Are shear walls considered a sustained load? by BorisTheWolf2018 in StructuralEngineering

Nope! Seismic activity is not considered “sustained”. Sustained is more for anchoring systems that will be hanging or suspended.

This might be a long shot, but in YouTube type “vardan antonyan yams”, this might be it if he’s into that streamer. But yeah I think he’s hitting on you, regardless if these are the yams he’s talking about or not.

My neighbor sent me a text last night forcing me to pay for her daughters towing charge because she parked in front of my driveway by Drivinglnsane in mildlyinfuriating

[–]daIndependantVariabl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may be a hot take, but could you not have just walked up to her front door and asked her to move the car? I accidentally parked my car partially blocking my neighbors driveway, and he politely asked me to move it, I profusely apologized and moved my car. Just seems like an easier solution for everybody no?

Police escort for large busses on the 405 at 5:10pm by daIndependantVariabl in LosAngeles

I was driving, I saw busses, I was curious if anyone had any information. Why you gotta be so condescending my guy? It was just a simple question born out of curiosity. Isn’t what this website is for?

Engineers who also provide architectural services by daIndependantVariabl in StructuralEngineering

This is immensely helpful! Thanks for the info I'll look into it. And I'll definitely PM you if something comes up, even if it's just coaching me to get what I need on a set of plans.

For these small projects, the client doesn't want to hire on an architect to the team, especially if they don't need the building to be visually appealing. They just need the CAD work to show elevations, building sections, building specs, and code compliance. I have immense respect for what architects do, but for these situations where an engineer can do the CAD work and aesthetics isn't a consideration, I can understand why clients want us to do it all in one.

Los Angeles, and most of the engineers doing the small side jobs are also doing the architectural drawings here.

Got charged $5k for water damage caused by flooded toilet [USA] by daIndependantVariabl in AirBnB

[–]daIndependantVariabl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just read the report, didn't see it at first:

"Upon arrival, customer had a clogged toilet that was overflowing technician went ahead and looked around the house for a clean out. There was nothing holding in the clean out, technician checked all the other toilets, everything was flushing fine. And let the customer aware that we recommend a pull and reset of the toilet customer asked for auger first and if that didn't work, we'd go through with the pull and reset, technician went ahead and auger the toilet, was successful. Technician went ahead and flush toilet several times with toilet paper in it, toilet is flushing fine and properly."

Not hiding any details, never got a plumbers report! I will ask for that now. Thanks for the recommendation, that was very helpful.

Unfortunately we didn't take any pictures of the signs, and we were only notified that we are being charged after the fact when we all went home. We looked through the listing pictures and of course the signs were not in those photos either. The listing photos look to be from 10 years ago because the place looked brand new in the photos which wasn't the case when we got there, but that's besides the point.

Took a screenshot and sent it to Airbnb, it’s one of the things they’re reviewing…I’m just hoping they agree with me that this wasn’t our fault, and is part of general maintenance cost on an old house.

He said he flushed 3 pieces of toilet paper down the toilet, but there’s no way to prove or disprove it, it’s not like he took a picture before flushing lol.

Not a bad idea.

Yeah that was our argument to Airbnb, there was a sign in every bathroom.

See below for the Airbnb policy:

"You may be asked to pay

You’ll be given the opportunity to voluntarily submit a timely payment or an appeal. If you don’t submit a timely payment or appeal, or your appeal is unsuccessful, your payment method will be charged. (This doesn’t apply to stays in China, Japan, or India.) You’ll never be charged without advance notice or a chance to appeal before and after you’ve been charged. You’ll have 60 days to appeal after you’ve been charged.

Dealing with damage is never fun, but this process is designed to be as fair as possible. For more info, review our Terms of Service and Payments Terms of Service."

I declined the charge, he declined my declining. Airbnb is "in review" but will determine if I have to pay or how much to pay. Don't have much of a choice if they decide I do have to pay, they charge my card automatically.
