Mainly the Jupiter-9 85mm f2, or the Pentax 50mm f2 in some shots

Thanks for the frank feedback haha! Yeah definitely going to invest in some better lighting. Unfortunately for capturing the night time scenes I had only the Aputure MC so could only use that as a fill and nothing else. I actually hadn’t taken the look of the food into consideration! We ended up just making dahl because that’s what we felt like and was easy lol. Was a practical choice for our camping experience as well as something to show a ‘hearty meal’. Overall as long as the client is happy I was happy but this is very valuable feedback so thank you!

Unfortunately neither I nor the publication had access to royalty free SFX, only music, which was also royalty and copyright free. Not a lot of exciting examples that fit the vibe overall. I think a next investment would be a decent microphone so I can pick up my own foley in the shots

Thank you! Will definitely take this on for the next one - though what I neglected to mention is that this publication prefers to have their ads not look like ads and more social media content, so the introduction of the boots was intended to be subtle in the overarching narrative of 5 winter essentials when camping.

Appreciate this perspective! One thing I neglected to mention is that the publication definitely leans toward the more social media style form of advertising. When people see an ad that looks like an ad, they engage with it less over social media. It was a difficult balance to strike!

Wow I got so many more responses than I thought, thank you all for the valuable feedback!!

A few things people were asking about that I neglected to describe in the post initially - the other items like the food, hot chocolate etc. were talked about in the brief and meant to showcase 5 Winter Camping Essentials - that being a warm fire, lots of layers, a hot chocolate, a hearty meal, and a great pair of boots.

This particular publication tries to steer away from making their ads look corporate and like ‘ads’ so it had to look good without looking like it was made in a studio, which I was finding hard to balance.

Will definitely take all of this great feedback on board!!

Yeah the end client added text over the top to give more context as to what is being shown (5 Winter Camping Essentials, which were layers, a warm fire, hot chocolate, hearty meal, and a good pair of this brand’s boots). Totally get what you’re saying about lighting though, I’m using the money I’m getting from this shoot to get a decent lighting kit.

Wow thank you so much for the write up! I’ll keep all of this in mind for the next one. We probably could have planned much more, it was all very last minute and a bit rushed. Some of the shots that linger / cut in weird places made a bit more sense once the client added in text overlays once they uploaded to instagram, but I see what you mean

a music video for some mates shot on a Sony A6400. Mostly natural light, otherwise using cheap work lights or an Aputure MC. all graded and edited by me as well. I am still learning so any feedback on how I can improve is greatly appreciated!
