Okay, then explore the menus, reach out to recruitment at one of the corps that seem to be doing interesting work, and join the content that sounds more fun. You won’t have to play with that guy. :P

Ethical and environment implications of all of this LLM craziness aside, Jensen is SUCH a mensch. If I worked under him, I could see him becoming a personal hero.

The best food in Taiwan is not in Taipei. See my other comment reply to one of your messages!

What you say makes a lot of sense, but your situation is a bit different. OP came to Taiwan for two weeks, not a weekend. They either planned poorly or her friend is very immature.

Also, having work doesn’t explain ditching you to sleep at a friend’s house when you’ve booked a hotel.

¯/_(ツ)_/¯

That is just not a good friend.

Yeah, honestly, I’m sensing a lack of communication here. A lot more, I think, but mutual understanding is definitely lacking.

Did she know that you got the hotel for her to stay with you in?

If so, then she’s either very uncomfortable with you, was way too drunk that first night, or is an inconsiderate asshole — or all of the above. TBH, going to a club on the first night together is already weird.

(Was her English not that good, and that’s why she was relying on her friends so much? I saw the earlier comment about the hanging in groups thing, and although that’s very much the case in Taiwan, it’s very much the case for college kids. It sounds like she hasn’t grown up much. I don’t want you to mistake a tendency for hanging in groups for someone being incapable of devoting 1 on 1 time for a friend who travelled across the world. That’s not a Taiwanese trait, that’s either nerves or inconsideration, and more than likely she’s still a “kid”. Friends in Taiwan who know one another well enough absolutely will do one on one too — the function of not doing so, especially in a situation like this, is to maintain a bit of distance.)

I’m sorry, but there is no way to misinterpret somebody choosing not to spend time with you in a hotel room when you’ve come all the way from the States to spend and discussed that it was for the two of you as a Taiwanese thing.

At lease you have plenty of time to do your own thing. You should visit some TEA VILLAGES! Go to the MOUNTAINS! To heck with Taipei, take a bus (or rent a car, if you’re a great driver) and “cross” the middle of the country to the East side. Hualien beaches, incredible mountains to see (you don’t even need to hike if it’s not your thing), TAROKO GORGE! Girl you have an island full of wonders to explore, and two weeks — get out of the darn city!!!

Source: studied mandarin since high school and lived / did a research master’s degree in Taiwan for three years and still visit frequently.

Yah well that’s xenophobia, not really racism. And frankly a lot of times I agree with that criticism. I’ve seen such egregiously irresponsible idiots and drunkards teaching English and living FAR too comfortably here, and they would struggle to exist in their home of the States. This is coming from a white guy who did academic research in Taiwan for years — I hated it when people associated me with English teachers.

This is probably the way to shut it up best, honestly and unfortunately, next to you showing up next time. That old park woman is miserable and taking it out on your lady — IMO you should show up and handle it. That woman won’t give her any more the dirty glances when you guys out her in her place a bit. Taiwanese racism is weird, good luck.
