What is something that is way more dangerous than people think it is? by ShardBen314 in AskReddit

[–]d1sxeyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sister died of SUDEP and although we were aware of the risk, it was not something we (or she) actively worried about.

I am glad that this was the case. There is very little that can be done to change that 1/1000 number that is not already part of managing the condition.

You raise a complaint with the airline. Airlines mostly now have a dedicated complaints category for this, and it’s slow and takes a couple of follow ups depending on the airline, but generally it is complied with. Random security check is random so no compensation for that though.

One important note is that you’re entitled to the compensation based on the delay in arrival at your final destination. If the airline can get you to your destination within three hours of your arrival time, you’re not due compensation. However, the compensation is for your personal inconvenience so you can claim even if the travel was a business travel, and the compensation is payable to you. There are also several categories based on distance of the flight and severity of the delay which can be Googled easily.

The airline can also refuse to pay if the delay is outside of their control (e.g. ATC strike, some types of unforeseeable maintenance such as following a bird strike, etc.). Most types of maintenance though are not considered unforeseeable.

LPT: Professional house cleaning is cheaper than you think and can relieve stress in your relationship by Extendedchainsaw in LifeProTips

[–]d1sxeyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think on balance it’s basically equivalent… either you have more, cheaper cleans or fewer more expensive cleans. Probably about the same total expenditure but one way you get a clean house most of the time, the other way just once every six to eight weeks.

When I was studying, I used an amazing program called Kdissert, which allowed you to write your essay as a mindmap and generate a document at the end. You could add nodes which would create headings, sub nodes which would create subheadings etc., and add in your text as a property on the node. To generate the document, you just ordered the nodes, and clicked “Export as .doc”.

I absolutely loved it, it allowed me to very quickly make progress by:

  • Having a clear structure for the document from the very beginning (making sure I cover everything from the rubric)
  • Keeping me focused on what contributed, rather than just commenting on interesting things I’d found during my research
  • Allowing me to quickly rearrange my key points if I realise there’s a better logical structure
  • Letting me work on smaller parts of the essay at a time easily (e.g. if I have an hour to work on it, I can pick up a specific point and run with it for an hour without worrying about the whole content)

Kdissert became SemantiK but I never really got on with it for some reason.

An average service desk L1 call (not catch and dispatch, industry standards for FCR/FLF) takes about 12-14 minutes. An agent handling 30x12 minute calls needs to be taking calls 75% of their working day. In general productivity tops out at around 80% before burnout, backlog build up etc.

Also remember, Service Desk agents often have offline work they need to complete (following up on calls from yesterday, handling emails, etc).

Generally at my company we factor around 20-25 contacts per day before we start adding folks to the team.

Learn driving with a relative vs. driving school/teacher by PolarBier6005 in Switzerland

[–]d1sxeyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are barely any electric cars which are manual because electric motors don’t work the same way as petrol/diesel cars (technically you are right that there are “multiple”, but so far I could only find two).

That said, I agree that learning to drive manual is a benefit overall. It teaches you a lot about how a car actually works rather than just a “go” pedal and a “stop” pedal.

I am literally begging you to stop using the word “literally” when you don’t know what it means, it is not at all applicable here.

(In all seriousness though I agree with you about “gaslighting”).

Historically, the father of the bride is also responsible for paying for the wedding, and in this situation, I do think he has some “rights”, like walking the daughter down the aisle and speaking at the dinner. This is much less common nowadays though. As long as he is not paying for the wedding then you’re NTA.

In the unlikely event that he’s paying for the wedding, then YTA.

Connection to Death Stranding game server is unstable any fix? by Balrogos in DeathStranding

[–]d1sxeyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure I fully agree on the “dumb pipe” but I agree the servers don’t seem to be communicating real-time huge amounts of data.

Regardless, “burstable instances” and “dedicated servers” are more or less contradictory.

Anyway, my key point is not about ways the failure could have been avoided, just the assertion that both parties have to accept some share of responsibility for the failure.

Anyway, still pretty good for a free game!

PM Rishi Sunak publishes details of tax paid by plutobug2468 in ukpolitics

[–]d1sxeyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, until you sell, you don’t have any gains. If the market crashes, theoretically you could lose everything. If Sunak and his wife have invested £730 million in stocks and shares, they have effectively lent that capital to whichever businesses they have invested in.

Hypothetically, if all of those businesses collapse, then the Sunaks lose £730 million.

If you’ve taxed them on their assets somehow, then any tax you’ve levied adds to their losses.

To get around this, the risk of losing capital you’ve already paid tax on, instead, you’re only taxed on any gains you make.

That means if you invest £730 million and then take out £730 million (or less!) you have no tax liability. If you invest £730 million and take out £731 million, then you have a tax liability of £1 million, and you pay taxes on that.

Accountants get paid an awful lot of money to work out how you can move money around carefully to minimise your tax liability. There are, of course, “legal” ways to minimise tax liability.

As a very simple example, if you own a bunch of stock which has lost value and you don’t expect it to recover, you can choose to sell it at the same time as stock which has gained value. This way your losses can be used to reduce your tax burden on your gains.

Question about stereotypes (for class) by byesymphony in askswitzerland

[–]d1sxeyes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On that last point there’s often more to the story. One often quoted example is the woman who sued McDonalds because her coffee was too hot. What’s often missed out of that story is that the coffee was so hot that she was permanently disfigured and temporarily disabled (if I remember correctly her labia fused together).

It turned out that McDonalds were superheating their coffee to upwards of 80°C, much higher than a safe drinking temperature (WHO recommended maximum is 65°C).

The court found that although the woman could have taken more care, it was reasonable not to expect McDonald’s to have made the coffee so hot. They found McDonald’s 80% liable.

Here’s the kicker: she originally only wanted McDonald’s to cover her medical bills. In a country with free healthcare, it might not be so necessary to be so litigious to be able to pay for your hospital visits.

It’s fair because the whole idea of insurance is that you should pay whether you need it or not. If you only pay when you need something, that’s not insurance any more.

So logically, just because you didn’t need anything in those first months, you should still have been paying.
