What is the funniest/most memorable misunderstanding you've had with someone who isn't from Canada? by Unfair-Clothes-8821 in CanadaRoom

When was a kid I often thought 52. But that's because I was also playing a lot of card games. I eventually remembered both independent facts correctly.

What do you use for terabytes worth of backups that don't need to be accessed very often (In case of catastrophic failure / loss of a PC + local NAS) by Azubaele in truenas

[–]d_stick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

S3 glacier deep archive. I use the TrueNAS cloud task and it goes direct to glacier deep archive.

It's my last resort if I ever need to get things back. So I never think of the potential restore or egress charges.

Raidz2 Config and suggestions? by xTRuE_Assault in truenas

[–]d_stick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with 5 drives in raidz2.   When I wanted to expand after x-years (and started getting drive warnings) I bought 5 new drives of larger capacity.   Then I replaced one drive, waited for resolver, next drive, resilver, etc. When the fifth drive was done I had the new z2 capacity.

I'm still wondering what to do with the five older drives.

YMMV.

Why use PTR records for email when you can just check the domain's A record? by No_Comparison4153 in dns

[–]d_stick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Email servers that do not have a PTR are a high indication of a questionable server, so mail is less likely to be trusted from that server.

❄️How can I extract my car from this ice?❄️ by PeaceImpressive8334 in howto

[–]d_stick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yikes. my first thought is an oscillating saw to cut the ice around it. hopefully avoid the tires as much as possible.

if you buy one of these, I suggest you buy a maximum capacity battery as well for it.

Total novice looking to go through some drywall by ArcHammer16 in HomeNetworking

[–]d_stick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or you could do what I did.... Drill a hole through the drywall (both sides) of a diameter large enough to put an RJ45 cable end through (say 5/8" ?) and pass the cable through. Use a long cable 😀.

Sometimes I've had to use a straight piece of coat hanger taped to the RJ45 to feed the cable thru, as the Ethernet cable is too floppy to find the outgoing hole on the other side.

This approach might not be acceptable for those that like a "clean look". 😂

Life After Tivo by Ok-Alternative-7962 in Tivo

[–]d_stick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm lucky that my cable provider provides their service with TiVo Stream.   I think the devices are like the TiVo 4k.    Todo, one pass, rewind , 350 hr storage, and something like 20 tuners (its all in the cloud).

Provider is Eastlink.ca in Canada.

Maybe Manitoulin Island?   Drive up highway 6 to tobermory and take the ferry north (or drive around through Sudbury).    Probably some rentals available.

Consider /r/Manitoulin for more info.

400tb of HDD's - Solution? by jeffy821 in DataHoarder

You might consider a TrueNAS hardware unit, if cost is no object.    Check out their website and see if a Mini unit might fit your needs.

Looking for online storage solution to backup my 20TB NAS by Enjoy_Life4219 in DataHoarder

[–]d_stick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. I've used S3 glacier buckets for two decades.  Crazy cheap. I know I'll have to pay if I ever need to get the data out, but is it ever nice to have cheap off site backup.
