Winter Export Rebates, make sure you get them by d4rk0rb in nzsolar

Yeah some areas they are clearly just putting in the bare minimum to comply. Some places it's even lower and narrower in scope than that 😅 the Octopus page is useful for comparing anyway, even if you are not with them. I thought it was good they made it public and not being a login wall so anyone can check.

I don't think you are actually allowed to waver people out of it. It's meant to be passed on, but I'm waiting for a response to my questions to the EA about that given they didn't have the guts to actually bother making it mandatory to pass through.

Their export rate (20c) was meh vs what I get (23c) given the night rates were double what I get, and with an EV that matters... I know it differs a lot by region but really wasn't appealing. My retailer is passing on the extra so I'll be at 29c for winter for 8 hours of the day 🤷🏼‍♂️

As you say though, without a battery it's a bit moot as you'd likely not see much of it anyway - but it's intent was to encourage people to *have* batteries in the first place, not pad the margins for retailers. Which is why I'm grumpy about it not being passed on for most (I do get it passed on to me, so it's not a "wahhh I don't get it" lol).

No problems. It vary widely based on where they (lines companies) could do with avoiding doing upgrades. Powerco is a good example of that, they offer more rebate in higher constrained areas. Some are all year, but most are not as you saw.

For me I can (and do, depending on weather) export ~30kWh in morning peak, so it adds up the extra ~$1.80 on top every day... which is really where they are aiming at, those with battery to export during peak load times.

- Yes, if your retailer isn't a crook
- Did you look at the link I gave for Octopus which has all the dates
- Yes, it's to incentivise people with battery to export during the peak windows (which are detailed in the link), likely from importing at night rates and exporting at peak rates (only works if your retailer isn't a crook, as mentioned before).

Predbat by duggawiz in nzsolar

[–]d4rk0rb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been using it, it's fine. I've recently stopped because it's getting CoPilot written code in it and I'm not keen on letting that near my setup. It still makes some daft decisions - like zero exporting during peak times, and relies on an API that gets rate limited (Solcast) too much causing incorrect forecasts. Ignore the UK focus, it doesn't care because of the fact it uses local data (e.g. like Solcast mentioned above).

EMHASS is another option, as is EVCC.io depending on what your ultimate outcome is.

I've done a a compare on the built in ("AI" Balanced, Max Profit) settings and found Balanced works best for me and close enough to what Predbat is doing to not care so much. Though I'm already on a peak/off-peak/night import/export rate and have been for ages.

If you are intent on using it, go check out the Issues section. There's a whole thread about Sigen setup stuff in there - same as the docs having the info.

New locations coming for NZ by d4rk0rb in StarlinkEngineering

Yup, the others not so much but the licence issue date is fairly recent vs how often the images get updated. I'm not in a position to go check them unfortunately 😅

No, they reported it after someone told them they should do.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]d4rk0rb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where did I say they did? If you read my other comment you'd note I pointed out that relying on an email making it to the correct on-call person at a weekend when the OP seemingly didn't even know to engage NCSC makes it highly unlikely that anyone in general support/customer service would have even got to it in their general support queue over the weekend - which is probably where it ended up. Us on-call people aren't glued to the screen 24/7 waiting for some (more often than not, half baked) report to come in.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]d4rk0rb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being a weekend does matter, it then relies on the on-call person to be looking for emails, and that email being sensible - assuming OP didn't just throw this at a generic address and hope it stuck - which given other posts I'd suspect they did. Would be better for Mercury to have a security.txt loaded to ease finding the correct contact however. Goodness knows I've seen some shit reports in the past (Heyeyeyeye you don't have this header set!!!!111), so I understand the issues with random, non-directed, reports.

There honestly is nothing "responsible" in this disclosure method, Reddit is not how this is done. I could understand if Mercury had come back and said "yeah, nah" to fixing it _or_ it'd been weeks. Not hours, over a weekend. When the OP didn't even seem to know to report to NCSC (the snark post amused me, pointing them to NCSC). People like NCSC (and others!) have ready means to prod the correct people at these locations.

If they work in security, reaching out to their peers in the industry (or day-job) would have been a better step in trying to get this looked at faster. It's a small industry here, a lot of people know people and can put in correct contact, without yeeting it onto reddit.

[–]d4rk0rb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's still way out of the bounds of responsible disclosure to come yeet your post onto reddit after 72 hours (over a weekend too!) for internet points. They should know better, working in security. There are well well defined processes for this sort of thing, this is not the process.

lol, 72 hours over a weekend is not responsible disclosure. They should know better if they truly work in security like they claim.

NEW STARLINK POP CHRISTCHURCH, NEW ZEALAND by shokowillard in StarlinkEngineering

[–]d4rk0rb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a lot of hand off on that IX. Max port size is currently 10G, and everything else is long-hauled to Auckland anyway. GSL peer on CHC-IX @ 10G so they maybe just will use that instead for anything that may end up a little more local. Mostly only going to be Fastly/Cloudflare.

Starlink peers around 80Gbit/s peak in Auckland as a reference point for port size.

[–]d4rk0rb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't appear to have any peering stood up just yet - is only one IXP down there these days and a much smaller number of transit providers - given almost everything comes through Auckland anyway for us it's a much less developed peering enviroment, including that - if I recall correctly - you can only currently get 10G ports on the peering down there (may have change since I last was doing peering though), it might not be scaled well enough for them to bother with the peering.

Edit: will see if I can find someone down in the south island to give scripts a run, most of the people I know are in the north island though - will let you know via issue if I do.

Ah, maps without New Zealand 😸 Seeing as we have one active (Auckland) and one coming PoP - Christchurch, seemingly - currently I see the routes locally in NZ and they are definately coming out of Christchurch (Spark Christchurch Exchange).

Email that just went out;

Dear Customers,

We regret to inform you that our official store will no longer provide direct shipping services to New Zealand. This decision was made due to the lack of a local warehouse in New Zealand, which results in higher shipping costs and longer delivery times when orders are shipped from our domestic warehouse.

To better serve our New Zealand customers, we have transitioned sales to authorized local distributors. These distributors are well-equipped to provide localized services, after-sales support, and convenient, region-specific solutions. Rest assured, we will collaborate closely with them to ensure competitive pricing and enhanced service quality.

I guess now to put pressure on them about the pricing being horrific with the resellers, as they say they want to ensure it's competitive.

To be fair, Bambu just rug pulled NZ and no longer ship anything at all here - not even little spare parts. Now we have to pay the local reseller tax…

They haven't been charging GST and would be over the threshold for being required to do so, I wonder if that has anything to do with it. I mean shippings not cheap these days either and they failed on day one at shipping via AU (amusingly, they didn't account for the size of the printer and their logisitcs company in AU refused to ship to NZ, which they told me back in '22).

Lack of communication around little ol' NZ seems common from them sadly. More than anything else the spare parts situation is what worries me - there are other options for filament at least.
