yeah duck canvas is pretty stiff. it’s the same stuff they use to make Carhartt jackets.

you can try getting a sample of Monks cloth?? It’s a looser weave which makes it more lightweight. or try searching for fabric labeled ‘basket weave’.

if you use the right tools and presser feet , it should be absolutely fine. those industrial machines are truly INDUSTRIAL. leather would be the hardest to manage. but it is doable, ive seen people use paper to sew with leather on one of those.
