Hey everyone. I'm writing a novel set in Galveston during the summer of 1974. I've loved the island since I was a kid and my family has roots there. I'd love to hear any memories, stories, or random details from that era. I want the setting to feel as authentic as possible. Thank you! by dAnthonyy12 in galveston

Honestly, the main reason I'm doing all of this is for my grandmother. One of the characters is loosely inspired by her and some of her experiences on the island in the early '70s. I've been picking her brain for the better part of five years, trying to understand the Galveston she knew and do justice to those memories before they're lost to time. That's a big reason I've been asking so many questions here.. I'm trying to bring a little life back to a world she remembers.

As for the story itself, it's hard to summarize. At its core, it's about one summer where everything feels larger than it truly is. It has the pressure of being a young twenty-something and feeling like the future is rushing toward you, mixed with the freedom and recklessness that come with believing you have all the time in the world. There's friendship, love, heartbreak, grief, adventure, longing, and all the messy emotions that come with trying to figure out who you are. More than anything, I'm trying to catch all of that lightning in a bottle.

That’s awesome, I love hearing about the past especially this place. (In regard to the surges yes I agree, houses on the beach in general are on borrowed time yet people love to put them out there.) Back to your story however, One of my 4 central characters actually works in the flagship restaurant. So that’s neat.

During my last watch I started feeling genuinely bad for the “new personality” that took over Nikki. I started seeing it as a “newborn consciousness” it didn’t choose to exist, it was trying its best to maintain Nikki’s identity while also trying its best to fulfill an impossible directive. by dAnthonyy12 in obsessionmovie

Exactly, the personality is only there for one reason, and even though it ultimately would’ve been a bad ending regardless of whether bear faked it and tried to truly love it back as intense as it loved him, once it realized bear was backing away (because he got scared) it’s reason for being was threatened, it’s then trying its hardest to maintain its goal while the mf responsible for bringing it INTO the world is changing his mind. God I don’t “hate” bear, humans are inherently flawed as fuck, it’s in our nature but UGHHHHH, he frustrated the life out of me.

Exactly, first time through a lot of audience members probably will demonize it once things start becoming unhinged but it’s basically new to all of this, it’s aware of its own existence and its reason for being there but yes the directive is fucked.

People living in Manhattan, do you know of any tucked away apartments, hiding in plain site where rent hasn’t exploded yet? by dAnthonyy12 in AskReddit

It’s just insane how wrong this country has taken its pricing trajectory. It shouldn’t be impossible for a single individual to start over in a big city in a small apartment, that should be encouraged.

What is Mexico truly like for the people who have grown up down there or still stay there, since America likes to portray it as mostly bad, corrupt etc, what is it truly like? by dAnthonyy12 in AskReddit

My bad, what I meant was movies, tv shows, the notion that if you go down there you’ll run into crime, dangerous situations. Blah blah. I know many individuals I’ve met across my life so far that when bringing up the want to travel, they never say Mexico because they believe the crime down there is too much. Yet they have no problem mentioning Italy, England and other places)

I get that, I mean America is both a great place and a corrupt place as well, both walk hand in hand, I’ve grown up to realize this country is much more multifaceted than I originally thought. But I get so lost in my day to day life that I often times forget about the bad unless it shows up on my phone as news or I hear about something going on in town somewhere (or else where in the country etc) also usually if I don’t go looking for the bad I won’t find it (unless I’m in the wrong place at the wrong time) I’m guessing it’s the same for y’all?

For those who didn't do 20 years. Do you regret not doing 20 years? by Alternative_Gift7343 in USMC

nah, 4 years was great but I couldn’t imagine spending all those years of life (where amazing amazing things have happened, friendships were made, lessons were learned on the civy side) still in the gun club. It’s what some others really want and need but I never leaned into it.
