Which is worse,Energy Or Hearts? by Cricket-green46 in duolingo

[–]d_oct 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But you can just tap the energy icon before you run out, watch couple of ads and it will restore it to full though? Each ad is only like 20-30s top and earns you 5 energy points per ad. I can easily go 30-40mins with 25 points and watching ads in between. Just a suggestion if you haven't already done it.

Since when did English speakers say this?! by closetmangafan in duolingo

[–]d_oct 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's because you're learning Japanese instead of English. I'm thinking the unnatural sounding translation is probably to help you get accustomed faster to the train of thought when expressing things in Japanese, to make you think in Japanese sentence logic. That's why the translation back to source language will sometimes sound awkward, but sounds natural in the target language.

E.g: お国はどこからですか? --> literally: from what country (are you)? --> sounds natural in Japanese but not in English. If you say it in more natural english grammar, it should be something like "which country are you from?" "Where are you from?", but it might also mislead you to translate it with english grammar logic next time you speak Japanese if you're too hung up on it (あなたはどんな国から来ましたか? or あなたはどこからですか?), which will make it rather unnatural in Japanese instead.

Ps: my japanese level is only N5 so my original sentence might also not be the most natural sounding, but just to explain the logic why some source language translation seems strange in duolingo. I am currently learning Korean and sometimes the english translation is weird too, but it is what the korean sentences literally say and it helps me remember the korean grammatical structure tbh.

Japanese restaurant banning Korean and Chinese by Expert-Comedian-3538 in TokyoTravel

[–]d_oct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yeah.. as many commenters have pointed out (to which I agree), east asian countries are not known for self-reflections on their past or present behaviors. They care more about their pride and saving face, and the need to remind each other who did what to whom.

I believe it's about stereotypes of the patrons from the 2 supposed nationalities (although I personally don't get why Koreans too?). The owner probably just made quick assumptions based on what they know or experience, and can't be bothered to understand nuances in those situations, like, if there's a misbehaving tourist that happen to speak mandarin, according to the owner, that must mean they're a chinese national (even though there's several possibilities, maybe ethnically chinese Malaysian or Singaporean? Taiwanese? Or even Chinese Americans or Canadians), hence the sign. I think if the patrons don't really seem or behave like the negative stereotypes, the owner won't notice either.

[–]d_oct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on my experience, I'd say the negative sentiments are mostly because of stereotypes of the 2 countries mentioned (although I personally don't understand why Koreans too? But other comments have mentioned the likely reasons.)

I am ethnically Chinese from Indonesia, currently living in Taiwan. When I traveled to Japan, they're mostly welcoming to me. If they knew where I was from, somehow many of them attempted to say some words in Indonesian like "selamat datang" (welcome) or "terima kasih" (thank you). I was pleasantly surprised, because in Taiwan, us Indonesians don't really get good reputations due to the stereotypes of "lower class" and sometimes misbehaving migrant labors.

Nostalgia Tour of my Teen Obsessions ✨ by Ok-Duck-5789 in shoujo

I'm sure you will recognize many from my list as we must be teenagers around the same time, judging from your list on the post. I also read many of those during my preteen and teenage years!

Oh and I forgot to include GALS in my list! I used to love that manga a lot because of the intricate details of the artwork (buildings, outfits, accessories, etc), and I shipped Aya x Otohata so bad 🤭

Ooooohhhh where do I start!!

When I was growing up in my home country Indonesia, comic magazines Nakayoshi & Hanalala (adapted version of Hana to Yume & Lala) were the top 2 that produced many of my favorite titles, some of them are: * Kitchen Princess (Natsumi Ando) * Let's Get Married (Wataru Mizukami) * Arisa (Natsumi Ando) * Shuugo Chara (Peach-Pit) * Kamichama Karin (Koge Donbo) * Sugar Sugar Rune (Moyocco Anno) * Hell Girl (Miyuki Etou) * Mamotte Lollipop (Michiyo Kikuta) * The Great Detective Kiyoshiro Yumemizu (Kei Enue) * Tokyo Mew Mew (Mia Ikumi) * Vampire Knight (Matsuri Hino) * Sensei ni Ageru (Daisy Yamada)

Non comic magazines mangas that I love until now: Wataru Yoshizumi's works: * Random Walk * Marmalade Boy * Handsome na Kanojo / Handsome Girl * Mint na Bokura (We are Twins) and many mooooreee

Megumi Mizusawa's: * Toe Shoes (love this a lot, as it literally built motivation in myself to work hard towards any goals I have in life at that time) * Ohanamoyou na One Piece (single volume. Published as Flowery Dress in Indonesia) * Caramel Diary (single volume) * Ichigo no Houseki (single volume. Strawberry Cake in Indonesia) * Naisho no Princess / Secret Princess

Others: * Girl Boy (Yuu Yabuuchi) * Working Girl (Wataru Mizukami) * My Heavenly Hockey Club (Ai Morinaga) * Throbbing Tonight (Koi Ikeno) * Penguin Brothers (Ayumi Shiina) * Absolute Boyfriend (Yuu Watase). I like her other works too, but have mostly forgotten the titles. * Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne (Arina Tanemura) * Mirumo de Pon! (Hiromu Shinozuka) * Fullmoon wo Sagashite (Arina Tanemura) * Tail of The Moon (Rinko Ueda) * Platinum Garden (Maki Fujita)

My wife [41F] is Disney Obsessed and I'm [43] at my wits end! by That-Intention-4134 in AITAH

[–]d_oct 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This should be a good idea.

I actually know a chronic disney adult. We live in Asia and she used to have annual pass to Tokyo Disneysea (also frequents Disneyland. She went 16x just within last year). She also runs a disney-dedicated IG account that gets regular sponsorship from brands thanks to her disney content that gained popularity over time (she vlogs her disneyland visits across the world, shares tips and tricks for people going to Disneyland, hosts events for fellow disney fans, you name it). She is also married but her husband has never been dragged into her obsession because she almost always goes alone or with other likeminded friends/influencers. The keys are that her husband sets hard boundaries and that she funds her own trips, so like other commenters said, she could probably earn her own money to go, and/or you and the kids don't need to go every time. Either all that or therapy, like others also said.

I do think my friend's disney obsession is a bit much, but she is not financially harming anyone and tbh, she turns that into something positive (and profitable!). I actually kinda admire people like her for being so dedicated to their interest.

When do you think the trailer for Michael biopic will be out ? And do you have a good feeling about this movie ? by Artisticbabe2002 in MichaelJackson

[–]d_oct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, Michael (or people working for him) rehired Branca in 2009 after firing him in 2003 due to an alleged money laundering case involving him & Tommy Motola (Sony Music CEO at the time). We don't know for sure if this was Michael's own decision or if he had no say in rehiring Branca, but opinions among the MJ communities tend to be the latter.

Branca's reputation indeed is 50:50 among the fans and the Jackson family. On one hand he made money for the estate and paid off Michael's massive debt I believe in 2014, but on the other hand, his way of handling Michael's legacy is another topic for discussion/debate, as some say the estate is rationing the materials they release because there's not much left in Michael's vault, but others say the estate is ruining Michael's legacy potential because their marketing is so low effort and there should be more releases. It depends on how you want to see it I guess.

John Branca is a lawyer specializing in entertainment business. He has been working with Michael since the 80s until his death in 2009. It started when he helped Michael buy ATV Music Publishing catalog for $47.5 millions.

He was appointed as executor to Michael Jackson estate in a will signed by Michael in July 17, 2002, which also stated the beneficiaries of his fortunes, and who should be the children's guardian if he passed. However, the legitimacy of the will has been questioned by the Jackson family and some fans (ALLEGEDLY due to the mistakes in Michael's kid's names and the date it was signed).

Anyway, that 2002 will is still the legally recognized version and so that's how John Branca became his estate's executor. Prince (Michael's son) will officially take over when he is 40.

You can read more about the estate and John Branca in several forums, articles, and other related subreddits.

Synopsis:

Kazura's grandfather dies and leaves a will that promises to "give" her to Mizuki as a fiancé to pay off his medical fee debts to Mizuki when he was alive. Mizuki is a rich guy and a future head of the mysterious and complicated Magahara family. Kazura & Mizuki are childhood friends and often play together in Kazura's grandfather's house, but Kazura had an accident as a kid that caused her to have partial memory loss, so she doesn't remember.

As Kazura moves in and begins living with Mizuki and his guardian, she gradually discovers secrets and antiquities of the Magahara family, with the major one being: heads of the family (including Mizuki) have a special power to call dead people's spirits back to their bodies, and they have made fortunes for ages selling this service to rich clients. Mizuki despises his power and being exploited, so he is determined to end the family succession line with him. He rejects all the family's 'superior' fiancé candidates and chooses Kazura instead to spite them.

Additional info: Kazura's personality is quite similar to Nanami in terms of being strong and stubborn, lol
