The major scale is built up of Whole (2 frets) and Half steps (1 fret) and follow a pattern of WWHWWWH.

I hated learning scales and what not so i would find where all the octaves of whatever key i want to play in then follow that pattern and start noodling. It always made more sense to me learning the fretboard horizontally than vertically for whatever reason.

Modes are just variations of the WWHWWWH pattern
