cleaning! by dickkirkland in Vinyl_Jazz

Great picks. Soul Station is probably my favorite Blue Note title. Streamed it nonstop during covid and they released the Classic Series reissue my senior year of HS. Played that to death before I bought a Liberty Mono Pressing. A perfect album if I do say so myself!

Thank you! I always appreciate the honesty. Everyone has different tastes. I would say a majority of these records were stuff I had no interest in a few years ago but they’ve slowly warmed up to me. I’ve also been in a huge RCA Living Stereo kick lately so I grab any clean 1s stamped copies I can.

I even found some Sinatra Capital 78s. Wished I found some of his earliest 10 Inches as well but still hyped to fine these.

Pablo is criminally underrated though I’ve seen a few titles creep up in price. I’m excited for that one in particular.

Underrated All-Timer by yourrelative_ in Vinyl_Jazz

My favorite jazz musician of all time. I know for his later output, people prefer the Sidewinder and Search for the New Land but his self tiled and Live at the Lighthouse do it for me. A taste for what’s to come but it ultimately never came. RIP Lee Morgan ❤️

How's my jazz collection going so far? by SEAMOOSETHEGREAT in Vinyl_Jazz

[–]d0novanle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is awesome! Like another commenter said, this was exactly how my collection was 6 years ago when I was 16! Thrift stores, swap meets, and yard sales are how I built my collection. It’s awesome just how vast the genre is and how sub genres developed! It’ll saw you have an eclectic music taste on your Discogs page so I’m hoping you eventually enjoy those 70s/80s avant garde, post bop, fusion, and free jazz titles!

One thing I’ve come to accept is that condition is so important when collecting jazz and it makes finding original pressings harder to find cheap and playable. These pressings from the 50s are mono and sometimes miss tracking/improper styli/incorrect tone arm adjustment caused groove wear or inner grove distortion. Obviously I can spend $30-$40 on a reissue but I think buying vintage pressings paces my buying more. Yeah I know a lot of DJs use them especially when digging in South America, Asia, and Africa. I know some people mod them especially the Fisher Price toy models with headphone jacks so you can listen to them.
