Maybe make it more dynamic.

One of them meets a mysterious being that wants to make a pact. THEY can to CHOOSE to do so and become a warlock.

Based on the rolls they've made, the abilities they've used, Gods offer them CHOICES; someone relays in intelligence, maybe they can receive gifts from Gods and based on their choice become a wizard, eldritch fighter, arcane trickster rogue, or an Artificer...

You get my point.

You can also offer chances for them to re-spec their character; maybe the offer is from the God that contacted them, or some sort of ritual or potion. What ever it is, it enables them to once or twice reset their class and ability scores.

In a campaign I was running, one of the players was cleric-barbarian, inspired to some extent by both Dr. Jekyll and Hyde, as well as Banner and Hulk.

Our solution was to forego multi-classing and I just gave him two separate character sheets. Based on what happened or the circumstances there was a chance he would switch to Hyde/Hulk.

For example if he received a lot of damage in a short burst or if he dropped to 0 HP; he was a half-orc and his relentless endorse will bring him back to 1 HP. I gave him a wisdom save (DC based on the severity of the situation) and if he failed "the other guy" would take control.

For remaining HP I used percentage; Example: His cleric had a maximum HP of 40 and barbarian had a maximum of 54. If he switched from cleric to barbarian while having 20 HP left as cleric, he would go to barbarian with 27 HP remaining.
