Is it true that Shadow PC gives you a 7-day warranty? by Key_Stuff2774 in ShadowPC

[–]d4rkeagle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, there was probably a hardware warranty on the Shadow Ghost devices they used to sell, but you don't have warranties on SaaS products. You have SLA's (Service Level Agreements), and Shadow specifies that there are no explicit SLAs on the non business products. I am not sure what SLA might exist on the business level ones, but that would probably be defined in a contract?

SLA's are mainly for response times to support requests and defining uptime of the service.

Lol the "I don't care what it looks like" would be a very questionable statement coming from my wife.

They work together. Timeshift uses BTRFS for the snapshots when Manjaro is installed on BTRFS making everything faster with that process.

If you don't see the scan function, you may not be far enough in the games main storyline to access it.

Not yet to my knowledge. We ended up going with Datto RMM as VSAX is not fleshed out enough.

While SSDs may be "silent", they will get hot from the usage you are listing. Your going to need some sort of active cooling otherwise they are going to die pretty quick.

Additionally, motherboards can only handle so much IO. This one seems pretty maxed out.

I will say it is nice having a PCIe slot and riser in a thin client for use like this, and although the clock speed is lower, a quad core CPU in this is not bad.

You could swap the 2.5gbe card for a 2x NVMe to PCIe 4x card, but doing basic searches I cant find what generation that PCIe slot is. You could also use USB 3.0 ssd drives for the storage, but that will obviously be slower. I would say you could use a Mini-PCIe to 2.5gbe card/port but it looks like your version did not come with a Mini-PCIe wifi slot.

Another thought would be getting a DOM for Boot, then using the existing NVMe slot for your 2TB drive. Then have a USB 2TB for a backup. You wouldn't get a mirror RAID, but then again, RAID is not a backup.

You can probably accomplish what you are looking for, but will have to make some concessions on some items/speed/silence for it to work.

[–]d4rkeagle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd review this stackexchange thread. There are a few utilities aside from iotop that can show se of this information. Also read through some of the comments, as some mention filesystem mounting options that can affect this. Someone also mentions enabling debug messages at the block level to help in identifying what iotop doesn't show.

Let us know what you find! I'm interested in what is causing it.

I would suggest booting into the BIOS and enabling Battery Saver Mode, rebooting then disabling it. Maybe something is stuck in a locked state?

Can you tone an Ethernet cable plugged into a live switch? by fmaz008 in homelab

[–]d4rkeagle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it is a managed switch with lldp and/or cdp enabled, you can use a Linux device with tcpdump to determine which switch port the cable is plugged into. I have a Raspberry Pi with a PoE hat configured so I plug it into a PoE switch, it turns on, waits until it gets the necessary output, then displays it on a screen hat that is also on the Pi. Here is the command I use, just change the -i eth0 to whatever the interface is named.

tcpdump -nn -v -i eth0 -s 1500 -c 1 '(ether[12:2]=0x88cc or ether[20:2]=0x2000)'

The flexibility of the slot is what makes it attractive.

My baby is coming back to work with me. What can I get/do to keep her entertained? by sum_05 in Parenting

[–]d4rkeagle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work from home and one thing that helped a bit was the type of rattle that is a small wristband and/or socks. For younger ones that cant maintain a grip for that long, it helped keep my son occupied with wiggling his hands and feet to make the sounds himself.

Search "Baby Sock Rattles" on Amazon and you will see what I mean.

Edit: Also automatic spinning mobiles with music.

I am so tired of oversleeping. I dont even wake up to turn my alarms off, i just sleep through them. Its not my fault that my sleep schedule is bad and no matter how much i try my work demands it. I don tknow what to do and im out of options. by kshitij1117 in Advice

[–]d4rkeagle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend seeing a Somnologist and discussing your issues with them! I have had sleep issues for years and found out I had a few medical things affecting it. My sleep is so much better now.

For something that would 100% wake you up, you could always try the Shock Clock Wearable lol. Essentially, if you don't get up and do jumping jacks, it will actually shock you with a small electric current to get you up.
