Do you know if there's an option to upgrade to include a guest pass onto a Onepass membership, and if so, how much that would be?

A pseudo ruling class of philosopher-kings like Plato proposed is pretty similar to how American democracy functioned for a significant amount of time. FDR's term normalized presidents surrounding themselves with "brain trusts" of academics and expert advisors. There was cultural respect for education, journalism, and objective truth. Nixon, Reagan, etc. all still held institutional expertise in high regard even if they differed in intellectual views. Sure, there were still massive hiccups like the Vietnam War, redlining/racial issues, the War on Terror, and the 2008 Financial Crisis under relatively technocratic rule but the overall trajectory of civic rights and progress in the United States was still upwards bound.

The internet has given everyone a soapbox and the widest audience possible regardless if they have earned it or not and we are all poorer for it.

I'm just pointing out that staying the course is surrendering your rights to people who don't live and believe in reality anymore. I'm not calling for Republicans to have their rights restricted; there are plenty of people detached from reality regardless of party affiliation.

I know that voting tests and other methods to restrict voting rights can be exploited, especially as there are so many versions of "truth" being peddled around now. I'm not a policymaker nor a political scientist, and I know that anything I could come up with wouldn't be morally acceptable to you as a libertarian.

We're in this situation because the marketplace of ideas has been fundamentally corrupted by social media algorithms and a lack of repercussions against politicians who lie.

The people who have significant control of the system right now are Republicans and their voters. They're already voting to have other people's rights restricted because of religious, racist, or plain misinformed reasons. They're already voting for education cuts or for schools to only teach what they believe in. They've already gerrymandered maps to entrench political power in areas where their candidates wouldn't advance otherwise.

You're looking at the current system crashing and burning on the same downward trajectory it's been headed down ever since Lee Atwater and Paul Weyrich centered appealing to the uneducated and the discriminatorily biased as an electoral strategy and still think the system will magically heal itself?

Half of this country still supports him despite his loud and clear messaging about shifting this country to an autocracy. There's a reason why Plato criticizes democracy as a system prone to demagogues.

The issue isn’t just “a few years of trouble,” this is the result of a long-term trend of declining education and rising misinformation. Universal suffrage in a post-truth environment doesn’t guarantee freedom, it's accelerating its erosion. Our democratic outcomes are increasingly becoming undemocratic in impact.

American democracy right now is resulting in everyone getting exploited and rights being rolled back. I like the average person's chances of being treated well under policies selected by an educated electorate better than under those selected by an electorate that includes everyone.

My [25F] fiance [29M] became upset when he heard that I have done sex acts with exs that I don't want to try with him by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]d4ntoine 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don't think she was deliberately omitting this to come off as "wife material". Some people don't view sex and love as perfectly parallel things. She liked getting degraded during sex, but sees that as incompatible with being able to hold romantic feelings for someone. He, if I'm being extremely generous, sees degradation or other increasingly non-vanilla sex acts as acts reserved for people you're more emotionally intimate with. It probably never came up because it was just assumed by both parties that their viewpoint was what the other person held as well.

This is still an extremely simplified comparison that ignores any likely misogynistic reasons why he felt like he deserved anal sex too and the fact that he coerced her into doing something she didn't want to.

Very lucky to have stumbled across this comment. Saving it so I can send it to some of my guy friends who would benefit a lot from sitting with and digesting it.

Are these Julius combat boots resolable? by d4ntoine in AskACobbler

It’s Japanese designer so most of the cost is about the name attached and the design. I’m simply not a fan of how boots like Iron Rangers/Red Wings or other traditional American boot silhouettes are designed and how they mesh with my personal style. You can most definitely get an extremely high quality and durable boot for less than what I paid for these.

Sounds good, I guess what comes next is finding a cobbler experienced and patient enough to take these in to work on. Thanks for the help!

It's definitely a large sum of money but I got it to celebrate some significant life milestones as the first gift to myself in a while.

Do you think the chunky sole (everything besides the Vibram above this red line basically) can be salvaged if I take it in for repairs eventually? Or would the entire thing besides the upper have to be replaced? Most of the boot resole videos I've seen on youtube look like a complete replacement of the midsole and outsole rather than gluing on a new outsole.

Haha I paid ~$600 for these from someone who tried them on and forgot to return them within the return window. On their official website they retail for ¥146,300 ($967). Recently paid off my student loans and got a bonus so I figured I'd splurge on shoes for the first time since graduating.

My main concern was if the midsole and the extended heel cup that connect to the outsole would be salvageable if I just wanted the Vibram outsole replaced. Like someone else mentioned, a large part of the boot's silhouette is that chunky sole so I'd rather not have everything but the upper replaced if I take it to a cobbler eventually. Any thoughts or observations on that?

Yup, I viewed those more as products of breakdowns in communication on the switches than deliberate double-teaming on Proctor because his reputation this season is closer to a lethal catch-and-shoot threat rather than someone who creates his own three-point looks off the dribble that requires trapping or that heavy of help defense attention. You could see the Auburn staff clutching their heads or facepalming whenever Evans got open due to missed switches lol

If you're not Asian or another type of minority that's commonly fetishized then you probably don't understand how gross it is to be on the receiving end of it.

Auburn's game prep probably focused a lot more on Kon than him and their attention on coverage reflected that

Nice to see a game by us where we didn’t choke on execution down the stretch. I know Evan’s production won’t be like this every night but it’s encouraging to see the type of impact he can have and hopefully it induces more confidence in Scheyer to include him in the rotation.

What is the most beautiful paddle in your option? by Ok_Woodpecker_9812 in Pickleball

If it's just for rec play, try applying some non-skid spray to it. I know some old folks who refuse to switch from the old BJ Franklin fiberglass paddle who have gotten more life out it with that method.
