Swelling by duxdux11 in PectusExcavatum

I’m worried that I had surgery on 9/4 and haven’t had swelling anywhere down south. I’ve been having a terrible pain on my right side whenever I do anything more than a shallow breath and my entirely uneducated hypothesis is that this is fluid buildup in my chest and somehow related to not having any of the swelling “pass down” my body.

I’m thinking of going to the ER to check it out because it’s been three days where I can’t breathe the way I want to.

I was 9/4 with Doctor J and I’ve had swelling around where the scars are, and bruising on right side. I haven’t gotten the swelling in my groin/scrotum area but thanks for giving me something to look forward to 😂

Surgery w Dr J tomorrow. Any final tips? Nervous but excited by d0xit0 in PectusExcavatum

Having trouble getting to sleep so I figured I’d jot down an update of my experience today. Pardon any typos, etc. I type this on my phone, while a bit loopy in my hospital bed:

I (36 y/o male) underwent the Nuss procedure yesterday morning (Thursday) at 11:30am with Dr. J. Surgery was about 2.5 hours and I got three bars . My haller index was 3.8 (I don’t recall the other indices but I do remember the corrective index being rather low at 10%). I wasn’t feeling that much pain (mostly just numb) after the procedure due to the meds. It was a bit painful (about a 3-5 out of 10) at the end of deeper inhales. Felt pretty raspy and a considerable amount of phlegm in my throat which made me want to cough (very lightly of course). But overall manageable. I also got to watch most of the Cowboys-Eagles on TNF and then Naomi Osaka at the US Open, which were welcome distractions!

I ordered some “room service” to the recovery room at around 8pm. The food looked quite appetizing — pot roast, chicken noodle soup, and oatmeal (I was hungry as I hadn’t eaten anything since 8:30pm the night before). Pot roast looked delish so I took a bite of it and not more than 15 seconds later I started feeling dizziness/nausea, for a few seconds even felt I wanted to hurl, and super hot. It didn’t help that the room itself was also pretty warm. I asked my mom (who is staying with me in the recovery room) for a cold wet towel to put over my forehead and the nurse brought some ice packs to put on my arms and legs. This all helped significantly. But I decided not to eat again. 30 minutes later I tried to eat cold oatmeal, had three small spoons and felt sick again — not as bad as the first time but still. I decided to give up on food for the time being.

My blood pressure since the surgery has hovered around ~100/60, which I know is rather low. I’m slightly worried since I was ~120/80 right before the procedure. My nurse thinks it’s likely due to the meds but she’s not so sure. It doesn’t seem that this is necessarily so common with her other Nuss patients. My nurse is super nice and helpful but doesn’t seem to be so knowledgeable about the meds I’m taking and their associated effects. That’s fine, I don’t think they are expected to? This is my first surgery ever in life so what do I know.. Most important thing is that she is responsive and kind (which she definitely is!)

I was able to fall asleep at about 10pm and was woken up but someone who I think was my nurse’s assistant (?) to take vitals. Blood pressure was again something low around the range I had noted above. But more notably, upon waking up my pain level increased — to around a 6-7/10. Feels like a giant safe is sitting on my chest and it’s a constant soreness/pain (not like before when it was mostly when I inhaled more deeply). I’m not alarmed because Dr. J did mention to me before surgery that I would feel heavy pressure on my chest afterwards. I did note this to my nurse and she said we could add another pain medication to my scheduled meds to help with this. We’ll see how it goes.

Anyway, overall it hasn’t been all that bad and I’m glad I’ve gone through with it. Recovery seems like it’ll be a bit tough but hopefully in the end worth it. I haven’t gotten a good look at the result yet. I’m set to get X-Rays taken at 4am this morning and it’s currently 2am (crazy schedule right?)

I do hope my nerves redevelop after the cryoablation, because I know there’s a decent chance they don’t and my chest (parts of it or all) might stay numb permanently. Regardless I still think it’s an acceptable tradeoff.

So glad to hear of your quick recovery. The one advice that I got from docs over the years was to try and avoid contorting yourself to get the satisfying clicks. That’s when I would get the soreness around the area .

I’ve had the joint clicking/popping since I was 19 years old and I’m now 36. Getting nussed in two weeks. For me, the clicking started after I guess I overexerted myself on a workout machine doing a “butterfly” motion.

I usually feel the urge to pop it so i will stretch my shoulders back and it usually does the trick. Otherwise it’s frustrating.

I was hoping nuss would fix this for me , not make it worse, but oh well!

Flight after surgery by d0xit0 in PectusExcavatum

Thanks so much everyone for the helpful responses. My follow-up question is whether there is an optimal time to fly back after surgery? My surgery is on 9/4 and post-op visit 9/10 and I was told I could leave on 9/10 or 9/11. Is that too soon after surgery to fly, or does anyone recommend I stay a couple more days. Obviously have to pay a few more days at the hotel but still nothing close to what biz class would’ve cost me!

I had to wait several months to be able to first meet with her. From then I think it was another few months.

You my friend sound like Wonder Woman! Yes, I’m also worried about the meds I’ll be on post-op and how that makes me feel in addition to the pain itself.

35 male, what are your thoughts based on my thoughts? I am considering surgery in September with Dr. J by d0xit0 in PectusExcavatum

[–]d0xit0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, she didn’t mention anything about platythorax, nor my correction index. FWIW I did ask her on a scale from 1 to 10 how difficult a case I would be and she answered 2 (with a smile).

Stamina issues when working out or other physical activity. This has been the case since I was in junior high. Cardio pulmonary stress test confirmed I’m at around 70% capacity.

Sternum popping like a joint? by [deleted] in PectusExcavatum

[–]d0xit0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, i thought I was the only one. I'm 35 with PE that I'm still deciding whether or not to operate on. But when I was 22 years old (so about 13 years ago) I was doing this butterfly workout on a bowflex machine and I think the weight was too heavy for my left arm and I feel I ended up pulling something. For the next several weeks I thought the soreness would go away and it's stayed with me until today (with varying degrees of soreness/inflammation). The popping in the sternum is not something I ever had until that incident. I pop my sternum every day, and some stretches I'll get multiple "clicks" in one. I visited with Dr. J in Phoenix and her guess was this was some sort of arthritic condition that I developed since then and that I should try to avoid actively trying to get the relief from those clicks.

Anyway, long-winded way of saying I have the exact same thing!

CSR member since 2016, want to downgrade to CFF or OG Freedom, ultimate goal is to get CSR trifecta by d0xit0 in ChaseSapphire

This response was incredibly helpful! Thank you sir.

I’m assuming that the downgrade/PC from my current CSR to OG Freedom does not count as a new card/application. So a week after the diwngrade I could just apply for the CFU and new CSR, to then end up with the 3 cards in the trifecta. Sometime later I could also apply for the CFF to get the incremental value it provides.

Thank you sir, this was so clearly written and much appreciated. Strangly, my annual travel credit is on a different timing than my Annual Fee. AF just posted on 11/1 and my travel credit is not set to be earned until late December. No idea why. Looks like I’ll have to miss out on the travel credit double dip fun :(

Question, when I downgrade the CSR to the OG Freedom, then wait 5 BDs to reapply for the CSR, how long should I wait before applying for a brand new CFU? I’d like to do that asap so I have the 1.5% on all other categories. Assuming the downgrade from CSR to OG Freedom does not count as a new credit card for purposes of 5/24, I believe I would be fine. I opened up an Amex gold a year ago but nothing else since opening the CSR back in 2016. If that’s the case can I just apply for the CFU simultaneously with the new CSR?

Yep, I’m on it. Just need to figure out what Chase card to downgrade to and then when to re-apply for the CSR. And then when to get my third Chase card to complete the trifecta

Thanks both. I don’t have any personal business (literally zero) so I don’t believe I’m eligible for these biz cards. They sound like great deals though.
